A Study on the Adaptation of Traditional Interior Elements in Restaurants and Cafe (전통주택 실내구성요소의 현대적 계승사례에 관한연구 -월간잡지에 나타난 식음료 공간을 중심으로-)

  • A purpose of this study was to investigate actual condition of the modern adaptation of interior elements(wall, floor, ceiling. door & window) in traditional house. The examined objects were 185 pictures of restaurants and cafe interior spaces from the 5 different monthly magazines between jan. 1993. to Dec 1997. The results of this study were as follows : 1. Mostly they were either partial adaptation from the original or partially transformed adaptation rather than entire adaptation of the original. 2. Of the traditional interior elements adapted in restaurants and cafe space only specific elements were being adapted. For example partial adaptation from the original were oiled paper flooring(Jangpan) plaster wall ceiling finish that left the rafters and beams exposed(Yondung-chonjang) and window or door frame which is vertical lattices accented with horizontal lattices grouped into three sections(Ttisal-mum) And partially transformed adaptation were oiled paper flooring rice papered (Hangji) wall Yondung-chonjang window or door frame of Wan character(Wanja-mun). 3, In regard to space the mostly adapted spaces were halls rather than rooms.

A Study on the Traditional Motives in Upper-Class Houses of Chosun Dynasty (전통주택에 사용된 문양에 관한 연구 - 조선시대 상류주택을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the types and meanings of the motives shown in the traditional houses. Research methods to achieve this purpose are review of literature, field survey, and contents analysis. Traditional houses were divided into 3 parts such as architectural elements, interior elements and decoration elements, and total of 163 motives were collected out of it. As a result, it was founded that roof of the architectural element, and doors and windows of the interior elements are shown the most of the motives. Motives were divided into two types, realistic motives and imaginative motives, and both types are shown evenly. Meanings of the motives are classified into 'protection', 'good-luck', 'long-life', 'ideology', and 'decoration', and the motives of meaning of good-luck showed the most variety.

A Study on the Wumul-maru Components of Sarang-taechong in traditional Houses (전통주택 사랑대청의 우물마루 구성요소에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was the wumul-maru components of Sarang-taechong with themselves in traditional houses. Physical trace method was used for this study. The samples were taken from the Sarang-taechong of 6 traditional Korean houses, Yunkyungdang, the ancient Chusa estate, Sunkyojang, Chunghyodang, Yangjindang, Unjoru. The major findings were summarized as follows; 1) Regarding to the changgui't'ul(long board); the number was from 0(minimum) to 3(maximum), the size was $244.3{\times}4407.1mm$ on average, and the proportion was 1:18.9. 2) Regarding to the tongguit'ul(center board); the number was from 5(minimum) to 18(maximum), the size $188.7{\times}2374mm$ on average, and the proportion was 1:12.9. 3) Regarding to the marunol; the number was from 42(minimum) to 155(maximum), the size was $247{\times}574mm$ on average and the proportion was 1:2.29.

  • Finishing materials and colors which were expressed in the space is an important factor to decide the imagination of the space. Therefore if we analyze and spotlight the space with that factors again, we will readily know the characteristics that are expressed in our living space. A purpose of this study is how the traditionality like national thoughts, customs and behavior patterns is changed, arranged and expressed in the korean housing space in the 21c on the finishing materials and colors. Though this study we can know that the traditionality which are expressed in modern housing spaces shows with accommodating to characteristic that is expressed in traditional housing spaces.

  • The purpose of this study is to dlassify into types of traditionality reflected in modern Korean houses in 1990's designed by architec Modern houses were divided into five types through qualitative analysis. Analysis is categorized into three parts, space-pl structural elements ornamental elements. Characteristics of each type were defined as 'Indicative expression of the traditionalit', 'Decorative expression of the traditionality', 'Eclectic expression of the traditionality', 'Contemporary expression of the traditionalit', 'Abstract expression of the traditionality'. The results showed that 'Contemporary or Abstract expression of traditionality(type IV and V) were major types of modern Korean houses expressed traditionality. This reveals that in order to apply traditionality to the modern houses, simplifed and sbstracted for were preferred comparing with the direct imitation of traditional forms.

  • The human scale of the interior space of a korean traditional residence is normally user-friendly. And this aspect is reinterpreted and implemented in the modern structure. While our conscious awareness has become greatly westernized through the east-west exchanges, the interior of the traditional Korean residence has always reflected the people and their daily lives of the time. In this study, an attempt has been made to identify the aesthetic characteristics of the inner space elements through the analysis of visual perception inside a Korean traditional upper class residence, kangreung Sunkyojang, designated as the 5th Cultural Information Material with regards to the inherent philosophy and human scale that influenced the emotions of the Korean people. The different parts of the interior space of Anchae, and the Symmetrical of Formal, Balance of the walls give a sense of calmness, and the ornaments are used to give gaiety. The ceiling of Yeolwhadang hall give an energetic feeling and pillare are used to enhance spaciousness. In Whalejeong, by making use of similar and continuous lines, the light and darkness was controlled and the link with nature has been emphasized. Different decorations used reflect scholarly spirit.

  • This study aims to understand the unique housing culture and decoration style in traditional Thai houses. Literature review and site visit were applied for the research method. A steep gable roof, a lifted floor structure on the pillars, a semi-enclosed central flatform(charn) and a outdoor staircase are important plastic elements of exterior decoration in Thai traditional houses. 'Panlom(windbreak on gable)' and 'fa loog fak(wall panel)' are the most unique elements which determine Thai traditional style. In Thai traditional style decoration, the beautifully carved wooden panels and decorations are also the most important factors. The decorations can be analyzed in the aspect of following perspectives. ; The characteristics of Thai traditional house decorations have been developed and evolved as result of influences from regional climate and local material. And also the social-cultural factors such as religion, social and family relationship and life style controlled the forms and culture of traditional housing form and culture. As a result, this study summarises and defines the outstanding and unique meaning and definition of the decoration in Thai traditional houses focused on central region in Thailand.

Of the traditional interior elements adapted in residential space only specific elements were being adapted.   • CHOOSA GORACK which is a typical example of traditional houses in the CHO SEON dynasty consists of the four terraced builfing group. Among those,SADANG CHAI are located in the highest level,and SADANG CHAI and SADANG CHAI are toward south direction.It means that building orientation and level were influenced by the distinction of social level and the idea of ancester worship. Floor and ceiling level in the same building is different which was caused by the distinetion of social level in the CHO SEON dynasty and an ariental dual as a variety of openings,exposed ceilings,and furniture against a wall were creating a typical Korean visual harmony. Although the furniture and equipments were very important elements in ONDOL BANG the occupance ratio of these were low because the free space in BANG should be utilized effectively to accommodate the space variation.Both an AN CHAI and SARANG CHAI were composed by the standard space module called KAN.And interior elements were established by several factors such as the human scale,the behavior pattern in traditional sitting life style, and the lumber size of post and lintel construction of Korean house.BANG and DAE GHUNG, composed of KAN,were expanded and arranged side by side so that the natural light and ventilation through them could be used in the result of the kind of lay out,traffic circulation was disturved.In conclusion,CHOOSA GOTACK was formed by the sirect effice of the KOREAN penisula. However this study was based on one sample. It may not enough to deduct soild conclusion.Therefore continuous and farher study is needed for the sestemane evaluation.
