  • At supercritical pressure, the physical properties of fluid change substantially and the heat transfer at a temperature similar to the critical or pseudo-critical temperature improves considerably; however, the heat transfer may deteriorate due to a sudden increase in the wall temperature at a certain condition of a mass and heat flux. In this study, the heat transfer rates in $CO_2$ flowing vertically upward and downward in a circular tube with a diameter of 4.57 mm under various conditions were calculated by measuring the temperature of the outer wall of the tube. The published heat transfer correlations were analyzed by comparing their prediction values with 7,250 experimental data. By introducing a buoyancy parameter, a heat transfer correlation, which could be applied only to a normal heat transfer regime, was extended such that it can be applied to regime of heat transfer deterioration. The published criteria for heat transfer deterioration were evaluated against the conditions obtained from the experiment in this study.

  • A rubber diaphragm is a critical element of accumulators. The material of a diaphragm is nitrile rubber so as to recover and adjust the large deformation under external pressure fluctuation. The performance of accumulators is influenced by the deformation behaviors of the diaphragm. A large deformation behavior of the diaphragm has been investigated using the commercial finite element program MARC K7.1. The several elastic moduli have been used in linear analysis and Ogden's coefficients have been used in non-linear analysis. As a result, it has been shown that the deformation behavior with a elastic modulus of $0.3 kg/mm^2$ is similar to the behavior of non-linear analysis. And, the modified diaphragm shape to reduce the stress concentration has been proposed.

  • This study presents a prediction methodology of transport properties using the methane-based TRAPP (m-TRAPP) method in a wide range of temperature and pressure conditions including both subcritical and supercritical regions, in order to obtain thermo-physical properties for hydrocarbon aviation fuels and their products resulting from endothermic reactions. The viscosity and thermal conductivity are predicted in the temperature range from 300 to 1000 K and the pressure from 0.1 to 5.0 MPa, which includes all of the liquid, gas, and the supercitical regions of representative hydrocarbon fuels. The predicted values are compared with those data obtained from the NIST database. It was demonstrated that the m-TRAPP method can give reasonable predictions of both viscosity and thermal conductivity in the wide range of temperature and pressure conditions studied in this paper. However, there still exists large discrepancy between the current data and established values by NIST, especially for the liquid phase. Compared to the thermal conductivity predictions, the calculated viscosities are in better agreement with the NIST database. In order to consider a wide range of conditions, it is suggested to select an appropriate method through further comparison with another improved prediction methodologies of transport properties.

  • EU-APR1400, the Korean nuclear reactor design for European market adopts a so-called core catcher for ex-vessel molten corium retention and cooling as a severe-accident mitigation system. Sacrificial material, which controls melt properties and modifies melt conditions favorable for corium cooling and retention, is usually employed to protect core catcher body from molten corium. Since molten corium can be ejected through a breach of a reactor pressure vessel and impinged on the sacrificial material with enhanced heat transfer at a severe accident, it is very important to predict ablation rate of sacrificial material due to corium jet impingement accurately for core catcher design. In this paper, sacrificial-material ablation model based on boundary layer theory is suggested and compared with the experimental results by KAERI.

  • To date, research on heavy floor impact noise has mainly been conducted. The reason is that in the case of lightweight floor impact noise, sufficient performance could be secured with only the floating floor structure and floor finishing materials. In the case of heavy floor impact noise in a floating floor structure, the reduction performance can be predicted to some extent by measuring the dynamic elasticity of the floor cushioning material. However, with the recent introduction of the post-measurement system, various floor structures are being developed. In particular, many non-floating floor structures that do not use cushioning materials are being developed. In floor structures where cushioning materials are not used, the finishing material will have a significant impact on lightweight floor impact noise. However, research on floor finishing materials is currently lacking. In this study, as a basic research on the development of various floor finishing materials for effective reduction of lightweight floor impact noise, various materials used as floor finishing materials for apartment complexes were selected, the sound insulation performance of lightweight floor impact noise was measured in an actual laboratory, and vibration characteristics were identified through simple experiments. The purpose was to confirm the predictability of light floor impact noise.

