  • To response quickly rapidly changing threats, and to reduce development and operational maintenance budget, U.S. Navy has been significantly applied commercial communication equipments instead of MIL-SPEC equipments. Starting from Aegis Baseline 7 combat system, components of systems were replaced to COTS-based system, and Littoral Combat Ships(LCS) and Zumwalt class destroyers have fully COTS-based combat system. In this paper, it is surveyed and analyzed that cases of COTS-based systems were applied and is compared difference from each type of ships.

  • In this paper, we propose an installation approach for Naval Combat Management System(CMS) software that identifies potential data anomalies during installation. With the popularization of wireless communication methods, such as Low Earth Orbit(LEO) satellite communications, various utilization methods using wireless networks are being discussed in CMS. One of these methods includes the use of wireless network communications for installation, which is expected to enhance the real-time performance of the CMS. However, wireless networks are relatively more vulnerable to security threats compared to wired networks, necessitating additional security measures. This paper presents a method where files are transmitted to multiple nodes using encryption, and after the installation of the files, a validity check is performed to determine if there has been any tampering or alteration during transmission, ensuring proper installation. The feasibility of applying the proposed method to Naval Combat Systems is demonstrated by evaluating transmission performance, security, and stability, and based on these evaluations, results sufficient for application to CMS have been derived.

  • In this paper, the virtual environment using rack server type HPC and 3U VPX server type HPC was applied and tested to the basic functions of the Jangbogo-III class submarine combat system developed for the first time in Korea. Based on this test results, the possibility of applying virtualization to the domestic submarine combat system to be developed in the future is confirmed. Existing studies have been limited to deriving applicable virtualization solutions through simple performance analysis of virtualization solutions or applying virtualization to some functions of the surface ship combat system, but in this paper, the application of virtualization is expanded to the submarine combat system through testing.

  • This research has conducted high availability system modeling to assure the reliability of shipboard combat systems. Shipboard combat system is a way for efficient execution of duty and a crucial battlefield management system that determines the outcome of battle in the modern war. Especially in regard to a network-centric operational environment in the future, even 1% of malfunction can lead to fatal consequences for the outcome of war. So combat system should be designed by high availability system which is a "always-on" service. In this point of view, This work describes an architecture-based various high availability model and proposed alternative high available systems that can achieve more than 99.9999% accuracy at a minimum. This paper also provides an applicable model with which system engineers analyze out system failure and recovery process by employing computerized tools.

  • Aegis Combat System(ACS) is a shipboard combat system developed by U.S. Navy. Its name, Aegis, came from a shield 'Aegis' in greek mythology, which Zeus gave to his daughter Athena. U.S. Navy uses Aegis ships(ships which mount ACS) as their main surface forces. It is known as one of the greatest anti-air warfare ship in the world by its ability to detect air threats with AN/SPY-1, phased array radar, superior Target management and command and control capabilities of the combat system, and SM series interceptors. After first Aegis cruiser USS Ticonderoga was deployed at 1983, U.S. Navy continuously put effort in developing Aegis Combat Systems and Aegis ships. They also improve old fashion existing ships by modernize them. In this Paper, to deduct a lesson which Korea Navy should benchmark, it is went through that a history of Aegis ships and development of ACS, and also its feature.

  • The Naval Combat System has several equipment needed to operate the system, such as radar equipment, underwater sensor equipment, guns and missile control and armed control equipment, and a multi function console is configured to control it. The multi function console is equipped with HCI(Human Computer Interaction)-based software for displaying the status information of equipment and controlling equipment, and the operator uses the installed software to operate the Naval Combat System. However, when operating a Naval Combat System for a long time, there are problems such as physical discomfort caused by the structure of the multi function console display and increase in fatigue of the person who operates various and complicated user interface configuration. These issues are important factors in reducing Naval Combat System operability. In order to solve these issues, in this paper, based on a questionnaire survey conducted for Naval Combat System development personnel, multi function console screen design to reduce physical discomfort and HCI design to reduce fatigue and increase intuition are proposed. The proposed design is expected to provide convenience to future Naval Combat System operators and improve operation over existing Naval Combat System.
