In order to clarify the effect of cryptosporidiosis on immune response, histopathological changes associated with experimentally occurring bursal cryptosporidiosis in chickens were chronologically observed as the first step. A total of 150 2-day-old chickens was each inoculated orally with a single dose of 5 × 105 Cryptospori, mum bailevi oocysts. The chickens showed a normal profile of oocyst shedding in droppings. The bursa indices throughout the experimental period indicated negligible reactions. Numerous cryptosporidia occurred in the microvillous border of bursal epithelium between days 4 and 16 postinoculation (PI). Appearance of the most mast cells was followed by a dramatic loss of the protozoa in the bursa of Fabricius (BF). The distribution of the coccidium coincided with heterophil infiltration in the epithelium and adjacent lamina propria. The histopathological lesion was marked diffuse chronic superficial purulent bursitis with heterophil infiltration in the epithelium and adjacent lamina proprla and mucosal epithelial hyperplasia. These results suggest that the bursitis may induce immunosuppressive effect.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is bacterial infection, with more than half of the world population infected and relates to many oral disease such oral lichen planus, recurrent aphthous ulceration, periodontal disease and halitosis and so on. Burning mouth syndrome(BMS) is defined as a burning sensation of the oral mucosa, lips, and/or tongue, in the absence of specific oral lesions. The etiology of BMS is suggested local, systemic and psychological factors and researchs related BMS and to infection of H. pyloir in the oral cavity are few. The purpose of this study was to evaluate relationship between burning mouth syndrome and H. pylori in the oral cavity. We recruited 21 subjects with burning mouth syndrome and 21 subjects as control group. Samples in the oral cavity were taken area of buccal mucosa, dorsum of the tongue and saliva. We analysed samples by nested polymerase chain reaction(PCR). The results were as follows: 1. Among 21 patients with burning mouth sydrome and 21 subjects of control group, 6(29%) and 3(14%) were positive respectively(P>0.05). 2. In detection rate of H. pylori in area taken sample, 3(14%), 2(10%) and 4(19%) were positive in buccal mucosa, dorsum of the tongue and saliva of patient and 2(10%) and 1(5%) were positive in dorsum of the tongue and saliva of control group(P>0.05). Conclusively, we can guess that H. pylori in the oral cavity is not related with burning mouth syndrome.
Churg-Strauss syndrome is a rare form of systemic necrotizing vasculitis that occurs exclusively in patients with asthma, and is associated with blood and tissue eosinophilia. The classic pathology findings in the lung include a combination of eosinophilic pneumonia, granulomatous inflammation and necrotizing vasculitis. However, there are few reports of tracheobronchial mucosal lesions in Churg-Strauss syndrome. We report a case of Churg-Strauss syndrome with multiple tracheobronchial mucosal lesions in a 33-year-old man with a history of bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis. He had been diagnosed with community acquired pneumonia at another hospital and was treated with antibiotics. However, the chest radiographic findings were aggravated and showed multifocal consolidations in the whole lung fields. He was transferred to the Asan Medical Center. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed multiple nodular mucosal lesions of the trachea and bronchi. The histopathology of the mucosal lesions revealed necrotizing bronchial inflammation with eosinophilic infiltration. Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery was performed. The wedge resected lung tissue revealed chronic eosinophilic pneumonia that was consistent with Churg-Strauss syndrome. Methylprednisolone (1 mg/kg q 8 hr) was prescribed and his symptoms resolved gradually. The chest radiographic findings improved significantly, and a follow-up fiberoptic bronchoscopy performed eight days later showed that the tracheobronchial mucosal lesions had resolved. The patient was prescribed oral prednisolone for 20 months after discharge. Currently, the patient is not taking steroids and is being followed up.

Garre's osteomyelitis is associated with bacterial infection and bone necrosis resulting from obstruction of blood supply. The most common cause for Garre's osteomyelitis is odontogenic infection that originates from periodontal tissue or dental pulp. Subperiosteal abscess may also cause Garre's osteomyelitis in the progress of the infection. Mandible is more often affected than maxilla, most commonly in the permanent first molar region of mandible. Clinically, it results in a hard swelling over the jaw, producing facial asymmetry. Meanwhile, radiograph shows a characteristic feature of irregular pulpal cavity, showing new periosteal proliferation located in successive layers to the condensed cortical bone on stimulated site. The treatment method for Garre's osteomyelitis are removal of the infection source, root canal treatment, antibiotic medication, and incision and drainage. This report presents a case of Garre's osteomyelitis under 15 years old. The patient was successfully treated by antibiotic medication accompanied with root canal treatment. Since the symptom of pediatric patients is less severe than adult, careful diagnosis with history taking and clinical examination is necessary. Furthermore long-term follow-up examination is needed to prevent recurrence even after the symptom disapears.
