  • An interactive computer program to design a mold cavity with the proper rigging system has been developed. In addition to the pattern and the risers generated in part 1 of this work, the various components of the gating system are generated in complete three dimensional models by a rational approach. Then they are laid interactively by the user, and united together with the pattern and the risers to result in the three dimensional model of the mold assembly. Finally, the vents and the mold box are constructed following the user's interactive specification and then the mold cavity is completed in a three dimensional geometric model by subtraction the mold assembly and the vents from the mold box. The three dimensional model of a mold cavity is useful for many related applications such as the solidification simulation for mold evaluation and the NC tool path generation for mold production.

  • An interactive computer program has been developed to design a pattern and risers for the production of castings of high quality. In our system, the user models the shape of a final product by using the system's modeling capability, a pattern is generated in a three dimensional model by eliminating the holes and adding shrinkage allowances and drafts, the proper riser is created automatically, and they are united together to yield the three dimensional model of the portion of a mold assembly. The mold can be completed after the runners and the gating systems are designed, modeled, and united, which will be described in part 2 of this work. The unique feature of this work is a realization of an automatic design of the pattern and risers by integrating the modeling capabilities and the design equations used in the real practice.

  • A computer-aided design system of involute cylindrical gears(spur and helical gears) for power transmission is developed, in which the volume of a gear unit is minimized with satisfying various design constraints. As the design constraints, bending strength and pitting resistance of AGMA 218.01, scoring of Dudley's flash temperature, contact ratio, and involute interference of pinion are considered and effective factors for strength calculation(life, reliability, hardness ratio, load distribution, velocity, etc.) are also included. This complicated nonlinear optimization problem is solved by using ALM(Augmented-Lagrange-Multiplier) method with self scaling BFGS(Broydon-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno) method employed for unconstrained optimization programming. This design method can be easily applied to designing power transmission gear unit in the machines of various kinds. It is expected for the proposed method to be a contribution for an automated design of gear unit towards weight minimization, miniaturization and high strength of gear unit.

  • The effort of this paper is to develop a methodology of computer aided design and manufacture of spatial cams. The integrated CAD/CAM systems for spatial cams are developed to enable manufacturer to design and machine them readily. The contour of spatial cams can be obtained by applying envelope theory to the cam/follower motion. The mathematical cam contour is evaluated at some increment to generate the numerical data for the CNC programming. Incremental generation of points along a cam contour can be accomplished in consideration with the specified tolerance. The computerized procedure is described in detail with accompanying examples.

  • A technique is developed which allows a designer to interactively create an assembly of components by specifying mating contions between the individual components. Once establishing the relationships between components via the mating conditions, each component's location and orientation in the final assembly is computed. The joint information for a kinematic and dynamic analysis can be derived from the mating conditions, therefore this work may be extended to incorporate this analysis. Thorugh this development it will no longer be necessary for a designer to specify cumbersome and error prone transformation matrices in order to create an assembly. The designer also will be able to perform a kinematic or a dynamic analysis directly from an assembly model if the joint information can be automatically derived.

  • This paper presents an optimal design method for structure-borne durability of a vehicle body structure. Structure-borne durability design requires a new design that can increase fatigue lives of critical areas in a structure and must prohibit transition phenomenon of critical areas that results from modification of the structure at the same time. Therefore, the optimization problem fur structure-borne durability design are consists of an objective function and design constraints of 2 types; type 1-constraint that increases fatigue lives of the critical areas to the required design limits and type 2-constraint that prohibits transition phenomenon of critical areas. The durability design problem is generally dynamic because a designer must consider the dynamic behavior such as fatigue analyses according to the structure modification during the optimal design process. This design scheme, however, requires such high computational cost that the design method cannot be applicable. For the purpose of efficiency of the durability design, we presents a method which carry out the equivalent static design problem instead of the dynamic one. In the proposed method, dynamic design constraints for fatigue life, are replaced to the equivalent static design constraints for stress/strain coefficients. The equivalent static design constraints are computed from static or eigen-value analyses. We carry out an optimal design for structure-borne durability of the newly developed bus and verify the effectiveness of the proposed method by examination of the result.

  • A cycloid reducer is one of the rotational velocity reduction equipments of machinery. It has advantages of the higher reduction ratio, the higher accuracy, the easier adjustment of transmission ratio and the smaller workspace than other kinds of reducer. A cycloidal plate gear is a main part of the cycloid reducer. Its tooth shape is peculiar because of gearing with the roller gear that has the several rollers on the circular line. And then it can be designed to contact all teeth to rollers. So, the cycloid reducer has the good characteristics in the dynamic properties and the zero-backlash in the contact motion. It can be used in robots, high-precision machines and high capacity machinery. This paper proposes a new approach for the shape design of the cycloidal plate gear and presents a Computer-Aided-Design program developed by the proposed method. The first part of this paper defines the two types of the cycloid reducers and explains their mechanisms. The second part defines the instant velocity centers for each type of the cycloid reducers and calculates the contact angles and the contact points by using te geometric relationships and the kinematical properties of the reducers. The third part generates the full shape of the cycloidal plate gear by the coordinate transformation technique. Finally, this paper presents two examples for the shape design of the cycloidal plate gear in order to prove the theory of the proposed method in this paper and the accuracy of the \"CycloGear Designer\".

  • The ability to predict radar return from flying vehicles becomes a critical technology issue in the development of stealth configurations. Toward developing a CEM code based on Maxwell's equations for analysis of RCS reduction schemes, an explicit upwind scheme suitable for multidisciplinary design is presented. The DFFT algorithm is utilized to convert the time-domain field values to the frequency-domain. A Green's function based on near field-to-far field transformation is also employed to calculate the bistatic RCS. To verify the numerical calculation the two-dimensional field around a perfectly conducting cylinder is considered. Finally results are obtained for the scattering electromagnetic field around an airfoil in order to illustrate the feasibility of applying CFD based methods to CEM.
