  • The design of reactor internals requires the accurate vibration characteristics of each component for subsequent dynamic structural response analyses. For Korean standard nuclear power plant some modifications on the Control Element Assembly shroud from the reference design have been made, Since the shroud is complex in geometry having an array of vertical round tubes and webs in a square grid pattern, and being tied down by preloaded tie rods into position, it is planned to perform a vibration measurement program consisting of both experimental and analytical modal studies upon that component. The shroud modal testing was performed on the low frequency global survey to measure the first several modes. The analysis using the finite element model was also performed for the as-tested conditions. The natural frequencies and mode shapes from both test and analysis have been acquired and compared to be in good agreement. It is concluded that finite element model generated is good enough to be used in the design for the dynamic response analysis under various loading conditions.

  • The analysis of linear static and free vibration problems of isotropic and laminated composite plates and shells is performed by the improved 9-node shell element with the new strain displacement relationship. In that relationship, the effect of new additional terms between the bending strain and displacement has been investigated in the warping problem. Natural co ordinate based strains, stresses and constitutive equations are used. The assumed natural strain method is used to alleviate both membrane and shear locking behavior from the element. The Lanczos method is employed in the calculation of the eigenvalues of laminated composite structures and the Gauss integration rule is adopted to evaluate the mass matrix. The numerical examples are compared with the analytical solutions to validate the current formulation and the results presented could be useful for the understanding of the behaviour of laminates under free vibration conditions.

  • This paper analyzes the continuous Galerkin method for the space-time discretization of wave equation. The method of space-time finite elements enables the simple solution than the usual finite element analysis with discretization in space only. We present a discretization technique in which finite element approximations are used in time and space simultaneously for a relatively large time period called a time slab. The weighted residual process is used to formulate a finite element method for a space-time domain. Instability is caused by a too large time step in successive time steps. A stability problem is described and some investigations for chosen types of rectangular space-time finite elements are carried out. Some numerical examples prove the efficiency of the described method under determined limitations.

  • In the design of tall building system, the wind loading can be more dominant factor than earthquake loading, and thus, it is important to check the stability and human comfort against wind. Experimental wind tunnel test is usually performed to predict wind behavior of a tall building, however, the test is not cost-effective in the preliminary stage for various structural models of tall building systems. In this regard, the study is focused on the numerical wind analysis of the tall building with and without tuned mass dampers based on the three dimensional model of wind loads and building behavior. As a numerical result, an asymmetrical 102-story tall building is presented to show the results of root mean squares of build responses with and without tuned mass dampers.

  • Some network equipments made in Korea were exposed to severe earthquake in Japan several years ago. More than a hundred slim base transfer network stations had been seized with the severe earthquake at Nigata and it was reported that less than fifteen sets showed blackout by interruption of electricity, not by the structural failure. The purpose of this paper is to check the structural safety of the network equipments by performing table test, and the static and dynamic finite element analysis. For the dynamic test, the station weighing 200 kg was subjected to the Zone 3 earthquake loading of GR-63-CORE on the shaking table to obtain the dynamic responses to compare with the analysis results. It is shown that the FE analysis results are a little bit larger than that of the experimental values. And the sensitivity analysis and optimization for the natural frequency is performed and it is found that the first natural frequency is sensitive to small design change as shown in the results. And the dynamic response of optimized design is less than the original design.

  • Two perforated plates (a square plate and a rectangular plate having an aspect ratio 1.57(L/sub x/=11, L/sub y/=7)) are taken as analysis examples. Each of these plates is given some changes in the boundary conditions. The size of cutouts as well as their locations are also changed in order to examine the variation of two eigenvalues corresponding to the fundamental mode. The relationship between two eigenvalues is established by changing the magnitude of edge thrust.

  • The Control Element Assembly(CEA) shroud is one of the most important components in the reactor vessel internals for the nuclear power plant. Because of the severe modification from its original design the structural integrity of this component has been questioned. In an attempt to resolve this question, the response of the CEA shroud to a random loading in the actual operating condition is calculated analytically and experimentally and compared to the code allowables to show that it is structurally adequate and acceptable for the long term operation.