Purpose: Ulcerative colitis is a common inflammatory bowel disease. Prolonged colitis can be a risk factor for the development of colorectal cancer. Mulberry twig (MT, Sangzhi), a dry branch of Morus alba L., which is widely distributed throughout East Asia, has been shown to have anti-inflammatory activities in the cells. However, the effects of MT extracts on colitis in in vivo are limited. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of MT extracts in the dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mouse colitis model. Methods: Six week-old, male ICR mice were divided into 3 groups: Control (n = 5), DSS (n = 7), and DSS+MT (n = 7) groups. Mice in the DSS and DSS+MT groups were administrated 3% DSS in drinking water for 5 days to induce colitis. At the same time, water extracts of MT (5 g/kg body weight/day) were orally administered to mice in the DSS+MT groups for 5 days. Results: The MT extracts significantly reduced the clinical and pathological characteristics of colitis. Disease activity index, mucosal thickness, and colonocyte proliferation were significantly reduced in the DSS+MT group compared with the DSS group. Furthermore, MT administration reduced the levels of plasma $TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-6, and the colonic myeloperoxidase activity as well as mRNA expression of $TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-6, Cox-2, and iNOS. Conclusion: Taken together, these results suggest that MT water extracts have potent anti-colitis activities in the mouse colitis model.
Purpose: To study the effect of recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) on oral mucositis induced by cisplatin and radiotherapy in a mouse model. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four ICR mice were divided into three groups-the normal control group, the no rhEGF group (treatment with cisplatin and radiation) and the rhEGF group (treatment with cisplatin, radiation and rhEGF). A model of mucositis induced by cisplatin and radiotherapy was established by injecting mice with cisplatin (10 mg/kg) on day 1 and with radiation exposure (5 Gy/day) to the head and neck on days $1{\sim}5$. rhEGF was administered subcutaneously on days -1 to 0 (1 mg/kg/day) and on days 3 to 5 (1 mg/kg/day). Evaluation included body weight, oral intake, and histology. Results: For the comparison of the change of body weight between the rhEGF group and the no rhEGF group, a statistically significant difference was observed in the rhEGF group for the 5 days after day 3 of. the experiment. The rhEGF group and no rhEGF group had reduced food intake until day 5 of the experiment, and then the mice demonstrated increased food intake after day 13 of the of experiment. When the histological examination was conducted on day 7 after treatment with cisplatin and radiation, the rhEGF group showed a focal cellular reaction in the epidermal layer of the mucosa, while the no rhEGF group did not show inflammation of the oral mucosa. Conclusion: These findings suggest that rhEGF has a potential to reduce the oral mucositis burden in mice after treatment with cisplatin and radiation. The optimal dose, number and timing of the administration of rhEGF require further investigation.
Candidiasis, an opportunistic infectious condition caused by the genus Candida, is the most common oral fungal infection in humans. The diagnosis of oral candidiasis can often be made based on recognition of its clinical pattern, but at times there is difficulty in making a clinical diagnosis because of its various manifestations. Several antifungal medications have been developed for managing fungal infections. Despite the availability of several effective antimycotics for the treatment of oral candidiasis, failure of therapy is not uncommon due to the unique environment of the oral cavity, where the flushing effect of saliva and the cleaning action of the oral musculature tend to reduce the drug concentration to sub-therapeutic levels. In this case report, we present two patients diagnosed with chronic hyperplastic candidiasis and median rhomboid glossitis, which are known as rare forms of candidiasis. In both cases, there was a significant reduction of clinical signs and symptoms when fluconazole was prescribed after the failure of initial nystatin therapy.
Case of ischemic colitis after enema for bowel cleansing have been rarely reported, but there has been no case report of a patient on modiefied fasting therapy. A 26-year old male patient with obesity admitted Korean medical hospital of Kyung Hee university for losing weight. He is on a special diet called modiefied fasting therapy, only took the fermented herbal drink. At 2nd day, he received an enema for bowel cleansing. A few hours after enema, he had a bloody diarrhea with lower abdominal pain. His colonoscopic and histologic findings presented ischemic colitis. He was advised to fast for two days and couldn't complete his diet program. We suggest 4 possible reasons : Increased intraluminal pressure by enema, vascular spasm caused by room-temperature glycerin solution colder than intraluminal temperature, predisposition to bleeding disturbances by taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor(SSRI) for depression history and mucosal injury by osmotic effect of glycerin solution itself. For reducing the risk of bowel cleansing, glycerin enema should be carefully prescribed and practiced concerning the condition of each patient.
