  • Myxobacteria produce diverse secondary metabolites for predation, self-defense, intercellular signaling, and other unknown functions. Many secondary metabolites isolated from myxobacteria show pharmaceutically useful bioactivity such as anticancer, antibacterial, and antifungal activities with a unique mechanism of action. Therefore, a large number of myxobacterial strains have been isolated globally and many bioactive compounds have been purified from them. However, 16S rRNA database analysis indicates that there are far more types of myxobacterial species in the wild than have ever been isolated, and genome sequence analysis suggests that each myxobacterium is capable of producing much more metabolites than already known. In this article, the current status of studies on the secondary metabolites from myxobacteria, their biosynthetic genes, biological functions, and transcriptional regulatory factors governing gene expression were reviewed.

  • The ultrastructure of submandibular gland was examined in the lesser white-toothed shrew, Crocidura suaveolens. The submandibular gland of C. suaveolens was a mixed gland composed of serous and mucous acinar cells. Secretory granules from the acini were discharged through the salivary ducts into the oral cavity. Serous and mucous acinar cells had well developed rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria and large amount of granules. In case of serous acinar granules, an immature granule was formless and had only dense specks, and a matured granule was a complete round type delimiting by a single membrane and had a homogeneous dense center with dense specks on the border. In case of mucous acinar granules, while an immature granule was a round type and had an only homogeneous matrix and an indistinct limiting membrane, a mature granule was an even round type having a variety of pattern with several dense bands into the homogeneous matrix and had a distinct membrane. Therefore, a mature mucous acinar granule of C. suaveolens was not only distinct from those of the other mammalian species to have a variety of pattern but also from those of C. lasiura to have an even round type. A great serous-like secretory granules and Myelin-like body were observed in the cytoplasm and lumen of granular duct cells. Myelin-like body, a characteristic structure only reported in salivary gland of three shrews, was discharged from secretory cell into lumen by the manner of exocytosis which has little differences from discharging manner of secretory granules.

  • This study was described the microscopic anatomy of male reproductive organs and spermatophore necessary for understanding the reproductive ecology of the long arm octopus Octopus minor. The long arm octopus was a species that has sexual dimorphism that can distinguish between sex based on the presence of hectocotylus. Male reproductive organs consisted of testis, primary spermatic duct, spermatic gland, secondary spermatic duct, spermatophoric gland and spermatophoric sac. Histologically, the testis was testicular tubule type and male germ cells showed a layered arrangement. The primary spermatic duct was a tube connecting the testis and spermatic gland, and consisted with epithelial layer and connective tissue. The spermatic gland was located between the primary and secondary spermatic duct, and the epithelial layer was composed of epithelial cells and mucous cells. Mucous cells reacted blue in the AB-PAS (pH 2.5) reaction and purple in the AF-AB (pH 2.5) reaction. The secondary spermatic duct was a short tube connecting spermatic gland and spermatophoric gland, and folds were developed in lumen. The spermatophoric gland consisted of numerous tubular glands and secretory cells had eosinophilic granules. The spermatophoric sac was shape of pouch, folds were developed in lumen, and vacuolar secretory cells were present in the epithelial layer. The spermatophore was 83.5 mm long and consisted of cap thread in anterior portion, ejaculatory apparatus and cement body in medial portion, sperm mass in posterior portion.

  • Myxofibrosarcoma is one of the most common soft tissue tumors in elderly patients, mostly arising in the extremities, and rarely arising in the chest wall. A 53-year-old women presented with a painful chest wall mass in the manubrium. We excised the mass. The mass was located subdermally, but had infiltrated the underlying muscle layer, and was histologically diagnosed as an intermediate grade myxofibrosarcoma showing myxoid changes and hypercellularity. Here we report a rare case of chest wall myxofibrosarcoma and present a review of the literature.

  • Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is very rarely seen, and it commonly arises from the deep soft tissues of the lower extremities. Histologically, it is characterized by the presence of bland spindle cells with mainly storiform pattern of growth, set in alternating areas with a myxoid or fibrous stroma. The immunohistochemical reaction of this tumor permits a positive diagnosis of low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma and allows its distinction from a number of other benign and malignant soft tissue tumor. We report this rare case together with the review of the literature.

