Increase in oil prices and building energy consumption has been a great burden for Korea which has significant energy dependence on foreign energy sources. In this context, reduction of building energy consumption, which comprises 40% of total energy consumption, is a very important issue. This research therefore empirically analyzed a hospital "P" that implemented ICT-based energy consumption and cost reduction initiative. The hospital first replaced existing water absorber for heating/cooling air and boiler for heating water with water heat storage heat pump system. This was accompanied by subscribing to different electricity price plans to maximize cost reduction. Secondly, the hospital additionally applied ICT-based optimized control algorithm that considers surrounding factors (external temperature, changes in energy demand). The analysis of these mechanisms indicate that the ICT-based energy consumption and cost reduction initiative for hospitals can reduce energy consumption by 53.6% with replacement of low-efficiency equipment and additionally by 18.2% with optimized control algorithm. The mechanisms will provide energy consumption reduction opportunities for other hospitals and buildings with high energy consumption.

The energy savings and $CO_2$ emission reductions obtainable from the situation that the Smart Grid system (SGs) is assumed to be applied in Korea up to 2030 is quantitatively analyzed with many reported data. For calculation, SGs is divided into five sectors such as Smart Transmission and Distribution (ST&D), Smart Consumer (SC), Smart Electricity Service (SES), Smart Renewable Energy (SRE) and Smart Transportation (ST). Total annual energy savings in 2030 is estimated to be approximately 103,121 GWh and this is 13.1% of total electricity consumption outlook. Based on this value, total amount of reducible $CO_2$ emissions is calculated to 55.38 million $tCO_2$, which is 17.6% of total nation's GHG reduction target. Although the contribution of energy saving due to SGs to total electricity consumption increases as years go by, that of $CO_2$ emission reduction gradually decreases. This might be because that coal fired based power generation is planned to be sharply increased and the rate of $CO_2$ emission reduction scheduled by nation is very fast. The contributable portion of five each sector to total $CO_2$ emission reductions in 2030 is estimated to be 44.37% for SC, 29.16% for SRE, 20.12% for SES, 5.11% for ST&D, and 1.24% for ST.

In this paper, we have presented a basic idea of a power shut-off client based on NFC (near field communication). For the first step of the system design, we have shown the conceptual diagrams of the hardware configuration and the software logic flow. This system can be applied to the integrated power control in home, office, school, factory, and apartment. The standby power shut-off system will bring saving in electrical energy and cost.

This paper dealt with the economic analysis on the application of shipboard LED (Light Emitting Diode) luminaires to replace incandescent and fluorescent lamps, which account for over 80 % of light source on a training or naval vessel. The rates of savings achieved in the power consumption, initial investment, maintenance cost, and fuel cost were analyzed. The break-even points and the $CO_2$ emissions were also calculated. For the training vessel, the initial investment was increased by 3.8 times, while the maintenance cost over five years was reduced by 51 %. When 40 %, 50 %, and 60 % of luminaires were turned on, the calculated break-even points were 11 months, 9 months, and 7 months, respectively. On the other hand, the initial investment was increased by 3.5 times while the maintenance cost over five years was saved by 55 % for the naval vessel. The break-even points were calculated as 15 months, 12 months, and 10 months, respectively. Moreover, the $CO_2$ emissions of the training and the naval vessels were reduced by 69 % and 65 %, respectively. From the results, it was revealed that the maintenance cost can be reduced by more than 50 %, and that the power consumption, fuel cost, and $CO_2$ emissions can be reduced by more than 60 % if LED luminaires are used on two types of vessels.

Recently, the circuits of fluorescent light-switches are separated for window-light, middle-lights, or corridor-light, etc in most offices and classrooms in this country. Although it is clean and shiny - more than standard intensity of illumination, it is common that fluorescent lights on the side of window are lighted. In this case, we can use a fluorescent light with a sensor, which is turned on and off automatically according to the amount of sunlight. I think that this plan can save energy, reduce the budget, and increase the effect of education. and so I studied on this plan.

Energy cost has been increasing rapidly to comply with environmental regulations worldwide and the manufacturing industry who consumes more than half of the total energy needs to improve their cost competitiveness considering environmental costs. Machine tools are essential elements in manufacturing industry and efforts have been made recently to increase their energy efficiency mainly by German and Japanese machine tool builders. In this paper, trends in energy saving technology are described on the hardware and software sides of peripheral equipment of machine tools. In addition, the power consumption of a machining center is measured and analyzed to develop a software-based standby strategy for energy saving with peripheral equipment of machine tools.

Set-top Box which receives broadcasting signal and delivers it to display device such as TV usually doesn't have low-power mode, standby power mode. On the other side, most consumer electronics support standby power mode. The main reasons come from technical barriers and operational stability. Set-top box normally consumes 80~90% power of active mode even though turning off. This is much higher compared to other consumer electronics which consume less than 1W in standby power mode. However, most developed countries including Korea are enforcing the regulations which enhance energy efficiency of set-top box. This paper describes design and development of low-power set-top box. Key technologies are SoC supporting low-power mode, system hardware and software operating in separated power mode, and middleware managing the power with broadcasting system. Finally, we show energy saving expectation through development and proliferation.
