  • Recently, ELID (electrolytic in-process dressing) grinding technique is developed. It is possible to make a efficient precision machining of hard materials such as ceramic hard metals, and quenched steels. This paper deals with some typical applications of ELID-grinding for cylindrcal machining. The significant advantages, performance and characteristics on mirror surface grinding for external surface are described.

  • A new dressing technique with utilizes electrolytic phenomenon for realizing effective mirror surface grindings with metal bonded super-abrasive wheels is called “Electrolytic In-process Dressing Grinding”. This technique enabled metal bonded micro-grain wheels, such as micro-grain cast iron fiber bonded wheels, to be used for mirror surface finish processes effectively. But this technique requires a lot of knowledge and experience to perform. And the condition of dressing is variable according to the time. Therefore adaptation of Monitoring and Control technique is needed.

  • AE(acoustic emission) sensor has been used for a state monitoring and observation during a ultra-precision machining because AE signal, which has high frequency range, is sensitive enough. In case of ceramic fabrication, a monitoring of machining state is important because of its hard and brittle nature. A machining characteristic of ceramic is susceptibly different in accordance with variable machining conditions. In this study, Yttria($Y_2O_3$) ceramic was fabricated using the ultra-precision lapping process with in-process electrolytic dressing(IED) method. And the surface machining characteristic and AE sensor signal were compared and analyzed.

  • In recent years, grinding techniques for precision machining of astainless steel used in shaft, screw parts and clear value have been improved by using superabrasive wheel and precision grinding machine. The completion of optimum dressing of superabrasive wheel makes possible the effective percision grinding of stainless steel. However, the present dressing system cannot have control of optimum dressing of the superabrabive wheel. In this study, a new system and the grinding mechanism of optimum in-process electrolytic dressing were proposed. This system can carry out optimum in-process dressing of superabrasive wheel. Therefore, the optimum in-process electrolytic dressing is a good method to obtain the efficiency and mirror-like grinding of stainless steel(SUS304).

  • In recent years, grinding techniques for precision machining of brittle materials used in electric, optical and magnetic parts have been improved by using superabrasive wheel and precision grinding machine. The present dressing system cannot have controll of optimum dressing of the superabrasive wheel. In this study, a new system and the grinding mechanism of optimum in-process electrolytic dressing were proposed. This system can carry out optimum in-process dressing of superabrasive wheel, and give very effective control according to unstable current and gap increase. Therefore, the optimum in-process electrolytic dressing is a good method to obtain the efficiency and mirror-like grinding of brittle materials.

  • Electrolytic In-Process Dressing grinding technique which enables application of metal bond wheels with fine superabrasives in mirror surface grinding operations has developed. This paper provides charateristic evaluation of power supply supply that we developed and general charateristics of ELID grinding. The electric behaviors are compared each about two different electrode which has 1/4, 1/6 the area of entire wheel surface, and two different fluids which has 1:50, 1:30 the quantity of water was used to dillute grinding fluids. The results show that ELID grinding method is useful for mirror surface machining.

  • Recently, developments in the frontier industry have brought a rapid increase in the use of brittle materials such as silicon wafer, ferrite, sintered carbide, MgO single crystal and die steel. Because of high hardness and brittleness the cracking and chipping are apt to generate in the grinding of brittle materials, but have replaced gradually the high precision grinding. In this study, the optimum system of in-process electrolytic dressing controlled by computer was developed for improving the defects, and could maintain the optimum dressing condition at all times. The control of in-process dressing was simplified using this system, was able to maintain a stable dressing current and was unrelated to the change of dressing condition according to the variation of gap and oxide layer. Therefore, the optimum in-process electrolytic dressing system was constructed and the analysis of grinding mechanism with this system was studied.

  • MgO single crystal is widely used as a the material of high temperature resistance, but is difficult to grind because of brittleness and crack generation. Therefore, superabrasive diamond wheel is required for mirror like grinding of this material. This study describes a newly proposed optimum in-process electrolytic dressing system for carrying out effective dressing of superbrasive diamond wheel. Using this system the grinding surface of MgO single crystal was improved, the grinding force was very l9ow and crack was removed. In conclusion, this system is good to obtain the efficient grinding and mirror-like grinding without crack of MgO single crystal.

  • This paper provides a highly efficient grinding for ferrous materials using ELID-grinding method. The grinding efficiency using ELID gring method with CIFB-cBN wheel and CB-cBN wheel is compared with general grinding method with V-cBN wheel. This paper measured grinding ratio for plunge grinding and grinding resistance for traverse grinding in order to investigate grinding ability. The results show that ELID grinding methods is useful for the high efficient grinding of ferrous materials.

  • Electrolytic in-process dressing grinding technique which enables application of metal bond wheels with fine superabrasives in mirror surface grinding operations has developed. It is possible to make efficient precision machining of hard and brittle material such as ceramic and hard metal by the employment of this technique. However, in order to ensure the success of performances such as efficient machining, surface finish, and surface quality, it is important to sustain the insulating layer that has sharply exposed abrasives in wheel surface. Using AE(Acoustic Emission) sensor, this paper will show whether the insulating layer sustains stably or not in real grinding time. And by comparing AErms value and surface roughness their thresholds for stable electrolytic in-process dressing grinding will be determined.