  • This experiment was performed to evaluate the morphological responses of the gastric epithelial cells of the mouse, inoculated with Ehrlich carcinoma cells in the inguinal area, following administration of 5-fluorouracil, mitomycin C or Acriflavine-Guanosine compound (AG60). In this study, each mouse was inoculated with $1{\times}10^7$ Ehrlich carcinoma cells subcutaneously in the inguinal area. From next day after inoculations, 0.2 mL of saline, 5-fluorouracil (30 mg/kg), mitomycin C ($400{\mu}g/kg$) or AG60 (30 mg/kg) were injected to the animals every other day, respectively. Each animals were sacrificed after 7th injection and tissue were taken from the gastric mucosa. Thereafter, the ultrathin sections were stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate. In the 5-fluorouracil-, mitomycin C- or AG60-treated mice, myelin figures and multivesicular bodies within the gastric mucous epithelial cells were observed more frequently than those of the normal control. In the 5-fluorouracil-treated mice, membrane structures containing a few mucous granules in the luminal space were observed. Indeed, bulging cytoplasmic process containing mucous granules protruding into the gastric lumen were observed in the mitomycin Ctreated mice. Therefore, this study suggested that AG60 as compared with 5-fluorourail and mitomycin C may effective medicine without damage to the secretion ability of gastric mucous epithelial cells.

  • A study was undertaken on rats in order to clarify the gastric mucosal, morphologic response to oral and subcutaneous administration of acetylsalicylic acid(aspirin). Aspirin was administered orally (oral group) and subcutaneously (subcutaneous group) at does rate of 60 mg per kg of body weight per day to 40 normal rats. On the 1st, 3rd, 7th, and 15th day of administration, in addition to clinical observation, 5 rats each from the both groups were sacrificed and examined macroscopically, histologically and electron-microscopically for the morphological changes of gastric mucosal cells with the following results. Although the clinical, macroscopic and histological changes were not significant, marked ultrastructural changes were observed. Parietal and chief cells were affected most severely by the administration of aspirin ; parietal cells showed increase in the number of SER and intracellular canaliculi, where-as in chief cells fragmentation, luminal dilatation, decrease in the number and structural abnormalities of RER were seen. Relatively mild changes were observed in mucous, mucous neck and basal-granulated cells. Although the degree of changes was milder than those of oral group, the similar changes were also observed in the subcutaneous group. From these results, it would be concluded that aspirin injury of gastric mucosa is effected not only by the direct injury to the mucosa but also indirectly by the blood concentration of aspirin.

  • An olfactory organ in Scartelaos gigas, so-called mudskipper known as adaptation to an amphibious lifestyle, was investigated anatomically and histologically. S. gigas possessed the paired olfactory organ comprising respectively the one elongated canal and two nasal sacs, lacrimal and ethmoidal nasal sac. The sensory epithelium developed partly in the canal contained four distinct types of cells: (1) receptor cell with 3 to 4 cilia in number, (2) supporting, (3) basal, (4) mucus cell. The sensory epithelium was also of transitional layer as multi cellularity structure. The non-sensory epithelium had no sensory elements. The two nasal sacs possessed typically a lot of mucin droplets. These results might be considered that anatomical structure and histological characters of the olfactory organ showing in S. gigas is adapted to semi-aquatic life associated with its ecological habit and habitat.

  • The anatomy and histology of the olfactory organ of Monopterus albus was investigated using stereo microscopy, light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The external structure of the olfactory organ exhibited closed anterior and posterior nostrils parallel to the skin surface. The interior structure consisted of a pipe-like chamber, and lower and upper accessory nasal sacs. The olfactory chamber was composed of the sensory and non-sensory epithelium, and an unidentified organ. The sensory epithelium of the pseudostratified epithelial layer was composed of olfactory receptor neurons, supporting cells, basal cells, and lymphatic cells; and the non-sensory epithelium of the stratified squamous layer contained stratified epithelial cells and mucous cells with acidic mucopolysaccharides. The presence of intraepithelial blood capillaries and abundant dermal vascularization in the sensory epithelium of the olfactory chamber may provide strong histological evidence that respiration occurs through the olfactory epithelium.
