  • We found following evidences from our empirical analysis with the Workplace Panel Survey data of the Korea Labor Institute with reference to 'discord hypothesis' which insists that employee participatory high performance work practices would strengthen not only an enterprise focus in labor-management relations but also the enterprise unionism in the labor union system or collective bargaining structures, so they would probably come into conflict with the superenterprise-oriented industrial solidarity spirit in labor unionism. First, even though there are significant positive management performance effects of high performance work practices, especially in case of mining and manufacturing industries, the positive performance effects of employee participatory work practices such as job rotation ratio of workers and 6-sigma activities were much strengthened relatively in case of non-unionized establishments. Second, the superenterprise-oriented collective bargaining system is also found to give very strong and statistically significant negative performance effects to the introduction and implementation of work teams and performance-related payment systems such as profit sharing, group incentive pay system and so on. Although there are some careful reservations in interpreting the results of our analysis because of data insufficiency, they may have important implications that the industrial labor unionism or the superenterprise-oriented collective bargaining practices exercise the bargaining power to make individual firms be negative or feel it nearly impossible to introduce the employee participatory work practices which can be very favorable to improving those management performance.

  • The compensation system in industrial accident insurance is systemized with "either receiving all or no benefits at all" according to "admited or denied as an industrial accident". Therefore, they are centered on the decision as "industrial accident" or "non-industrial accident", but judging between the two is very complicated, and has inherent conflicting factors. In the early stage of industrialization, industrial accident compensation was based on the indemnity liability for employer's faults. In order to be compensated any damage, the injured worker should prove that the accident was not due to his or her faults. However it was very difficult for injured worker or his or her family to prove the employer's faults, so it was almost impossible to get compensation. Thereafter industrialization progress and improvement of workers' political status lead to conversion from principle of liability with employer's faults to principle of liability without employer's faults. In addition to that, coverage of industrial accident compensation was also expanded. This improvement strengthened the benefit payment principle of "All or Nothing". Even though the "All or Nothing" principle provokes tremendous criticism, the reason why it's difficult for industrialized countries to adopt partial compensation system, is that partial compensation system worsens the administrative hardship, therefore industrialized countries overcome the restrictions of the "All or Nothing" principle with making balance in provisions for any risk to some extent. However, in Korea because the general compensation system for covering medical cost and income loss from accidents, is not equipped, it could be possible to cause acute conflicts with regard to coverage of industrial accidents. Therefore it is required to improve the industrial accident insurance with the acceptance of the significance and logic of discriminated compensation, and create the integrated compensation system in the long run.

  • This study was carried out to develop a new traditional alcoholic beverage by using lily scale in order to utilize lily scale as a new matter for nutritious foods. The condition of alcohol fermentation was investigated by the addition of 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0, 12.5 and 15.0% dried lily scale and 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% raw lily scale into mash, respectively. The maximum amount of ethanol was produced when 15% dried lily scale and 20% raw lily scale were added to cooked rice at $25^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. In overall acceptability of sensory evaluation, the LSD-5 alcoholic beverage (added 5% dried lily scale into mash) and LSR-20 alcoholic beverage (added 20% raw lily scale into mash) showed the best acceptability. Physiological functionalities of LSD-5 and LSR-20 alcoholic beverage were investigated. Electron donating ability by DPPH solution ($16.5{\sim}23.2%$), SOD-like activity ($20.4{\sim}24.7%$), ACE inhibitory activity ($24.7%{\sim}78.2%$) and tyrosinase inhibitory activity ($57.4{\sim}62.6%$) of LSD-5 and LSR-20 alcoholic beverage were better than the control (non-added liquor). Moreover, acceptability and physiological functionalities of LSD-5 alcoholic beverage are better than LSR-20.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of browning inhibitors during fermentation and storage of rice-grape wine. Bentonite, polyvinylopolypyrrolidone (PVPP), and potassium metabisulfite were added to rice-grape wine during fermentation and storage in order to find an effective method of inhibiting browning. Total phenolics content, pH, amino acidity, hydroxymethylfurfural content, and absorbance at 420 nm were measured during storage to assess the effects of the different browning substrates. Potassium metabisulfite was the most effective browning inhibitior. Sensory evaluation also showed that rice-grape wine treated with potassium metabisulfite was highly Preferable in terms of color, taste, flavor, and overall quality.

