CFD Analysis of Aerodynamic Characteristics of Regional Turboprop Aircraft Propeller (중형 터보프롭 항공기급 프로펠러 공력특성 전산해석)

  • Propeller shall have high efficiency and improved aerodynamic characteristics to get the thru5t to fly at high speed for the Regional turboprop aircraft. That is way Clark-Y airfoil which is used to conventional turboprop aircraft propeller is selected as a blade airfoil. Adkins method is used for aerodynamic design and performance analysis with respect to the propeller design point. Adkins method is based on the vortex-blade element theory which design the propeller to satisfy the condition for minimum energy loss. propeller geometry is generated by varying chord length and pitch angle at design point of Regional turboprop aircraft. The propeller design results indicate that is evaluated to be properly constructed, through analysis of propeller aerodynamic characteristics using the Meshless method and MRF, SM method.

  • Aerothermodynamic characteristics of re-entry vehicles in hypersonic speed regimes are investigated by applying CFD methods based on the Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations. A special emphasis is placed on the effects of high temperature chemically reacting gases on shock stand-off distance and thermal characteristics of the flowfields. A ten species model is used for describing the kinetic mechanism for high temperature air. In particular, the hypersonic flows around a cylinder are computed with and without chemically reacting effects. It is shown that, when the chemically reacting effects are taken into account, the shock stand-off distance and temperature are significantly reduced.

  • Researches in the area of aeroacoustics have been conducted by two methods. In the first method theoretical formula or experimentation are utilized, and in the second method flow field analysis and acoustic analogy are utilized. In contrast to the first method, the second method does not need new experiments for every individual change of flow configurations and conditions, and it can predict their effects by the flow field analysis, which makes the second method preferred than the first one. In this paper numerical analysis to predict noise generated by a turbulent flow about a two dimensional circular cylinder by use of CAA (Computational Aeroacoustics) method is conducted and the results are compared to the available experimental data.

  • Mass manufacturing of optical fiber includes the process of very thin glass fiber drawing by heating and softening the high purity silica preform and applying the draw tension on the softened tip of preform neck-down profile in a draw furnace. In this computational study, this process is numerically modeled with simplified geometry of the draw furnace which is comprised of essential parts such as concentric graphite heater, muffle tube, and insulation surrounding the heater. The iterative computational scheme is employed between one-dimensional model of neck-down profile prediction and two-dimensional axisymmetric thermo-fluid CFD computation of radiative heating and working gas convection. The computational results show the experimentally observed neck-down profile in heated section of preform, while yielding the reasonable values of draw tension and heater wattage. Also, this study analyzes and discusses the effects of heating conditions such as heater length and temperature on several important aspects of glass fiber drawing process.

  • The prediction of hydrate pellet decomposition characteristics is required to design the regasification process of GTS (gas to solid) technology, which is considered as an economic alternative for LNG technology to transport natural gas produced from small and stranded gas wells. Mathematical model based on the conservation principles, the phase equilibrium relation, equation of gas state and phase change kinetics was set up and numerical solution procedure employing volume averaged fixed grid formulation and extended enthalpy method are implemented. Initially, porous methane hydrate pellet is at uniform temperature and pressure within hydrate stable region. The pressure starts to decrease with a fixed rate down to the final pressure and is kept constant afterwards while the bounding surface of pellet is heated by convection. The predicted convective heat and mass transfer accompanied by the decomposed gas flow through hydrate/ice solid matrix is reported focused on the comparison of spherical and cylindrical pellets having the same effective radius.

AERODYNAMIC AND NOISE CALCULATIONS OF HELICOPTER ROTOR BLADES USING LOOSE CFD-CSD COUPLING METHODOLOGY (CFD-CSD 연계 기법을 이용한 로터 블레이드 공력 및 소음 해석)

  • The aerodynamic and noise calculations were performed through the CFD-CSD loose coupling methodology. In the loose coupling process, the trimmed rotor airloads were predicted by the in-house CFD code based on unstructured overset meshes, and the trim of the rotorcraft and the aeroelastic deformation of rotor blades were accounted with the CAMRAD II rotorcraft comprehensive code. The set of codes was used to analyze the HART-II baseline test condition. The effect of grid resolution and time step was examined and the loose coupling approach was found to be stable and convergent for the case. Comparison of the resulting sectional airloads, structural deformations, the noise carpets and the wake geometry with experimentally measured data was presented and showed the good agreement.

  • Recently, there have been efforts to construct hybrids among the existing methodologies for multiphase flow such as VOF, Level Set, and Front Tracking with the intention of facilitating simulations of general three-dimensional problems. As one of the hybrid method, we have developed the Level Contour Reconstruction Method (LCRM) for general three-dimensional multiphase flows including phase change. The main idea was focused on simplicity and a robust algorithm especially for the three-dimensional case. It combines characteristics of both Front Tracking and Level Set methods. While retaining an explicitly tracked interface using interfacial elements, the calculation of a vector distance function plays a crucial role in the periodic reconstruction of the interface elements in the LCRM method to maintain excellent mass conservation and interface fidelity. In addition, compact curvature formulation is incorporated for the calculation of the surface tension force thereby reducing parasitic currents to a negligible level.

  • Plate Heat Exchnager(PHE) has recently become widely adopted for cogeneration systems owing to its small installation space and high thermal efficiency. The gap between plates can be changed depending on its assemble type, i.e. gasket or blazing. The gap is known to affect thermal efficiency and working pressure drop in PHE with complicated geometrical features. Numerical simulation techniques have been developed to deal with PHE with complex configuration of chevron plates. The present study is aiming at identifying the gap effect on pressure drop and thermal efficiency of the PHE. The numerical simulation results show that the gap has relatively large effects on working pressure drop than thermal efficiency in performance of PHE.

  • Numerical analysis of two dimensional incompressible laminar free jet flow was carried out by using finite difference SMAC scheme. Flow characteristics of free jet flow such as jet width, similarity of jet velocity and hypothetical origin were investigated for different Reynolds numbers of Re=30 and 100. The reliability of predictions were confirmed by comparison with exact solution. Non-dimensional velocity distribution showed similarity of jet flow velocity after initial region. In the region of laminar flow, the location of hypothetical origin becomes more distant with Reynolds number.

  • This paper presents three-dimensional flow analysis for a mixed-flow pump which consists of a rotor and a stator. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with shear stress transport turbulence model are discretized by finite volume approximations and solved by the commercial CFD code CFX 11.0. Structured grid system is constructed in the computational domain, which has O-type grids near the blade surfaces and H-type grids in other regions. Validation of the numerical results was performed with experimental data for head coefficients and hydraulic efficiencies at different flow coefficients. This paper shows that the pump characteristics can be predicted effectively by numerical analysis.
