  • This paper is concerned with the development of stacked ceramic thin actuation layer IDEAL (InterDigitated Electrode Actuation Layer) using d$_{33}$ actuation mechanism of piezoelectric ceramic. Most of the thin piezoelectric actuators are operated with d$_{31}$ actuation mechanism. Many kinds of piezoelectric ceramic actuators are strived now to improve the actuation performance. One of efforts to improve performance of piezoceramic actuators is the research trying to develop an actuator using the piezoelectric coefficient d$_{33}$ . The piezoelectric coefficient d$_{33}$ is almost twice larger than piezoelectric coefficient d$_{31}$ . Therefore, the induced strain of PZT thin layer with d$_{33}$ 3 actuation mechanism is bigger than that with d$_{31}$ actuation mechanism. The AFC(MIT) and LaRC-MFC$^{TM}$ which is developed by a research team of NASA Langley Research Center used d$_{33}$ actuation mechanism with surface interdigitated electrode to enhance its actuation performance. But their actuation mechanism is not perfect d$_{33}$ actuation mechanism since the interdigitated electrodes are placed at the surface of the actuation layer. In this research, the stacked ceramic thin actuation layer with imbedded interdigitated electrode is designed and manufactured. The actuation strain of stacked ceramic thin actuation layer is measured and compared with the actuation strain of the LaRC-MFC$^{TM}$. The comparison shows that the developed stacked ceramic thin actuation layer can produce 15% more actuation strain than LaRC-MFC$^{TM}$.> TM/.

  • This paper presents an inertia type of piezostack based active mount fur unmanned aero vehicle (UAV) camera system. After identifying the stiffness and damping properties of the rubber element and piezostack a mechanical model of the active mount system is established. The governing equation of mount is then derived and expressed in a state space form. Subsequently, a sliding mode controller which is robust to uncertain parameters is designed in order to reduce the vibration imposed according to the military specification associated with UAV camera mount system operation. Control performances such as acceleration and transmitted force are evaluated through both computer simulation and experimental implementation.

  • For the aerothermoelastic analysis of cylindrical piezolaminated shells, geometrically nonlinear finite elements based on the multi-field layerwise theory hale been developed. Applying a Han Krumhaar's supersonic piston theory, supersonic flutter analyses are performed for the cylindrical piezolaminted shells subject to thermal stresses and deformations. The possibility to increase flutter boundary and reduce thermoelastic deformations of piezolaminated panels is examined using piezoelectric actuations. Results show that active piezoelectric actuations can effectively increase the critical aerodynamic pressure by retarding the coalescence of flutter modes and compensating thermal stresses.

  • In this study, the pressurization characteristics of the small piezoelectric hydraulic pump for a brake system has been analyzed through modeling the full hydraulic pump components; the pump chamber, check valve, pump load, pump drive controller etc. To analyze the pressurization characteristics, the process of charging pressure in the chamber with stacked-layer piezoelectric actuator were firstly modeled. Secondly, the flow coefficient of the check valve in terms of valve opening has been calculated after computational fluid dynamics analysis, such as the pressure distribution around check valve and the flow rate, was conducted. Also the pump driving controller, which controls the input voltage to the actuator, was designed to make the load pressure follow the input pressure command. The simulation results find that it takes about 0.03ms to reach the operating load pressure required for the braking system. The simulation result was also verified through comparison to the result of the pump performance test.

  • Active vibration control of laminated composite plates has been carried out to design structure with maximum possible damping capacity, using piezoceramic sensor/actuators and passive constrained-layer damping treatment. The equations of motion are derived for symmetrical, multi-layer laminated plates. The damping ratio(ζ) and modal damping(2ζ$\omega$) of the first bending and torsional modes are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method for both passive and active vibration control. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite plate under structural vibrations.

  • Fracture behavior of a monolithic PZT and a plate-type piezoelectric composite actuator (PCA) has been investigated under a bending load at three points by an acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. AE signal from a monolithic PZT at the maximum bending load shows the characteristics of high amplitude and long duration with a low frequency band of $100{\sim}230kHz$ which is confirmed by fast Fourier transform (FFT). For a PCA, it is concluded that AE signals with high amplitude over 80dB and low dominant frequency band of $170{\sim}223kHz$ emitted in the stage I are due to the brittle fracture in the PZT layer and the delamination between the PZT layer and the adjacent fiber composite layer. Based on the above analysis of AE behavior and damage observations with an optical microscopy and a scanning electron microscopy, AE characteristics related to fracture behavior of asymmetrically laminated PCA have been elucidated.

  • A hybrid mount featuring elastic rubber and piezoelectric material is devised and applied to the vibration control of a beam structure. The governing equation of the beam structure associated with the hybrid mount is derived. Subsequently, a robust sliding mode controller is designed to attenuate the vibration of the beam structure due to external excitation. The controller is then simulated and control responses such as displatement and transmitted force are evaluated in time and frequency domains.

  • This paper is focused on the research of the ultra precision linear motor by using piezo stack actuators. The development of linear motor which can be controlled nano or micro scale is necessary for the precision manufacturing. Self-moving-cell principle is used for the design of linear motor Self-moving-cell linear motor is consisted of three cell structures, and each cell has two shells and one piezo-stack actuator. Each cell can do clamping and moving by two shell structures. The shell structure deformation by piezo stack actuator can move the linear motor by losing the clamping between the shall and guideway. This paper presents the design, manufacturing and test of the motor.

  • In this study, an assessment is made for the helicopter vibration reduction of composite rotor blades using an active twist control concept. The piezoceramic shear actuation mechanism along with elastic couplings of composite blades is used for vibration reduction. The rotor blades are modeled as composite box-beams with actuator layers bonded on the outer surfaces of the thin-walled section. The governing equations of motion for helicopter blades are obtained using Hamilton's principle. A time domain unsteady aerodynamic theory with free wake model is used to obtain the airloads. Various rotor configurations with different elastic couplings with appropriate actuator placement are used to investigate the hub vibration characteristics. Numerical results show that a substantial reduction of $N_b$/rev hub vibration can be achieved using the optimal control algorithm.
