  • This paper proposes a new method to reduce the overhead by pilots for single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) transmission. In the conventional SC-FDE transmission structure, the overhead by transmitting pilot are heavy because the pilot are transmitted at every SC-FDE block. The proposed SC-FDE structure has fewer pilots and many SC-FCE blocks are transmitted between pilots. The channel estimation and equalization is performed at the pilot period and the channels between pilots are estimated through linear interpolation. This reduces the pilot overhead by reducing the pilot transmission compared with the conventional structure, and enables reliable channel estimation and equalization.

  • In this paper, we propose a new SC-FDE (single carrier frequency domain equalization) structure to cope with narrow band interference signals or jammers and reduce pilot overhead. The conventional SC-FDE structure has a problem that the receiver performance degrades severely due to difficulty in time-domain channel estimation when narrow band jammers exist. In addition, the spectral efficiency is lowered by transmitting pilot at every SC-FDE block to estimate channel response. In order to overcome those problems, the proposed structure is devised to estimate frequency domain channel directly without time domain channel estimation. To reduce the pilot overhead, several data blocks are transmitted between two pilots. The channel estimate of each data block is found through linear interpolation of two channel estimates at two pilots. By performing frequency domain channel equalization using this channel estimate, the distortion by the channel is well compensated when narrow band jammers exist. The performance of the proposed structure is confirmed by computer simulation.

  • We propose a pilot hopping scheme that improves the limited system capacity due to pilot contamination in multi-cell environment with large-scale antenna arrays at a base station, assuming the infinite number of antennas. In the conventional fixed pilot scheme, each user obtains the same signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) over a long period of time. Therefore, a user with strong interference has continuously low SIR which degrades its service quality. In the proposed pilot hopping scheme, different pilot signals are used for each time slot, and different amounts of interference are received every time. When such a pilot hopping technique is applied, the SIR fluctuates at every time slot. When the Hybrid Automatic Repeat & reQuest (HARQ) technique is applied in such a channel, the outage probability and transmission rate are improved. We show that there is the performance gain of the proposed scheme over the conventional scheme through computer simulations.

  • OFDM is a very attractive technique for achieving high-bit-rate data transmission and high spectrum efficiency in fading environment. However, the reliable detection of an OFDM signal in time-varying multipath fading channels is a challenging problem. Accordingly, various channel estimation methods have been proposed for performance improvement. But, conventional pilot patterns for channel estimation in OFDM systems have not robust characteristics relating to various mobile speed. To solve this drawback in conventional patterns, we propose the pilot patterns modified from conventional patterns to have a good error performance in time-varying fading channel. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed pilot patterns is better than conventional patterns in fast time-varying channel.

  • Recently, 5G cellular systems have been attracted great attention as a key enabler for Industry 4.0. In this paper, we propose a novel random access based on pilot-assisted opportunistic transmission to support internet-of-things (IoT) scenario in cellular networks. A key feature of our proposed scheme is to enable each of IoT devices to attempt opportunistic transmission of its data packet in Step 3 with randomly selected uplink pilot signal. Both the opportunistic transmission and the pilot randomization in Step 3 are effective to significantly mitigate the occurrence of packet collisions. We mathematically analyze our proposed scheme in terms of packet collision probability and uplink resource efficiency. Through simulations, we verify the validity of our analysis and evaluate the performance of our proposed scheme. Numerical results show that our proposed scheme outperforms other competitive schemes.

  • A closed loop wireless transmission method adaptive to mobile unit speed is proposed in this paper. A mobile communication node measures the mobile speed based on the transmitted pilot signals through Doppler frequency estimation, and it changes the transmission period of pilot signals as per estimated mobile speed adaptively. The pilot signals with the different transmission periods are transmitted using the different PN sequences with the previous ones without any explicit information about the new period. The corresponding receiver node can detect and extract the transmitted pilot signals through blind search of the transmitted PN sequences of the pilot signals, and it can demodulate and decode the transmitted information using the channel estimation results based on the detected pilot signals. The performance of the proposed method had been analyzed through the simulation under the fading channel environments and compared with the previous methods. The simulation results showed performance improvement of the proposed method over the existing ones.

  • The performance of pilot-symbol-assisted channel estimation widely used for OFDM systems is degraded due to the small number of pilot symbols used for higher transmission efficiency. In this paper, we propose a pilot symbol based channel estimation using cross-correlation to improve the estimation performance of the OFDM system with small number of pilot symbols. The proposed technique detects a data symbol using the channel estimated by the pilot symbol and estimates the channel using the estimated data symbol and the pilot symbol. It is shown by computer simulations that the proposed technique outperforms the conventional pilot symbol assisted estimation technique.

  • Pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) can be used for the channel estimation. However, imperfect channel estimates degrade the bit error rate (BER) performance. I derive the exact BER of 16-level quadrature amplitude modulated (16-QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with PSAM in time dispersive Rayleigh fading channels. In real system, there is 2.5 dB penalty in $\overline{\gamma_b}$for the same BER relative to ideal system with perfect channel estimation.

  • STBC is a technique where a multiple antenna signals are transmitted. With this technique, antenna diversity can be achieved. The performance of STBC OFDM system using pilot symbol for the channel estimation is analyzed. IEEE 802.16e standards suggest that the BER performance of STBC system can be improved using channel state information. Pilot symbol is used for the channel estimation in OFDM systems. However, imperfect channel estimates in this systems degrade the performance. The performance of this STBC OFDM systems using channel state information, gauged by the average bit error rate, is analyzed considering the channel estimation error.
