Present work deals three families of $SiO_2$ gelling agents which have been used to produce gel fuel based on Kerosene. Jet A-1 is chosen as fuel where power-law rheological model is used to confirm whether or not the gelification is achieved depending on the %wt of gellant. It was confirmed that the produced jelly-like substance have shear-thinning effect, and that its apparent viscosity increases as $SiO_2$ concentration increases. Compared to other gellants, gel with Aerosil(R) R972 fits most to the power-law model, while gels with Silica 230 and Silica 530 deviate from the power-law model. The rheological characteristics behaved differently depending on the mixing method(vortex mixing and manual mixing) when gellant concentration is increased.

The drag reduction is the phenomenon that occurs only when the shear stress from the wall of pipe is beyond the critical point. The drag reduction increase as the molecular weight, concentration of the polymer and Reynolds number increase, but it is limited by Virk's maximum drag reduction asymptote. Because of the strong shear force for the polymer on the turbulent flow, the molecular weight and the drag reduction do not decrease. Such mechanical degradation of the polymer occurs in all polymer solvent systems. This paper is to identify and develop high performance polymer additives for fluid transportations with the benefits of turbulent drag reduction. In addition, drag reduction in vertical flow by measuring the pressure drop and local void fraction on vertical-up flow of close system is evaluated.

This study investigates the rheological characteristics of $SiO_2$-Kerosene gel propellants with Aerosil(R) R972, Silica 230, Silica 530. Power-law rheological model is used to confirm whether or not gelification is achieved. It was found that the produced gel have shear-thinning effect, and that the viscosity of the gel propellants increases with increasing $SiO_2$ concentration. Among gellants used in this study, gel propellant with Aerosil(R) R972 fits most to the power law model as the shear rate increases. However, gels produced with Silica 230 and Silica 530 gellant deviate from the power law model when the shear rate regime is below 100 [1/s].

In this study, the rheological properties of nitromethane gel propellants on nano/micron sized gelling agent are investigated. Silicon dioxide is used as the gellant with 5 wt%, 6.5 wt% and 8 wt% concentration, respectively, where the measurements are conducted under steady-state shear flow conditions using a rotational rheometer. The nitromethane/silicon dioxide gel showed non-Newtonian flow behavior for the entire experimental shear rate ranges. The gel fuels with nano-sized gellant had a slightly higher viscosity than the gel fuels with micron-sized one for low shear rate range. Additionally, it was found that Herschel-Bulkley model can hardly describe the rheological behavior of nitromethane gel propellant, but the NM model(by Teipel and Forter-Barth) is better suited to explain the rheological behavior of nitromethane gel propellant.
The rheological properties of complex materials such as polymer melts show complicated non-Newtonian flow phenomena when they are subjected to shear flow. These flow properties are controlled by the characteristics of flow units and the interactions among the flow segments. The non-Newtonian flow curves of poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel were obtained in various concentrations and temperatures by using a cone-plate rheometer. By applying non-Newtonian flow equation to the flow curves for PVA hydrogel samples, the rheological parameters were obtained. The PVA hydrogel samples are shear thinning under increasing shear rate modes which result in thixotropic behavior.
The effect of vibration on the viscosity of a shear-thinning fluid was investigated with a newly designed pressure-scanning capillary viscometer. The viscometer was designed to measure non-Newtonian viscosity continuously over a range of shear rates at a time. Low frequency vibration was applied perpendicularly to the direction of the flow. The effect of the transversal vibration was investigated for both Newtonian fluids and non-Newtonian fluids. The experimental results showed that the vibration had no effect on the viscosity of the Newtonian fluids. However, the vibration caused a significant reduction of the shear-thinning fluid viscosity. The viscosity reduction was strongly dependent on both vibration frequency and shear rate. In addition, the viscosity reduction was affected by the amplitude of vibration, and, the bigger amplitude applied, the more viscosity reduction occurred.
The rheology of highly concentrated polymer bonded explosive (PBX) simulant was studied. An energy material, polyethylene plastomer (Exact$^{TM}$) having similar properties to poly(BAMO-AMMO) was selected as a binder. Dechlorane with similar properties to RDX (Research Department eXplosive) was chosen as a filler. Mixing behavior in a batch melt mixer was investigated. During mixing a large amount of heat of viscous dissipation was generated and a continuous decrease in torque was observed when the filler content was above 70 v%. It was believed due to wall slip phenomena. From the SEM images, the fillers were well dispersed and the effect of mixing condition affected slightly on the dispersion. Owing to distinct shear thinning behavior of the suspensions, measuring viscosity of highly filled suspensions was possible in a high shear rate capillary rheometer though it was impossible even in a low shear rate plateplate rheometer.

Aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) is a critical fire suppression agent used in combating hydrocarbon fires. This type of fire suppressant is highly effective due to its ability to form a protective film, dissipate heat, inhibit combustion, and utilize a blend of chemical substances to extinguish fires. While these properties offer significant advantages in responding to hydrocarbon fires, AFFF is distinct in its deployment as it is dispensed in the form of foam. Therefore, the rheological analysis of AFFF foam using a rheometer plays a crucial role in predicting the spray characteristics of AFFF for combating hydrocarbon fires, and this is closely associated with effective fire suppression. In this study, we conducted rheometer experiments to confirm the non-Newtonian behavior (shear-thinning) of AFFF foam and obtained data on the form's stability. These experimental data are expected to contribute to enhancing the efficiency of fire suppression systems utilizing AFFF.

The design of proper agitation system is requisite in biological waste treatment and energy generation plant, which is affected by viscosity, impeller types, and power consumption. In the present work, hydrogen fermentation of food waste was conducted at various operational pHs (4.5~6.5) and substrate concentrations (10~50 g Carbo. COD/L), and the viscosity of fermented broth was analyzed. The $H_2$ yield significantly varied from 0.51 to $1.77mol\;H_2/mol\;hexose_{added}$ depending on the pH value, where the highest performance was achieved at pH 5.5. The viscosity gradually dropped with shear rate increase, indicating a shear thinning property. With the disintegration of carbohydrate, the viscosity dropped after fermentation, but it did not change depending on the operational pH. At the same pH level, the $H_2$ yield was not affected much, ranging $1.40{\sim}1.86mol\;H_2/mol\;hexose_{added}$ at 10~50 g Carbo. COD/L. The zero viscosity and infinite viscosity of fermented broth increased with substrate concentrations, from 10.4 to $346.2mPa{\cdot}s$, and from 1.7 to $5.3mPa{\cdot}s$, respectively. There was little difference in the viscosity value of fermented broth at 10 and 20 g Carbo. COD/L. As a result of designing the agitation intensity based on the experimental results, it is expected that the agitation intensity can be reduced during hydrogen fermentation. The initial and final agitation intensity of 30 g Carbo. COD/L in hydrogen fermentation were 26.0 and 10.0 rpm, respectively. As fermentation went on, the viscosity gradually decreased, indicating that the power consumption for agitation of food waste can be reduced.
Vinyl acetate usually used in PVA resin preparation was converted to PVAc by bulk polymerization using AIBN as a initiator and PVA was synthesized by changing the concentration of NaOH added for saponification subsequently. As a result of estimating molecular weight using GPC, molecular weight increased as the NaOH concentration increased to 2.5 N, 5.0 N, 7.5 N and 10.0 N and polydispersity had similar values of 2.1~2.3, however, showed slightly decreasing tendency. In addition, PVA saponificated by 10.0 N-NaOH showed high syndiotacticity in observation of tacticity using NMR spectroscopy. From this fact, the degree of tacticity was predicted to be high and it was in good agreement with the tendency of polydispersity by GPC. Also, from the result of FT-IR spectroscopy, it might be known that hydrolysis was more promoted in the PVA with 10.0 N-NaOH than other NaOH concentration. Intrinsic viscosity measured using Ubbelohde viscometer, which increased as the concentration of NaOH added for saponification increased. The change of shear strength with the change of shear rate was investigated using Brookfield viscometer, in consequence, viscosity of PVA synthesized decreased as shear rate increased. PVA solution confirmed to show the shear thining behavior by Casson plot and PVA with 10.0 N-NaOH had the largest yield value. DSC measurement was performed to know the thermal properties of PVA. Tp had nearly constant value of 214$^{\circ}C$ in all cases except for adding 2.5 N-NaOH and $\Delta$H was increased as the concentration of NaOH increased. From this properties, it was concluded that the degree of hydrogen bonding was proportional to the added concentration of NaOH and the increase of the degree of hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction could affect the rheological and thermal properties of title compound.
