Parallel computing method is widely used in the computational fluid dynamics for efficient numerical analysis. Nowadays, low cost Linux cluster computers substitute for traditional supercomputers with parallel computing shcemes. The performance of nemerical solvers on an Linux cluster computer is highly dependent not on the performance of processors but on the performance of network devices in the cluster system. In this paper, we investigated the effects of the network devices such as Myrinet2000, gigabit ethernet, and fast ethernet on the performance of the cluster system by using some benchmark programs such as Netpipe, LINPACK, NAS NPB, and MPINS2D Navier-Stokes solvers. Finally, upon this investigation, we will suggest the method for building high performance low cost Linux cluster system in the computational fluid dynamics analysis.

Surrogate models have been used for the rapid estimation of six-DOF aerodynamic coefficients in the context of the design and control of a missile. For this end, we may generate highly accurate surrogate models with a multitude of aerodynamic data obtained from wind tunnel tests (WTTs); however, this approach is time-consuming and expensive. Thus, we aim to swiftly predict aerodynamic coefficients via co-Kriging using a few WTT data along with plenty of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) data. To demonstrate the excellence of co-Kriging models based on both WTT and CFD data, we first generated two surrogate models: co-Kriging models with CFD data and Kriging models without the CFD data. Afterwards, we carried out numerical validation and examined predictive trends to compare the two different surrogate models. As a result, we found that the co-Kriging models produced more accurate aerodynamic coefficients than the Kriging models thanks to the assistance of CFD data.
Automobile underhood thermal and airflow simulation h α s been performed by using a commercial CFD program, FLUENT. To implement the radiation heat transfer effect to the underhood thermal and flow field, Discrete Ordinates Method(DOM) was used. The cooling fan was modeled by using the Multiple Reference Frame(MRF) technique. For the implementation of the heat exchangers, such as radiator and condenser, which are located in the front side of vehicle, the effectiveness-NTU model was used. The pressure drop throughout the heat exchangers was modeled as Porous media. For the validation of the current computational method, the coolant temperature at the inlet port of the radiator was compared with experimental data, and less than 3% error was observed. Finally, the composed model was used for the cooling fan spec determination process in the development of a new vehicle, and the results showed that the current CFD method could be successfully applied to the vehicle development process.
In this paper, the authors test various open codes and commercial codes based on CFD technology on the wind field around the complex terrain, which is a very important transport physics in the event of forrest fire. To study the physical mechanism inside the transition from surface fire to crown fire, the wake flow behind a parallel array of trees is studied numerically to show the flow separation in the turbulent boundary layer. Two sites near to Kunsan National University are chosen for the measurement of real wind field, and obtained data are compared with those from various computational codes such as Wind-Ninja, NIST-FDS, ANSYS-CFX, and ANSYS-FlUENT, etc. Through this research, feasibility and accuracy of the present CFD codes are investigated quantitatively, compared with the measured data with AWS.
The valve used in nuclear power plant must be qualified but the limitation of the test facility leads to use the numerical analysis. The flow coefficient is calculated with the consideration of the pressure, velocity and geometry. And the flow coefficient is the important physical property which is prepared using experiment or analysis by valve manufacturer. In this study, the analysis model was made according to ISA 75.02.01 and the mass flow rate and pressure drop ratio was calculated. The model of the expansion factor was applied to the simulation result and the pressure drop ratio at the start of the choked flow in the valve was found. With the simulation result, the consideration was performed that the expansion factor is the important physical property to the system engineer in addition to the flow coefficient.
A Prototype Gen-IV Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor which is one of the $4^{th}$ generation nuclear reactors is in development by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The reactor is composed of four main fluid systems which are categorized by its functions, i.e., Primary Heat Transport System, Intermediate Heat Transport System, Decay Heat Removal System and Sodium-Water Reaction Pressure Relief System. The coolant of the reactor is liquid sodium and sodium-to-sodium heat exchangers are installed at the interfaces between two fluid systems, Intermediate Heat Exchangers between the Primary Heat Transport System and the Intermediate Heat Transport System and Decay Heat Exchangers between the Primary Heat Transport System and the Decay Heat Removal System. For the design and performance analysis of the Intermediate Heat Exchanger and the Decay Heat Exchanger, a computer code was written during previous step of research. In this work, the computer code named "SHXSA" has been validated preliminarily by computational fluid dynamics simulations.
We conducted a multi-stage optimization to secure the desired performance of a centrifugal fan for home appliance in an early stage of product development. In optimization, the static pressure at the outlet of the fan is chosen as an objective function that is to be maximized, providing the required flow rate at the operating point of the fan. The optimization procedure begins with parameters for an initial baseline fan design. The baseline design is optimized by using a commercial optimization package. Accordingly, the corresponding blade models with a set of geometrical parameters are generated. Flow through a fan is simulated by solving the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. A multi-stage optimization scheme is employed to determine the family of optimum values for the parameters, leading to the pressure increase at the outlet of the fan. To validate the numerically obtained optimal design parameters, we fabricated the three types of fans using rapid prototyping and assessed the performance using a fan tester. Experimental results show that the design parameters at each stage satisfy the goal of optimization. The multi-stage optimization process turned out to be a useful tool in the development of a centrifugal fan.
This article described that a high Reynolds number version of a turbulence model was modified by using drag reduction to analyze the turbulent flows of non-Newtonian fluid with visco-elastic viscosity and it was applied hemodynamics which was representative of visco-elastic fluid. The turbulence characteristics of visco-elastic fluid was expanded viscous sublayer region and buffer layer region by drag reduction phenomenon and also Newtonian turbulence models does not predict because viscosity was related with shear rate of fluid flow. Hence numerical simulation using a modified turbulence model was conducted under the same conditions that were applied to obtain the experiment results and previous turbulence models and then the numerical investigation of turbulent blood flow in the stenosed artery bifurcation under periodic acceleration of the human body.
The importance of shear thinning non-Newtonian blood rheology on the hemodynamic characteristics of idealized cerebral saccular aneurysms were investigated by carrying out CFD simulations assuming two different non-Newtonian rheology models (Carreau and Ballyk models). To explore effects of vessel curvature, a straight and a curved vessel geometry were considered. The wall shear stress(WSS), relative residence time(RRT) and velocity distribution were compared at the different phases of cardiac cycle. As expected, blood entered the aneurysm at the distal neck and created large vortex in both aneurysms, but with higher momentum on the curved vessel. Hemodynamic characteristics such as WSS, and RRT exhibited only minor effects by choice of different rheological models although Ballyk model produced relatively higher effects. We conclude that the assumption of Newtonian fluid is reasonable for studies aimed at quantifying the hemodynamic characteristics, in particular, WSS-based parameters, considering the current accuracy level of medical image of cerebral aneurysm.
