  • HWAW (Harmonic Wavelet Analysis of Wave) method, which is non-destructive method using body and surface waves, has the advantages of obtaining 2D subsurface imaging because it uses a short receiver spacing to obtain the $V_s$ profile of whole depth. Even though the reliability of HWAW method has already been verified by using the numerical simulation in the various layered models, it is very difficult to evaluate the reliability of HWAW in the field because the exact $V_s$ values of the experimental site are unknown. In this study, a model testing site where the material properties and layer information could be controlled was constructed to verify the reliability of HWAW method. The detailed geometry of the testing site was strictly measured by surveying, and 140 vertical and horizontal geophones were established at the boundary of each layer to evaluate the dynamic material properties. Using the interval travel times between the upper and lower geophones, the body wave velocities of each layer were 2 dimensionally obtained as reference data, and comparative study using HWAW method was performed. By comparing 2D Vs profile obtained by HWAW method to the reference data, the reliability of HWAW method was verified.

  • The present work reviews some mechanism explaining how thin layer can develop in the near coastal zone. The existence of thin layer was observed by physical research methods later than classical biological approaches. The Richardson number, which is a ratio between the stratification and shear stress is crucial factor determining the occurrence of thin layer. Micro-structure turbulence seems to affect the plankton behavior, in particular the encountering rate. Encountering rate affects significantly feeding, reproduction etc. and this fact was proved by the mechanical simulation methods. Recently the Gyrotaxis was introduced to explain how thin layer occurs in the mixing layer. Such physical approaches to explain ecological problem will be prominent methods for marine ecological research area.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical usefulness of 4 self etching primers by measuring the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets and examining the failure pattern of bracket-tooth interfaces. Methods: Seventy-five, defect-free, premolars were randomly assigned into five groups: control group (37% phosphoric acid + Transbond XT primer) and self etching primer treated groups (Transbond Plus self etching primer, Unifil bond, Clearfil SE bond, and Adhese). The shear bond strength was measured with a universal testing machine and the amount of residual adhesive remaining on the brackets after debonding was assessed by the adhesive remnant index (ARI). Results: The results showed that the groups conditioned with self etching primer had significantly lower shear bond strength than the control group (p < 0.05), although clinically acceptable. However, there were no significant differences in shear bond strength among the self etching primer groups (p > 0.05). Evaluation of the ARI scores indicated there was less resin remnant on the teeth in the groups conditioned with self etching primers, although not statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that all four of the self etching primers have shown acceptable bond strength for clinical use.

  • This paper describes the mean grain size and shear strength properties related to subsidence characteristics using sediment samples and acoustic images obtained from artificial reef areas in Tongyoung and Jangsungpo offshore. The acoustic images collected from chirp sonar and side scan sonar show well the attitude/orientation, the distribution pattern, and the degree of subsidence of artificial reefs, suggesting the possibility of suitable site investigation and the management of the reefs using acoustic sonar. The sediments were largely composed of clayey silt and silty clay. The mean grain sizes in Tongyoung and Jangsungpo offshore show the ranges of 5${\sim}$9${\Phi}$ and 8${\sim}$9${\Phi}$, respectively. The shear strength was significantly increased at the depths of 20cm in Tongyoung offshore and 80cm in Jangsungpo offshore, corresponding to the subsidence depth of artificial reefs. The relationship between mean grain size and shear strength did not show a correlation, suggesting the shear strength does not totally depend on mean grain size. Provided subsidence characteristics with respect to various artificial reefs and seabed condition are investigated in more details, the constructing area of the reef can be more extended.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets depending on the variety of adhesives and whether saliva exists, by using self-etching primer (SEP). Groups were divided according to the type of adhesive into resin adhesive (Trans bond XT) and resin-modified glass ionomer cement (Fuji Ortho LC). One group of resin adhesive used XT primer after etching with 37% phosphoric acid, and the other group used self-etching primer. One group of resin-modified glass ionomer cement only used etching for bonding, and the other group used SEP. Each of the groups were also classified by whether saliva was contaminated or not. and then the shear bond strength was measured. The results showed that when using resin adhesive, the shear bond strength of SEP was lower than the XT primer. In the resin-modified glass ionomer cement groups, the shear bond strength which depends on the priming method, did not have a meaningful difference statistically When saliva was contaminated, the group which used SEP, regardless of the adhesive variety, had a greater shear bond strength than the normal priming group. From these results, SEP showed a shear bond strength that is possible to be used clinically, regardless of the adhesive variety. It can especially be clinically useful to use SEP to bond brackets even on tooth surfaces contaminated with saliva, because it offers the appropriate bonding strength as well as shorter treatment time and easy application.

  • Generally, in a steel-concrete composite gilder, the shear connector which was constructed between concrete deck and steel girder should have enough stiffness to behave as one body, because the conformity between plate and concrete deck is influences by the stiffness and spacing of the shear connectors. If the stiffness of shear connectors are insufficient, slip would happen at the contact surface. Partial interaction is the case that takes account of slips. In this paper, an easy method is presented to evaluate the stiffness or spacing of the shear connector according to the degree of imperfection without difficult calculations for a composite gilder with partial interaction. Also, the horizontal shearing force applied to the shear connector and the longitudinal axial force, which is occurs at contact surface between concrete deck and steel girder, have been presented in a simple influence line that is various to the parameters of sectional properties, degree of imperfection and applied load points. Furthermore, through the case study, it determined the relationships between the degree of imperfection and the follows 1) spring constants 2) axial force and horizontal shearing force 3) stress and neutral axis by using the partial differential equation based on Newmark's Partial Interaction Theory.

  • This study has been carried out as a fundamental course for the analysis of the constitutive- equation for the materials like sands being hardened during Ehear. For this aim, experimentall tests with variable stress paths for the concrete material are performed using the cubical multi- axial test in which the three principle stresses are arbitrarily controlled. Stress-strain behaviors. and strength characteristics are suggested in octahedral planes. Various tests such as HC, CTC, . TC, 55 are performed. The main results summarized are as follows; 1. The order of strength from the largest to the smallest is CTC, TC, SS, and TE test. 2. The octahedral Ehear strength of concrete specimens is dependent upon the stress path(8) 3. There is a direct relation between strength and confining pressure. 4. The ultimate envelopes in the octahedral planes are non-circular-cone shaped. 5. Any ultimate criteria used to predict the strength behavior of concrete must include thin effect of the tensile stresses.

  • In this study, the nonlinear mechanical behavior of flexible textile composites was predicted by two-step analyses: micromechanics and mesomechanics. The effective material properties for fiber tows of flexible textile composite lamina were calculated in micromechanics, which were then used to calculate the effective tensile stress-strain curve of flexible textile composites in mesomechanics. A user defined material algorithm was developed and inserted in ABAQUS to account for the geometric non-linearity due to the large rotation and shear deformation of fiber tows in mesomechanics. It was found that the stress-strain behavior of flexible textile composites exhibited significant non-linearity. The effective tensile modulus agreed well with the test result.
