  • During extreme ionospheric storms, anomalous ionospheric delays and gradients could cause potential integrity threats to users of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) augmentation systems. GNSS augmentation ground facilities must monitor these ionospheric anomalies defined by a threat model and alarm the users of safely-of-life applications within time-to-alerts. Because the ionospheric anomaly threat model is developed using data collected from GNSS reference stations, the use of poor-quality data can degrade the performance of the threat model. As the total number of stations increases, the number of station with poor GNSS data quality also increases. This paper analyzes the quality of data collected from Korean GPS reference stations using comprehensive GNSS data quality check algorithms. The results show that the range of good and poor qualities varies noticeably for each quality parameter. Especially erroneous ionospheric delay and gradients estimates are produced due to poor quality data. The results obtained in this study should be a basis for determining GPS data quality criteria in the development of ionospheric threat models.

  • The position and time errors of a conventional L1-band GPS receiver (1575.42MHz) are known to be about 100 m and 70 ns, respectively. These errors are mainly due to the propagation delay of GPS satellite signals through ionosphere. Various L1/L2 dual-band GPS receivers are normally used to compensate for those position and time errors by detecting an accurate propagation delay. These receivers detect the propagation delay difference between the L1 and L2 signals based on the fact that the propagation delay through ionosphere is dependent on frequency and, from which, calculate an accurate propagation delay of the GPS signals through ionosphere. In this paper, we analyzed the architecture of a L1/L2 dual-band CPS receiver by high-level simulations with Synopsys's COSSAP Tool.

  • Energy which is released by a huge earthquake can reach the ionosphere and induce disturbances. Those disturbances can detected by analyzing the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) satellite's signal. For detecting those disturbances, band-pass filter is generally used. Therefore, it is important to select proper pass band that can contain disturbance's frequency. In this paper, we analyzed a frequency of the ionospheric disturbances which are induced by earthquake by using GNSS signal. For analyzing seismogenic ionospheric disturbances, we calculated a geometry free combination of carrier phase to obtain a ionospheric delay. After that, the fast Fourier transform was applied to the 1 mHz high-passed ionospheric delay. As a result of analyzing disturbances, the frequency band of earlier disturbances was 4.5 mHz~11mHz and the representative frequency was 5.7 mHz. The frequency band of subsequent disturbances was 6 mHz~10 mHz and the representative frequency was 7.3 mHz.

  • The ionospheric delay is the largest error source in GPS positioning after the SA effect has been turned off in May, 2000. In this study, we used 44 permanent GPS stations being operated by National Geographic Information Institute (NGII) to estimate Total Electron Content (TEC) based on pseudorange measurements phase-leveled by a linear combination with carrier phases. The Differential Code Bias (DCB) of GPS satellites and receivers was estimated and applied for an accurate estimation of the TEC. To validate our estimates of DCB, changes of TEC values after DCB application were investigated. As a result, the RMS error went down by about an order of magnitude; from 35~45 to 3~4 TECU. After the DCB correction, ionospheric TEC maps were produced at a spatial resolution of $1^{\circ}{\times}1^{\circ}$. To analyze the effect of the number of sites used for map generation on the accuracy of TEC values, we tried 10, 20, 30, and 44 stations and the RMS error was computed with the Global Ionosphere Map as the truth. While the RMS error was 5.3 TECU when 10 sites are used, the error reduced to 3.9 TECU for the case of 44 stations.

  • The Kalman filter has been widely used in the kinematic GPS positioning due to its flexibility and efficiency in computational points of view. At the same time, the relative positioning technique also provided the high precision positioning results by removing the systematic errors in the measurements significantly. However, the positioning quality may be degraded following to longer in baseline length. For this case, it is required that the remaining atmospheric effects, such as double-difference ionospheric delay and zenith wet delay, should be properly modeled by examining the characteristics of the stochastic processes. In general, atmospheric effects are estimated with the assumption of random walk, or the first-order Gauss-Markov stochastic process, which requires the precise modeling on the corresponding process noises. Therefore, we determined and provided the parameters for modelling the process noises for atmospheric effects. The auto-correlation functions are empirically determined at first, and then the parameters are extracted from the empirical auto-correlation function. In fact, the test results can be either applied directly, or used as guidance values for the modeling of process noises in the kinematic GPS positioning.

  • The coverage area of GNSS regional ionospheric correction model is mainly determined by the disribution of GNSS ground monitoring stations. Outside the coverage area, GNSS users may receive ionospheric correction signals but the correction does not contain valid correction information. Extrapolation of the correction information can extend the coverage area to some extent. Three interpolation methods, Kriging, biharmonic spline and cubic spline, are tested to evaluate the extrapolation accuracy of the ionospheric delay corrections outside the correction coverage area. IGS (International GNSS Service) ionosphere map data is used to simulate the corrections and to compute the extrapolation error statistics. Among the three methods, biharmonic method yields the best accuracy. The estimation error has a high value during Spring and Fall. The error has a high value in South and East sides and has a low value in North side.

  • GPS radio occultation is a remote sensing technique probing atmospheric properties based on the fact that GPS signal is refracted and delayed by atmosphere. The FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC mission jointly developed by the USA and Taiwan is providing about 2500 occultation soundings a day on the near real-time basis. The Korean KOMPSAT-5/AOPOD system is preparing to launch for monitoring troposphere and ionosphere using a dual frequency GPS receiver and the antenna for occultation data acquisition. In this paper, we examine the methods for signal processing and the geometry analysis for GPS radio occultation, and look into the retrieval techniques for the temperature and humidity of troposphere and the electron density and scintillation of ionosphere. Using these atmospheric properties, we aim to derive the strategies for applying GPS radio occultation to space weather, for example, ionospheric TEC(total electron content) analysis for earthquake monitoring and the Open API(application programming interface) development for more effective data service.
