The objective of this study is to analyze the characteristics of flow and bed change at the wide, shallow confluence of the Geum river and Mihocheon, which has different bed slope, height, and sediment concentration condition between the main channel and tributary. RMA-2 and SED2D were used to simulate flow and bed changes at the site. Flow simulations showed that the overall flow velocity, shear layer and vortex generated at the left bank of the confluence increase as the discharge was increased. Sediment transport simulations indicated that because of the high inflow sediment concentration from Mihocheon, sediment concentration in the main river increases after the confluence, the high sediment concentration band was kept along the shear layer boundary and the left bed was aggraded after confluence.

Adiabatic shear bands have been observed in the serrated chip during high strain rate metal cutting process of medium carbon steel and titanium alloy. The recent microscopic observations have shown that dynamic recrystallization occurs in the narrow adiabatic shear bands. However the conventional flow stress models such as the Zerilli-Armstrong model and the Johnson-Cook model, in general, do not predict the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in the shear bands and the thermal softening effects accompanied by DRX. In the present study, a strain hardening and thermal softening model is proposed to predict the adiabatic shear localized chip formation. The finite element analysis (FEA) with this proposed flow stress model shows that the temperature of the shear band during cutting process rises above 0.5T$\sub$m/. The simulation shows that temperature rises to initiate dynamic recrystallization, dynamic recrystallization lowers the flow stress, and that adiabatic shear localized band and the serrated chip are formed. FEA is also used to predict and compare chip formations of two flow stress models in orthogonal metal cutting with AISI 1045. The predictions of the FEA agreed well with the experimental measurements.
The effect of the initial packing structure on the plasticity of amorphous alloys was investigated by tracing the structural evolution of the amorphous solid inside a shear band. According to the molecular dynamics simulations, the structural evolution of the amorphous solids inside the shear band was more abrupt in the alloy with a higher initial packing density. Such a difference in the structural evolution within the shear band observed from the amorphous alloys with different initial packing density is believed to cause different degrees of shear localization, providing an answer to the fundamental question of why amorphous alloys show different plasticity. We clarify the structural origin of the plasticity of bulk amorphous alloys by exploring the microstructural aspects in view of the structural disordering, disorder-induced softening, and shear localization using molecular dynamics simulations based on the recently developed MEAM (modified embedded atom method) potential.
Characteristics and complex structures in the northwest Nevada, U.S.A. are de-veloped due to relative tectonic movement of major tectonostratigraphic terranes. Theresearch area is composed of autochthonous rocks of both Early Triassic Koipato Group and Middle Triassic Star Peak Group, which is located in the Humboldt Range, northwest Nevada, U.S.A. The present research is focused on deformation history, related fabric development, and state of regional paleostress during the Jurassic to Late Cretaceous. The Triassic autochthonous rocks in the Humboldt Range, Nevada, U.S.A. display polyphase deformation due to E- to ESE-directed tectonic transport of the Fencemaker allochthon over autochthonous rocks of the Humboldt Range. Structures involving the Mesozoic foreland deformation are development of intense foliation, different styles of folds, minor thrusts, transposed layering, and strong mylonitization. These tectonic structures are mostly developed along the western flank of the Humboldt Range, and are reported as the first deformation of the Mesozoic foreland in the Humboldt Range, Nevada, U.S.A. Regional principal stress(${\sigma}_1$) is interpreted to be E to ESE between the Jurassic and Early Cretaceous on the basis of orientations of strongly developed $D_1$ structures. The deformation during the Middle to Late Cretaceous, is characterized by development of consistent N- to NNE-trending metamorphic quartz veins, and shear zones parallel to pre-existing $D_1$ foliation. Orientations of metamorphic quartz veins as well as other kinematic indicators are N to NNE and are interpreted as those of regional principal stress(${\sigma}_1$) during the Late Cretaceous. The sense of shear applied in the Humbololt Range is dextral and is caused by reactivation of early-formed $D_1$ structures. These results reflect counterclockwise rotation of regional principal paleostress in the Humboldt Range from the Jurassic to Late cretaceous. Finally, development of both shear band cleavage and S/C mylonitic fabrics indicates that the shear zones in the Humboldt Range reflect involvement of enhanced non-coaxial flow during bulk shortening in mylonitic formation.
Detailed mapping along the Keumwang fault reveals a complex history of multiple brittle reactivations following late Jurassic and early Cretaceous ductile shearing. The fault core consists of a 10~50 m thick fault gouge layer bounded by a 30~100 m thick damaged zone. The Pre-cambrian gneiss and Jurassic granite underwent at least six distinct stages of fault movements based on deformation environment, time and mechanism. Each stage characterized by fault kinematics and dynamics at different deformation environment. Stage 1 generated mylonite series along the Keumwang shear zone by sinistral ductile shearing during late Jurassic and early Cretaceous. Stage 2 was a mostly brittle event generating cataclasite series superimposed on the mylonite series of the Keumwang shear zone. The roundness of pophyroclastes and the amount of matrix increase from host rocks to ultracataclasite indicating stronger cataclastic flow toward the fault core. At stage 3, fault gouge layer superimposed on the cataclasite generated during stage 2 and the sedimentary basins (Umsung and Pungam) formed along the fault by sinistral strike-slip movement. Fragments of older cataclasite suspended in the fault gouge suggest extensive reworking of fault rocks at brittle deformation environments. At stage 4, systematic en-echelon folds, joints and faults were formed in the sedimentary basins by sinistral strike-slip reactivation of the Keumwang fault. Most of the shearing is accommodated by slip along foliations and on discrete shear surfaces, while shear deformation tends to be relatively uniformly distributed within the fault damage zone developed in the mudrocks in the sedimentary basins. Fine-grained andesitic rocks intruded during stage 4. Stage 5 dextral strike-slip activity produced shear planes and bands in the andesitic rocks. ESR(Electron Spin Resonance) dates of fault gouge show temporal clustering within active period and migrating along the strike of the Keumwang fault during the stage 6 at the Quaternary period.
In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate and improve the constructability and seismic performance of high strength R/C interior beam-column joints regions, with or without the shear reinforcement, using high ductile fiber-reinforced mortar. Six specimens of retrofitted the beam-column joint regions using high ductile fiber-reinforced mortar are constructed and tested for their retrofit performances. Specimens designed by retrofitting the interior beam-column joint regions (IJNS series) of existing reinforced concrete building showed a stable mode of failure and an increase in load-carrying capacity due to the enhancement of crack dispersion by fiber bridging from using new high ductile materials for retrofitting. Specimens of IJNS series, designed by the retrofitting of high ductile fiber-reinforced mortar in beam-column joint regions increased its maximum load carrying capacity by 96~102.8% and its energy dissipation capacity by 0.99~1.11 folds when compared to standard specimen of SIJC with a displacement ductility of 5.
In this study, seismic elastic wave and dynamic elastic modulus properties are investigated by down-hole seismic tests that were applied to the 11 gneiss area. The research results show that the realtionship between the two properties are $V_s=0.5589{\times}V_p$ in gneiss. The relationship between the two properties are separated into two groups. Group 1 is influenced mainly by the specific gravity of rock, but group 2 is influenced mainly by the joint aperture. As weathering progresses, group 1 clearly shows a decreasing tendency. In fresh and slightly weathered rock-mass, correlations between $V_p$ and dynamic elastic modulus is expressed in linear line but in moderately-highly weathered rock-mass, correlations between $V_p$ and dynamic elastic modulus is expressed curve as a quadratic function. Correlations between $V_s$ and dynamic elastic modulus are analyzed similar with a $V_p$ case.

