This purpose of this study was to examine the effect of planting density, growing medium and strength of a nutrient solution (National Horticultural Research Institute's nutrient solution: HRI's) on the growth and development of Oriental hybrid lily 'Le Reve' in a box cultivation. The planting density with 14, 18 and 22 bulbs had sprouting one day earlier than other treatments. Planting density of 22 bulbs flowered first, while six bulbs flowered the last, indicating that higher planting densities led earlier flowering. The increasing planting density increased stem length of cut flowers. On the other hand, cut flower quality was improved when the planting density was lower. The incidence of physiological disorders such as blasting was more frequent in planting density of 22, 18, and 14, indicating that higher planting densities caused higher incidences of physiological disorders. All planting densities except 22 bulbs displayed superior results in width, weight, number, and scale weight of the bulbs. Greater planting densities led to inferior bulb enlargement and an increased decomposition rate. pH decreased in all treatments after the bulb enlargement and decreased more as the planting density increased. Contents of P, K, Ca, and Mg increased, while contents of K and Ca decreased, as the planting density increased. The rice hull+coir (1:1, v/v) treatment was better than others, but did not show that much of a difference. Moreover, in bulbs enlargement after cut flower harvest, lily medium and perlite+peat moss treatments showed superior results, and decomposition rate was the greatest in the rice hull+coir (1:1, v/v) treatment. In the HRI's solution strength treatment from the period of flower bud emergence to flower harvest, higher solution strengths gave better cut flower quality in terns of length, weight, and number of flowers. The non-treated control and one third strength of a HRI's solution hastened flowering, indicating that lower strengths led to earlier flowering. According to the results of leaf analysis as affected by solution strength during the flower harvest, absorption rates of N and K were greater when the strength was higher, and Ca and Mg showed the same tendency. On the other hand, the absorption rate of P was the lowest in all treatments.
This study was conducted to improve commercial quality of cut spray chrysanthemums 'Charming Eye' and 'Pink Pride' bred in Korea by foliar application of daminozide, suppressing excessive elongation of peduncle caused by high temperature in greenhouse. Applications were made at two floral-bud-developmental stages and concentrations used were 0, 500, 1000, and $2000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. As for 'Charming Eye', cut flower length, peduncle diameter, stem diameter, flower bud diameter, and the number of flower buds did not show any significant difference among all treatments including control. However, the suppressing effect of peduncle elongation, widening angle of flower cluster arrangement on apical part, and increasing parallel flower buds in stage I showed better than those in stage II regardless of daminozide concentration. As for 'Pink Pride', cut flower length, peduncle diameter, and stem diameter did not show any significant difference among all treatments including control but angle of flower cluster on apical part increased compared to control as daminozide was sprayed at stage I and II except $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ daminozide-sprayed at stage II. The number of flower buds and flower bud diameter showed the greatest increment through $1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ daminozide-sprayed at stage I and did the least values as sprayed with $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ daminozide at stage II. Daminozide also gradually reduced peduncle length in a concentration-dependant manner but elongation of peduncle foliar-sprayed at stage I showed the more suppressing effect than that at stage II. Increasing the number of parallel flower buds showed the best results when sprayed with $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ at stage I. In conclusion, we recommended that foliar spraying with $500-1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ daminozide at stage I and foliar spraying with $1,000-2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ daminozide at stage I improved cut flower quality of 'Channing Eye' and 'Pink Pride', respectively.
A new cultivar $Dendranthema$$grandiflourm$ 'Dream Water' was developed at Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services, Korea in 2009. The cultivar 'Dream Water' was initially derived from the cross in 2005 between 'Patra', a spray chrysanthemum cultivar with yellow single type, and 'Ruces', a spray chrysanthemum cultivar with white single type. The cultivar has single type with ivory petals. Trial evaluation was conducted from 2006 to 2009 for selection of this variety, including a shading culture in spring and a retarding culture in summer. The flowering time of 'Dream Water' was October 24th, and year-round flowering is possible by shading or lighting treatment. The diameter of the flower is 56.0 mm. Number of flowers per stem and petals per flower are 11.1 and 26.8, respectively. Its leaf color was green (Green Group 147A) and plant height was 89.7 cm. Days to flowering under the short day treatment is about 54 in spring, and diameter of flower center was 1.4 cm in the summer. The vase life was 16.7 days in autumn and consumer's preference of new spray chrysanthemum is high level than control.

A new gerbera cultivar 'Paspin' was released by the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 2009. A cross was made between 'Lilabella' and 'Mephisto' with purple and semi-double in 2005. After investigation of the characteristics for five years (from 2005 to 2009), it was selected specially as a cut flower. The 'Paspin' cultivar has a pastel pink flower color (RHS R52B) with green disc center and semi-double flower. It has large-sized flowers which average flower diameter is about 12.8 cm. And inner ray floret and disc diameters are 7.87 cm and 2.57 cm, respectively. It has an adequate peduncle height of 48.6 cm, and a longer vase life of 10.8 days. It is vigorous in growth and also adaptable to the local cultural environments of Korea. It is expected that if the 'Paspin' cultivar will be planted, the royalty fees to be paid to other countries can be saved. And the local growers will also be benefitted since the cost of cultivars will be lower than the imported ones.

