  • The durability and safety of reinforced concrete structures significantly depend on the reinforcement conditions, concrete cover thickness, cracks, and concrete strength. There are two ways to accurately determine the information on reinforcing bars embedded in concrete - the local destructive method and the non-destructive rebar detection test. In general, the non-destructive rebar detection tests, such as the electromagnetic wave radar method, electromagnetic induction method, and radiation method, are adopted to avoid damage to the structural elements. The moisture content and temperature of concrete affect the dielectric constant, which is the electrical property of concrete, and cause interference in the non-destructive rebar detection test results. Therefore, in this study, the effects of the electromagnetic wave radar method and electromagnetic induction method have been analyzed according to the temperature and surface moisture content of concrete. Due to the technological advancement and development of equipment, the average error rate was less than 5% in the specimens at 24℃, irrespective of their operating principles. Among the tested methods, the electromagnetic induction method showed very high accuracy. The electromagnetic wave radar method indicated a relatively small error rate in the dry state than in the wet state, and exhibited a relatively high error rate at high temperatures. It was confirmed that the error could be reduced by applying the electromagnetic wave radar method when the temperature of the probe was low and in a dry state, and by using the electromagnetic induction method when the probe was in a wet state or at a high temperature.

  • Probing inside of concrete structures is one of the important steps in assessing condition of the structure. For the assessment, electromagnetic induction method and electromagnetic wave method are currently applied to the measurement of cover depth, and the detection of reinforcement embedded in concrete. To determine detection capability of locating reinforcement embedded in concrete, commercially available nondestructive testing (NDT) equipments have been tested. The equipments include electromagnetic wave system and electromagnetic induction system. In the tests, nine concrete specimens which have the dimensions of 1,000mm(length))${\times}$300mm(width) with thickness varying from 125mm to 150mm are used. The reinforcement are located at 45, 60, 100mm depth from the concrete surface. Horizontal reinforcement spacing has been set over 100mm. From the outcome, it is shown that error is increased as the diameter of reinforcement enlarge in case of using electromagnetic induction method. In case of using electromagnetic wave method, the detection of reinforcement embedded in deep is good in the view of reliability because of using the relative permittivity on the real cover depth.

  • The radar method is becoming one of the major nondestructive testing(NDT) techniques lot concrete structures. Numerical modeling of electromagnetic wane is needed to analyze radar measurement results. Finite difference-time domain(FD-TD) method can be used to simulate electromagnetic wave propagation through concrete specimens. Five concrete specimens with different thickness are modeled in 3-dimension. Radar modeling results compare measurement results to find backface of the concrete specimens and measure thickness of the concrete specimens.

  • More than effectively judging the existence of reinforcing bars under multi boundary layers and void shapes in concrete, this study aims to develop the analysis algorithm of radar response on multi boundary layers in reinforced concrete and radar capable of estimation of the shape of specific voids in plain concrete. To detect or estimate reinforcing bars and void shapes in these conditions, the simulation analysis model of transmission and reflection wave of electromagnetic radar is used. This radar simulation model is carried out with reinforced or non reinforced concrete of various boundary conditions and void shapes. And, the output signals (images) of radar simulation results are calculated and represented by convolution method. As the results, it is clarified that this simulation analysis technique can be used to analyze radar response on multi boundary layers in reinforced concrete and void shapes in concrete.

  • In this paper, an efficient algorithm is developed to perform target rotational motion compensation to achieve the clear inverse synthetic aperture radar(ISAR) image. The algorithm is based on a time-frequency technique. This algorithm provides an efficient method to resolve the blurring image caused by the time-varying behavior of the target scattering centers and leads to a well-focused ISAR image. Results demonstrate that the time-frequency techniques can improve the blurring ISAR image when an aircraft is in complex motion, such as maneuvering, rotation and acceleration.

  • When a FM-CW radar is used to measure the target distance, the nonlinearity relationship between the VCO control voltage and the output frequency makes an adverse effect on the measurement accuracy. Recently, many nonlinearity correction schemes using signal processing techniques and dedicated hardwares have been studied. This paper presents a signal processing technique to compensate for the VCO nonlinearity using a reference signal. To demonstrate the validity of the presented technique, several experiments were conducted and the results show reduction of the distortion in the range profile and the resolution improvement.

  • The presence of voids behind tunnel linings is very likely to result in settlement or structural collapse. One proposed method of detecting such voids by non-destructive method is radar. More than effectively judging the existence of voids behind tunnel linings, this study aims to develop the analysis algorithm of radar capable of estimation of the shape of specific voids. To acquire directional information and estimate the shape of three-dimensional voids, the radar of three-dipole antenna type is used. As a foundation to this ongoing research, an investigation of microwave polarization methods using three-dipole antenna carried out with various void orientations and void geometries. As a result, it is clarified that the response of four microwave polarization modes depends on void geometry and thus there is a possibility of identifying the geometry and orientation (the shape) of specific voids using radar of three-dipole antenna type.

  • Jet engine modulation(JEM) is a frequency modulation phenomenon of the radar signal induced by electromagnetic scattering from a rotating jet engine turbine. Although JEM can be used as a representative radar target recognition method by providing unique information on the target, its recognition performance may be degraded in the observation range of weakly present JEM. Hence, this paper presents a method for extracting the JEM component by decomposing the radar signal into intrisic mode functions(IMFs) via complex empirical mode decomposition(CEMD) and by combining them based on signal eccentricity. Its application to various signals demonstrated that the proposed method improved the clarity of JEM analysis and could extend the effective observation range of JEM.