  • Low resolution spectral modeling of water vapor is carried out by applying the weighted-sum-of-gray-gases model (WSGGM) to a narrow band. For a given narrow band, focus is placed on proper modeling of gray gas absorption coefficients vs. temeprature relation used for any solution methods for the Radiative Transfer Equation(RTE). Comparison between the modeled emissivity and the "true" emissivity obtained from a high temperatue statistical narrow band parameters is made ofr the total spectrum as well as for a few typical narrow bands. Application of the model to nonuniform gas layers is also made. Low resolution spectral intensities at the boundary are obtained for uniform, parabolic and boundary layer type temeprature profiles using the obtained for uniform, parabolic and boundary layer type temperature profiles using the obtained WSGGM's with 9 gray gases. The results are compared with the narrow band spectral intensities as obtained by a narrow band model-based code with the Curtis-Godson approximation. Good agreement is found between them. Local heat source strength and total wall heat flux are also compared for the cases of Kim et al, which again gives promising agreement.

  • The GR51PP(MWCO 50,000) and GR40PP(MWCO 100,000) membranes manufactured by DDS were used in ultrafiltration of dextran(Mw. : 500,000) solution in flat plate ultrafiltration cell filled with various types of turbulence promoters. The flux improvement by using turbulence promoter was higher in laminar flow region than in turbulent flow region. The maximum improvements of permeate flux were foud as 112% and 50% I laminar flow region and turbulent flow region, respectively. Also, the solute rejection of the ultrafiltration membrane was improved by turbulence promoters and its effect was significant in the high transmembrane pressure and laminar flow region. The smaller the spacer mesh size was used, the higher the flux improved, but the pressure drop in ultrafiltration cell also increased. In laminar flow region, pressure drop by the spacer was negligible, but in turbulent flow region it changed significantly depending upon the mesh size of the spacer and therefore, its mesh size must be baken into account in the design of the process. The predicted results of the modified mass transfer correlation had better agreement with experimental results than those of unmodified one, The modified mass transfer correlations for laminar and turbulent flow region are shown as follow. $N_{sh}=0.151(N_{Re})^{0.199}(N_{Sc})^{0.22}(N_{Scm})^{0.197}\;(625 $N_{sh}=0.0165(N_{Re})^{0.428}(N_{Sc})^{0.33}(N_{Scm})^{0.223}\;(5015

  • Vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is an energy conversion device in which charging and discharging are alternatively carried out by oxidation and reduction reactions of vanadium ions with different oxidation states. VRFB consists of electrolyte, electrode, ion-exchange membrane, etc. The role of ion-exchange membranes in VRFB separates anolyte and catholyte and provides a high conductivity to hydrogen ions. Recently much attention has been devoted to develop ideal ion-exchange membranes for VRFB. A number of developed ion-exchange membranes should be evaluated to find out ideal ion-exchange membranes for VRFB. Long-term durability test is a crucial characterization of ion-exchange membranes for commercialization, but is very time-consuming. In this study, the life time prediction protocol of ion-exchange membranes in VRFB cell tests was developed through short-term single cell performance evaluation (real total operation time, 87.5 hrs) at three different current densities. We confirmed a decrease in test time up to 96.2% of real durability tests (expected total operation time, 2,296 hrs) and 5~6% of relative error discrepancy between the predicted and the real life time in a unit cell.

  • The single carbon fiber tensile test was performed with electrical resistance measurement. Tensile property of single carbon fiber which accompanied by the relationship between the electric resistance and the strain was investigated. Since the collected data showed a linear relationship between them, the coefficient of fiber slip ratio (FSR) was obtained by computation. The fragmentation specimen (FS) was tested under tensile loading, and the single carbon fiber broke first due to the stress transferring form matrix to reinforcing fiber. The stress distribution of carbon fiber could be observed via the electrical resistance change. Slipping between carbon fiber and matrix was predicted based on the fragmentation test results, and the FSR was used to evaluate interfacial adhesion comparatively. The large FSR indicated poor interfacial bonding. Work of adhesion between carbon fiber and matrix was measured to verify the FSR method, and two results exhibited a consistent conclusion.

  • Numerical models simulating the process of NAPL from contaminated soil or groundwater through steam injection can be a useful tool for designing and evaluating the cleanup strategy under various field conditions. One and two dimensional numerical analyses were conducted based on the governing equations describing the NAPL removal as a non-isothermal, multi-phase and multi component process. Relatively good agreements were obtained between the numerical results and the observations from one-dimensional laboratory experiment, except some discrepancy due to experimental difficulties. Simulation effectively identified the steam displacement process of xylene floating on the water table and TCE sinking on the aquifer bottom in a two-dimensional analysis. Overall, simulation models have a high potential in the design/appraisal of a system for field application of the technique as well as in the examination of complex processes such as vaporization which is hard to identify experimentally.