To investigate the effect of night minimum temperature on growth and flower development in standard type chrysanthemum 'Baekina' during winter season, morphological characteristics and physiological disorders were compared with standard chrysanthemum 'Jinba'. Although the flower budding of 'Baekma' was delayed about 2 to the days compared with 'Jinba', the days to flowering of 54 to 59 showed no difference between the two cultivars. Flowering was delayed as minimum temperature decreased at night. The length and weight of cut flower decreased in the two cultivars as minimum temperature increased at night. In 'Baekina', the number of petals at 16 showed the highest values among other temperatures. Whereas there was no significant difference among the temperature treatments in 'Jinba'. Rosette occured only in 'Baekma', and the ratio was 11.1% at 14, 55.6% at 16, and 56.1% at 18. The inhibition of flower budding appeared only at 14 in the ratio of 17.3% in 'Baekma' and 4.0% in 'Jinba'.
To prevent salt accumulation in cut-flower rose soil through proper nutrient management, the optimum concentration of nitrogen and potassium for fertigation was investigated. For the purpose, 'Noblesse' cut-flower roses was transplanted to a sandy loam soil in a plastic house and four nutrient levels (0, 25, 50 and $100mg\;l^{-1}$) of N and K separately were applied by drip-irrigation under -20 kPa of soil moisture tension. The growth and yield responses were assessed in terms of the length, weight and number of cut-flower roses, and the nutrient availability absorbed by plant. The length of cut-flowers was not affected by N concentration, but the weight and number of cut-flowers were greatest at $50mg\;N\;l^{-1}$. For K, the length and weight of cut-flowers were greatest at 25 and $50mg\;l^{-1}$, but the number of cut-flowers were remarkably great at $50mg\;l^{-1}$. Despite of increase of N and K fertigation concentration ranged from 25 to $100mg\;l^{-1}$, there was not significant difference between the uptake concentration of plant parts. As a result, the availability of N and K in $50mg\;l^{-1}$ fertigation was highest when compared to other fertigation concentrations, while the remaining amounts of N and K to soil was very low. The results of this study suggested that N and K concentrations of $50mg\;l^{-1}$ would be adequate for the fertigation of 'Noblesse' cut-flower rose.

This research was performed to investigate the effect of light source and light quality in night break treatment on the growth and flowering of standard chrysanthemum. It was processed 4 hours (22:00-02:00) night break using LED 590, 610, 630, 660, 680nm and fluorescent lamp (mixed light of 480+540+610nm) in standard chrysanthemum 'Baekma' and 'Jinba' for 40 days from transplanting. The days to flower budding from short-day treatment of 'Baekma' were the longgest at fluorescent treatment (21.3 days) and were the shorttest at LED 590nm treatment (15.8 days) among all treatments. The days to flower budding from short-day treatment of 'Jinba' was longger with 18.0 days, 17.8 days, and 17.7 days at the fluorescent, LED 610nm, and 660nm treatments. And it was the shortest with 15.1 days in LED 590nm treatment. Similarly, the days to flowering from short-day treatment of 'Baekma' was the longgest with 56.9 days at fluorescent treatment, and was the shorttest in 51.6 days about LED 590 nm treatment. The days to flowering from short-day treatment of 'Jinba' was longer at fluorescent (56.0 days) and LED 660nm (56.7 days) treatments and was shortest at LED 590nm (52.9 days) among all treatments. Therefore, inhibition of flower bud initiation and flowering were the most effective under fluorescent treatment in case of 'Baekma', and fluorescent and LED 660nm treatments in case of 'Jinba'. The length and weight of cut flower of 'Baekma' and 'Jinba' were most excellent in fluorescent treatment in which the floral differentiation suppression effect was the best. Consequently, as to the growth and flowering of standard chrysanthemum, the treatment which was suitable as the light source and light quality for night break is regarded as the fluorescent lamp, and also under LED 660nm up to a certain level.
This study was carry out to investigate the effect of supplemental lighting on the growth and flowering of Rosa hybrida 'Nobles' in winter. Supplemental lighting was treated during 5 hours at night with sodium lamp and fluorescent lamp, and cut flowers harvested 2 times for the experimental period. After supplemental lighting, air temperature and slab temperature in glasshouse was higher in sodium lamp treatment than control. Realtive humidity was low in sodium lamp treatment. Total nitrogen phosphate, potassium, calcium, and magnesium contents of stem in sodium lamp treatment were higher compare to the other treatment. In sodium lamp treatment, the potassium and magnesium content of leaf in control were lower than the others. Chlorophyll content was not different by source of lighting. Stem length and diameter was longer in sodium lamp treatment. In two times, the yield was highest in sodium lamp treatment. Therefore, supplemental lighting with sodium lamp in winter season was recommended for improving the yield and quality in cut rose 'Nobles'.
