  • The detection of cutting tool states in machining is important for the automation. The information of cutting tool states in metal cutting process is uncertain. Hence a industry needs the system which can detect the cutting tool states in real time and control the feed motion. Cutting signal features must be sifted before the classification. In this paper the Fisher's linear discriminant function was applied to the pattern recognition of the cutting tool states successfully. Cutting conditions and cutting force para- meters have shown to be sensitive to tool states, so these cutting conditions and cutting force paramenters can be used as features for tool state detection.

  • Owing to the development of CNC machine tools and automatic programing software, the milling process with ball-end mill has become the most widely used process where three-dimensional precision machining is important. In this study, the ball-end milling process has been analyzed and a cutting force model has been developed to predict the cutting force acting on the ball-end mill on given machining conditions. The development of the model is based on the analysis of geometry of a ball-end mill an the oblique cutting process. The cutting edges of ball-end mills are considered as a series of infinitesimal elements and the geometry of the cutting edge element each cutting edge element is straight. The oblique cutting process in the small cutting edge element has been analyzed as orthogonal cutting process in the plane containing the cutting velocity vector and chip-flow vector. Hence, with the orthogonal cutting data obtained from orthogonal turning test, the cutting forces can be predicted through the model. The predicted cutting forces has shown a fairly good agreement with the test results in various plane cutting conditions.

  • Aluminum alloy, which is advantageous to machining and injection, makes a great contribution to shortening in delivery time, infection cycle time and reducing expense. This study presents machining conditions for mild materials and describes the difference between theoretical and practical machined surface roughnesses affected by various machining conditions. Machining results have been evaluated and analyzed under varying machining conditions. Special properties of the mild materials have been presented by the quantitative analysis and the optimal machining condition has been proposed for the mild materials.

  • In optmizing cutting condition for face milling operation, tool wear is an important maching factor. For the purpose of establishing the relationship between various maching factor and tool wear, cutting tests have been performed. As a result, hardness and chemical composition of workpiece material, chemical compositition and grain size of cutting tool and cutting speed have been selected as machining factor. In addition, relationship between feed rate and workpiece hardness has been observed. Prior to utilizing cutting condition recommended by 'Machining Data Hardbook(MDH)' as a Knowledge base, an analysis for the validity has been provided. Based on this analysis, tool life criteria applied by MDH has been modifiied. Finaly, using MDH recommended data for neural network trainning, we can compensate the result form the trained neural network for optimizing cutting condition for some given workpice and cutting tool.

  • Owing to governmental regulations and concern regarding the safety of the environment, environmental conscious machining technology has become important in today's manufacturing industries. However, cutting conditions in metal cutting processes must also consider traditional dimensions such as production cost, production time and quality of a final product. The purpose of this study is to determine the cutting conditions in achieving a balanced consideration of productivity and environmental consciousness. The environmental factors such as cutting fluid, toxicity and energy are considered in metal cutting processes. In order to consider the relationship between environmental impacts and machining parameter, two factors of the metal cutting processes in this study are considered: cutting fluid and tool life. The experimental results are provided and discussed.

  • We experimented turning SCM440, called difficult-to-cut materials in general, using tungsten carbon tool(PIO) in order to elevate machinability by a new cutting method. The cutting tool designed and made to study was cooled to -17$0^{\circ}C$ in about 1 minute by liquid nitrogen. Then, we operated cryogenic cutting by cooling tool with liquid nitrogen and stuided the effect about cutting force, chip thickness, surface roughness, behavior of tool wear and cutting temperature. In addition, we investigated the possibility that sur face roughness of workpiece can be predicted analyzing cutting characteristics.

  • Recently high speed machining is being studied actively to reduce machining time and to improve machining precision. To perform efficient high speed machining, evaluation of high speed machinability must be studied preferentially and it can be identified by investigation of cutting force, tool wear and surface roughness. In this study. the cutting force and tool wear and surface roughness are investigated in case of various cutting conditions for hardened die steel.

  • Because of high specific stiffness, the aluminum alloy has been used for various industry field. Specially, the heat-treated aluminum alloy is difficult-to-machine material and machining test is necessary to evaluate and improve the machinability. In order to manufacture the functional part, appropriate cutting condition is selected by considering surface quality, machining time, and workpiece deflection by cutting force. In this investigation, the machinability of A16061-T6 is estimated by changing cutting conditions. The variable cutting conditions are cutting speed, depth of cutting, and feed rate. The estimation is done by analysis of cutting force, surface roughness, and surface shape according to the change of cutting conditions.

  • High speed machining for higher cutting speed and feedrate lead to a increase of surface quality and material removal rate. This paper presents a study of the influence of cutting conditions on the vibration characteristics obtained by machining with face milling cutter for high speed machining. In this paper, Taguchi experimental design method which is based on orthogonal array table was applied to study vibration characteristics with high speed face milling cutter. The experimental conditions used orthogonal array of $L_{27}(3^{13})$. In this work, design and analysis of experiments is conducted to study the effects of these parameters on the vibration by using the S/N ratio, analysis of variance. Four cutting parameters namely, feed rate, champer length, cutting speed, and depth of cut were optimized with consideration of vibration characteristics.
