Pipeline structure is one of core underground infrastructure which transports primary sources. Since the almost pipeline structures are placed underground and connected each other complexly, it is difficult to monitor their structural health condition continuously. In order to overcome this limitation of recent monitoring technique, recently, a Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) system based on on-line and real-time monitoring system is being developed by the authors' research group. In this study, real-time pipeline health monitoring (PHM) methodology is presented based on electromechanical impedance methods using USN. Two types of damages including loosened bolts and notches are artificially inflicted on the pipeline structures, PZT and MFC sensors that have piezoelectric characteristics are employed to detect these damages. For objective evaluation of pipeline conditions, Damage metric such as Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD) value was computed from the impedance signals to quantify the level of the damage. Optimal threshold levels for decision making are estimated by generalized extreme value(GEV) based statistical method. Throughout a series of experimental studies, it was reviewed the effectiveness and robustness of proposed PHM system.

This paper presents a method for detecting damage to a structure at low cost using its impedance. The impedance technique is a typical method to detect local damage for structural health monitoring. This is a common technique for estimating damage by monitoring the electro-mechanical admittance signal of the structure. To apply this technique, an expensive impedance analyzer is generally used. On the other hand, it is necessary to develop a low-cost variant to effectively disseminate the technique. In this study, a method based on the transfer impedance using a function generator and digital multimeter, which are generally used in the laboratory instead of an impedance analyzer, was developed. That is, this technique estimates the damage by comparing the damage index using the amplitude ratio of the output voltage measured in the healthy and damaged state. A transfer impedance test was carried out on a steel specimen. By comparing the damage index, the presence of damage could be assessed reasonably. This study is a basic investigation of an impedance-based low-cost damage detection method that can be used effectively for structural health monitoring if supplemented with future research to estimate the damage location and severity.

The electro-mechanical impedance(EMI) behavior of piezoelectric sensor embedded in cement mortar was investigated to assess the setting times. EMI signal was continuously measured for 12 hours by the PZT sensor embedded in cement mortar with different ratio of sand. As a result, the setting times by the penetration resistance test were accelerated as the sand ratio increased. However, the setting times by EMI sensing technique were delayed as the sand ratio increased.

In this study, the setting times of concrete was evaluated using the electro-mechanical (EMI) behavior of piezoelectric sensor embedded in the concrete. Penetration resistance test was also performed to compare with EMI sensing technique. As a result, the setting times of concrete can be measured more effectively than penetration resistance test through the EMI sensing technique using the piezoelectric sensor.
The hydro-mechanical behavior of the Earth's crust is strongly dependent on the fractional volume and geometrical structure of effective pore spaces. This study aims to understand the characteristics of pores using electrical impedance. We measured the electric impedance of core samples (diameter, 38-50 mm; length, 70-100 mm) of three types of granite (Hwangdeung, Pocheon, and Yangsan) and two types of sandstone (Boryung and Berea) with different porosities and pore structures, after saturation with saline water of varying salinities. The results show that resistance decreases but capacitance increases with increasing salinity of the pore fluid. For a given salinity, the resistivity and formation factor are reduced with increasing porosity of the rocks, and the capacitance increases. Berea sandstone shows anisotropy in resistance, tortuosity, and cementation factor, with these factors being highest normal to bedding planes. This result indicates that the connectivity of pores is weakest normal to bedding. In conclusion, the electrical characteristics of the tested samples are related not only to their porosity but also to the pore geometry.

This study investigated the setting characteristics of cement paste with varying proportions of fly ash replacement using the electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) sensing technique. Cement paste samples were prepared with a water-to-binder ratio of 40 %, substituting fly ash for 10 %, 20 %, and 30 % of the cement weight. Piezoelectric (PZT) sensors were embedded in the center of each cement paste sample to continuously monitor the EMI signals. Vicat needle test and semi-adiabatic calorimetry test were conducted to validate the reliability of the EMI sensing technique in monitoring the setting of cement paste. Experimental results revealed notable changes in the magnitude and resonant frequency of the EMI resonant peaks during the setting time. It was confirmed that the setting times measured through the EMI sensing technique were correlated with those determined by the Vicat needle test and semi-adiabatic calorimetry test.

The electromagnetic signals associated with the seismic activity in the south-east offshore of Kii peninsula, Japan, were clearly recorded at the MT sites in Jeju island, Korea. In this research, we have identified the co-seismic electromagnetic signals associated with the seismic activity and have analyzed the characteristics of significant electromagnetic variations. The analysis of phase velocity, power spectral density, MT impedance and polarization direction shows that the significant earthquake signals have the frequency band of about 0.05 to 0.5 Hz and that the sources of electromagnetic field are local effects of passing seismic waves. The simple approximation using electrokinetic effect successfully explains the co-seismic EM signals coincides with measured data but cannot explain the localities of electromagnetic variations.

In the present we.k, temperature dependence of oxygen diffusivity in the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film $D_f$ formed on gold electrode was investigated using steady-state rotating disk electrode (RDE) technique and modulated electrohydrodynamic (EHD) impedance technique. Both the diffusion rate defined as the ratio of oxygen diffusivity in the PVC film to the film thickness $D_f/\delta_f$ and the time constant $\delta_f^2/D_f$ for oxygen diffusion through the PVC film were obtained from plot of the limiting current versus disk rotation speed and from filing the EHD impedance spectra experimentally measured to those theoretically calculated on the basis of the diffusion equation for mass transport through the non-conductive and porous film, respectively. By combining measured $D_f/\delta_f$ with $\delta_f^2/D_f$, we determined $\delta_f\;and\;D_f$ at room temperature separately. As temperature increased, it appeared that the $D_f$ value measured for the PVC film-covered gold RDE was enhanced more rapidly than that $D_s$ value in the solution measured for the PVC film-free gold RDE. This means that the pores glowing with increasing temperature act as effective diffusion paths within the film. The present in-situ steady-state and modulated EHD measurements prove to be effective for determining $\delta_f\;and\;D_f$, separately and at the same time the porosity of the PVC film at temperatures below glass temperature $T_g$ of the film.
We designed and fabricated an improved null-type torque magnetometer for measuring magnetic anisotropy of magnetic materials. This torque magnetometer has a measurement range of $~{\pm}15$ dyne.cm, and the range can be controlled. Resolution is ~0.0005 dyne.cm. Noise level is less than 0.01 dyne.cm with one measurement, and less than 0.004 dyne.cm with 10 averaged measuremets. The precision is less than 0.5 %. In contrast to typical null-type torque magnetometers, we placed a small ferrite magnet in the Helmholtz coil, instead of placing coil in the permanent magnet. From this novel sturucture, we can design a geometrically isotropic and relatively light-weight sample rod. Also, we can prevent the effect of input and output lines of coil exposed in the magnetic field in torque meter. Consequently, our novel null-type torque magnetometer can have a better sensitivity, faster response time, and smaller distortion of torque curve than commercially available torque magnetometers.