Situations where support is provided solely in shaft resistance of drilled shafts are where the base of the drilled hole cannot be cleaned so that it is uncertain that any end bearing support will be developed. Alternatively, where sound bed rock underlies low strength overburden material, it may be possible to achieve the required support in end bearing on the rock only, and assume that no support is developed in the overburden. However, where the drilled shaft is drilled some depth into sound rock, a combination of side wall resistance and end bearing can be assumed. Both theoretical and field studies of the performance of rock socketed drilled shafts show that the major portion of applied load is usually carried in side wall resistance. Normal stress at the rock-concrete interface is induced by two mechanisms. First, application of a compressive load on the top of the pile results in elastic dilation of the concrete, and second, shear displacement at the rough surface of the drilled hole results in mechanical dilation of the interface. If the stiffness of the material surrounding the socket with respect to normal displacement is constant, then the normal stress will increase with increasing applied load, and there will be a corresponding increase in the shear strength. In this study, the numerical analyses are carried out to investigate the behavioral characteristics of side of rock socketed drilled shafts. The cause of non-linear head load-settlement relationship and failure mechanism at side are also investigated properly and the design charts are suggested and verified for the leading to greater efficiency and reliability in the pile design.

In this study, the cutting characteristics of bulk metallic glass (BMG) cut using a computer numerically controlled (CNC) lathe were investigated for different insert tool materials and cutting speeds. The surface roughness, chip morphology, cutting forces, and tool wear during turning of $Zr_{50}Cu_{40}Al_{10}$ BMG alloy were examined. Four kinds of tool materials were used to cut an 8-mm-diameter BMG. The examination of the surface roughnesses of the BMG specimens machined at each cutting speed showed that the surface roughness became better as the cutting speed increased, and the tool materials also influenced the surface roughness. The chip morphology investigations showed that the unoxidized BMG chips had serrated curled chips with adiabatic shear bands, while the oxidized chips exhibited local melting and tangling rather than the usual spiral-shaped chips. The cutting force induced during machining of the Zr-based BMG was the largest for the TiN-WC tool, followed by the polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tool. The cermet tool exerted the smallest cutting force.