  • Samil-ju, the traditional Korean rice wine was brewed and distilled using different columns (unpacked and packed) at different pressure (760, 460, 260 mmHg). Fractions of distillate were collected and analyzed. The sample wine, Samil-ju showed the following compositions; ethanol 14%, total acidity 16.2 g/100 ml, reducing sugar 7.9 mg/ml, total sugar 8.4 mg/ml, acetaldehyde 6 ppm, fusel oil acetaldehyde and ethyl acetate 6 ppm. As distillation proceeds, contents of ethanol, methanol, fusel oil, acetaldehyde and ethyl acetate were decreased but total acidity was increased. Generally at reduced pressure, all the constituents but total acidity showed more decrease than those at atmospheric pressure. In the 1st, 2nd and 3rd fractions of the distillate, ethanol contents were maintained at about 70% but those contents decreased abruptly to below 50% from the 5th fraction. Sixteen sensory characteristics were identified as quality factors of distillate. Among them, four characteristics were identified as aroma properties, seven as tastes and five as aftertastes. Nuruk and cooling flavor were considered as important factors which affect greatly the sensory quality of distillate. Among various fractions, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th fractions obtained from unpacked column at 260 mmHg showed the highest score in the overall quality. The compositions of these fractions were ranged as follows; methanol $24{\sim}36\;ppm$, total acidity $0.21{\sim}0.29\;g/100\;ml$, fusel oil 657-1340 ppm, acetaldehyde $12{\sim}41\;ppm$, and ethylacetate $22{\sim}311\;ppm$, respectively.

  • This study aims to investigate the aspect of volunteering and donation of highschool students in Seongnam city and further the relationship between volunteering and democratic civic consciousness. To that end, 155 students from an ordinary highschool and a foreign language highschool participated in a survey. The result showed that female students' participation rates of volunteering and monetary donations were higher than male students' but there was no difference in the participation rates between the schools. The civic consciousness level was not affected by the gender, but was affected by the schools. The scores for the attitude of democracy were better than those for the value and the participation of democracy. In particular, the students from the foreign language highschool had higher scores for the participation of democracy relative to the students from the highschool. As for the relationship between volunteering and democratic civic consciousness, there was a significant difference in civic consciousness scores between students who had participated in volunteering and those who had not, only in the case of the students from the ordinary highschool. Additionally, it was revealed volunteering and donating were compensatory behavior. Although single factors in volunteering influencing the civic consciousness were not found, persistence was important.

  • This research looks into the narrative aspect of news in order to disclose problems with intercultural communication in our society. News on racial issues and "Hanryu" would illustrate cultural bias against others. This study attempts to analyze narrative structures of news on these issues using narrative theories including Greimas and Levi-Strauss. It covers news on major newspapers such as Chosun, Jung Ang, Dong A, Hanguerae and Economy Daily as well as major broadcasting news including KBS, SBS and MBC. There were 495 news on 'Hanryu' and racial issues with regard to Hines Ward from January 1, 2006 to April 15, 2006. By analysing narrative structures of these news, I found power underneath news messages which undermine the reality. Expansionism and cultural insensibility prevent our society from understanding other cultures as they are. Post-colonial theories provide a guideline for detecting intercultural barriers and national identity crisis in our society.

  • Social enterprise has moved from periphery to take center stage. Social enterprises are a truly global phenomenon and associated with solving social problems with business approaches. While the numbers of social enterprises have grown and their impact is likely to continue to do so, it would be dangerous to assume that the revolutionary momentum will automatically continue, because social enterprise faced sustainability challenges. This study collected the data from directory of Korean Social Enterprise to conduct a quantitative research on the growth of social enterprise in South Korea. This study conducted longitudinal analysis of 491 social enterprise certified between 2007 and 2010, of economic performance with financial index and social impact with employment structure. Though global financial crisis, Korean social enterprises show that there is a considerable increase in all of quantitative and qualitative aspects. Korean social enterprises have provided meaningful work to those normally excluded from the labour market and tried to raise their life of working. In the future, Korean social enterprises should find a way to balance social and financial performance and ensure the sustainability of the business.
