  • Detailed survey of the rock mass is essential for design, construction and maintenance of rock slope. However, geological survey of poor outcrops and various geophysical aids provides limited information for slope engineering. Remote measurement system for excavation surface (Surface Mapper) and projection s/w for borehole data (Fracjection) are developed for further support of slope surveying. The Surface Mapper measures orientation of joint, fault, foliation on excavated rock surface and database the measured data. The Fracjection projects measurements in boreholes, which are obtained by BIPS, Televideo and DOM operation, to any expected excavation space. These methods promise new approaches for surveying, designing, constructing and maintaining processes of slope.

  • Blasting methods are frequently used in case of forming slope artificially like slope cutting and open-cut method in the downtown area because of many economical and effective advantages. It is important that blasting work is carried out maintaining original strength of rock and not to damage rock face. And it is also considered that blasting method to decrease ground vibration is essential to the point of blast damages due to the ground vibration. In this study, to form a smooth plane of rock slope face, many trial blasts were carried out in this way that explosives were installed in detonating cord by equal interval in different charging method and stemming method. Using 4 blasting patterns in total 60 blast holes and 20 times of blasts were carried out. At the same time ground vibration measurements were carried out 15~102m away from the blast source, and total number of 310 data were obtained. Measured data for ground vibration velocity were analyzed so as to study blasting method to protect slope plane while decreasing blast vibration in an effective way.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the problem of analysis method of circular sliding, which uses a high rate to work out a countermeasure for landslides. The results of this study were summarized as follows : 1. As a result of the analysis of sliding surface along the soil layers in forty model slopes, the boundary layer in weathered soil and weathered rock indicated a very high possibility of sliding than in other places. 2. Because most landslides in Korea occur along the discontinuity face at the boundary of soil layers, below 2m. from land surface, it is a good method for safe design to work the countermeasure for these kinds of landslides in cutting slopes. 3. When the inclination of slopes is fixed and the length of slopes is changed, the cercular sliding slopes were more safe as the soil layers are more shallow and the length of slopes are shorter, but the safety ratio of infinite sliding slopes was same as the other even though their length of slopes was different. 4. As a result of the analysis by cercular sliding analysis method and infinite sliding analysis method with some condition that the inclination of slopes was $30^{\circ}$ degree, because most landslides in Korea occur at this condition, these methods indicated different results to each other as well as cercular sliding analysis method showed too much safety ratio than infinite sliding analysis method.

  • In order to evaluate applicability of rock cut-slope investigation system, typical clinometer and photogrammetry investigation system were used for rock slopes; first for 7 discontinuities, and secondly, 10 discontinuities, and the results were compared. The first verification was performed depending on discontinuity joint shapes and slope angles, and the second verification was performed depending on shot time and shot locations. The results showed that differences of dip direction $1^{\circ}{\sim}4^{\circ}$, dip $0^{\circ}{\sim}4^{\circ}$. In the second verification test, the differences of dip direction was $0^{\circ}{\sim}6^{\circ}$, and dip $0^{\circ}{\sim}6^{\circ}$. The photogrammetry method for rock slope survey system is quite reliable when clinometer generally shows ${\pm}10^{\circ}$ errors due to surface roughness and investigator.

  • A probabilistic model for the progressive failure in a homogeneous soil slope consisting of strain-softening material is presented. The local safety margin of any slice above failure surface is assumed to follow a normal distribution. Uncertainties of the shear strength along potential failure surface are expressed by one-dimensional random field models. In this paper, only the case where failure initiates at toe and propagates up to the crest is considerd. The joint distribution of the safety margin of any two adjacent slices above the failure surface is assumed to be bivariate normal. The overall probability of the sliding failure is expressed as a product of probabilities of a series of conditional el.eats. Finally, the developed procedure has been applied in a case study to yield the reliability of a cut slope.

  • Acid Rock Drainage(ARD) is the product formed by the atmospheric(i.e. by water, oxygen and carbon dioxide) oxidation of the relatively common iron-sulphur mineral pyrite($FeS_2$). ARD causes the acidification and heavy metal contamination of water and soil and the reduction of slope stability. In this paper the generation characteristics and the prediction of ARD of various cut slopes were studied. An attempt to classify the rocks into several groups according to their acid generation potentials was made. Acid Base Accounting(ABA) tests, commonly used as a screening tool in ARD predictions, were performed. Fourteen rock samples were classified into PAF(potentially acid forming) group and four rock samples into NAF(non-acid forming) group. The chemical analysis of water samples strongly suggested that ARD with high content of heavy metals and low pH could pollute the ground water and/or stream water.

  • 299 railroad slopes were investigated and the failure characteristics and reinforcement patterns were analyzed. Stability analyses on the 14 cut-off soil slopes were carried out. Surficial failures were predicted by infinite slope analyses assuming the temporarily perched ground water table at soil surface during rainfall period. Limit equilibrium analyses were also carried out and the influences of rainfall infiltration on the slope stabilities were taken Into account by seepage analyses using finite element method and by assuming ground water tables to be located adjacent to soil surface. The adequacy of those analyses was evaluated by comparing the slope failure characteristics between analysis results and the past failure records. From the comparison results, it was deduced that the limit equilibrium analyses were not appropriate to estimate the shallow failure that occurred at most of the railroad cut-off soil slopes. For the better estimation of the surficial failure, not only the increase of pore-water pressure (reduction of matric suction), but also the influence of water flows over slope surface which erode soil mass, should be evaluated and considered.

  • Investigation methods of cut slope are conducted generally only geological surface survey to gain engineering geological data of cut slopes. These methods have many problems such as limitation of investigation for a special area. So geophysical investigations such as geotomography, seismic and electrical resistivity methods have been used to search for failure surface in potential failure slopes or failed slopes. But investigation method using the borehole camera is recently a used method and it is thought that this method is more reliable method than other investigation methods because of being able to see by the eyes. Therefore, this paper was conducted investigations of 4 boleholes and BIPS (Borehole Image Processing System) to search for potential sliding surfaces and was applied to obtain information of discontinuity on failed highway slope. As the results of BIPS, we could decide potential sliding surface in the slope and conducted to check slope stability. And decided slope stability measures.
