The development of explosive detection technology in a security environment and fear of terrorism at homeland and abroad has been one of the most important issues. Moreover, research works on the explosive detection are highly required to achieve domestic production technology due to the implementation of aviation security performance certification system. Traditionally, explosives are detected by using classical chemical analyses. However, in the view of high sensitivity, rapid analysis, miniaturization and portability electrochemical methods are considered as promising. Most of electrochemical explosive detection technologies are developed in USA, China, Israel, etc. This review highlights the principle and research trend of electrochemical explosive detection technologies carried out overseas in addition to the research direction for future exploration.

Most medical sensors are disposable products. In order to reduce inspection and diagnosis costs, it is more important to develop the inexpensive electrode materials. We fabricated the CuO NPs/PANI/E-PGE as an electrode material for disposable electrochemical sensors and applied it to a non-enzymatic glucose sensor. For surface activation of PGE, pretreatment was performed using chemical and electrochemical methods, respectively. Electrochemical properties according to the pretreatment method were analyzed through chronoamperometry (CA), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance (EIS). From these analytical results, the electrochemically pretreated PGE (E-PGE) was finally adopted. The non-enzymatic glucose sensor based on CuO NPs/PANI/E-PGE shows sensitivity of 239.18 mA/mM×cm2 (in a linear range of 0.282~2.112 mM) and 36.99 mA/mM×cm2 (3.75423~50 mM), detection limit of 17.6 μM and good selectivity. Based on the results of this study, it was confirmed that the modified PGE is a high-performance electrode material. Therefore, these electrodes can be applied to a variety of disposable sensors.
Cyclodextrins are a class of oligosaccharides having an extremely low toxicity, so that they have been used for the formation of host-guest complexes and removal of toxic gases or molecules. In this study, the subtle phenomenon associated with the formation of host-guest complexes between cyclodextrin and toxic molecules (methyl paraben) was experimentally investigated. First, the formation of cyclodextrin-methyl paraben complexes was monitored by UV/Vis spectroscopy as a function of the cyclodextrin concentration. Secondly, the electrochemical measurement was performed with the surface engineered Au electrode having cyclodextrin molecules on the Au substrate. The sensing signal derived from the addition of methyl paraben solution into the Au surface was measured delicately. This study can be informative for future applications such as sensors.
As the attachable-type wearable devices have received considerable interests, the need for the development of high-performance electrode materials of fabric or textiles type is emerging. In this study, we demonstrated the electrochemical property of CNT fibers electrode as a flexible electrode material and its non-enzymatic glucose sensing performance. Surface morphology of CNT fibers was observed by SEM. And the electrochemical characteristics were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and chronoamperometry. The CNT fibers based sensor exhibited improved sensing performances such as high sensitivity, a wide linear range, and low detection limit due to improved electrochemical properties such as low capacitive current, good electrochemical activity by efficient direct electron transfer between the redox species and the electrode interface. Therefore, this study is expected to be used as a basic research for the development of high performance flexible electrode materials based on CNT fibers.
