  • A lot of colleges have made continued efforts to help freshmen adapt themselves to a new school life and environment and build a decent relationship with faculty and other students. Therefore, this study attempted to figure out the effectiveness of team teaching(team teaching by academic advisor, standard textbook-centered guidance vs. autonomous mentoring) on strategic cultural curriculum as a way to help freshmen adapt themselves to a school life. For research subjects, 31 enrolled freshmen and 5 professors from a college in Chungbuk were selected. In terms of research tools, 'Communication Competence Assessment Sheet' provided by Strategic Cultural Curriculum Development Team and a simple questionnaire on 'curriculum satisfaction, adaptation to school and intimacy' were applied. For data analysis, paired t-test, independent samples t-test and rating scale were conducted. The study results found the followings: First, according to analysis on the effects of two different types of team teaching on the goal of strategic cultural curriculum('improvement of communication competence'), significant effects were found in a standard curriculum(textbook)-centered team. Second, when adaptation to a school life(school adaptation, intimacy) perceived by the students who completed the strategic cultural curriculum according to two different types of team teaching curriculum was analyzed, significant changes were found at standard textbook-centered guidance team. Third, this study has examined other changes, satisfaction, opinions and perception(strength, weakness, opinions for improvement) on the curriculum perceived by the students(learners) and faculty regarding about team teaching curriculum. Based on these results, educational implications of this study were reviewed. And a suggestion and limits were presented.

  • This study aimed at analyzing what meaning international students' experiences of Taekwondo carry in the process of their understanding of Korean society and culture and their adaption to life in Korea, thereby exploring the educational value of Taekwondo in their adaption to Korean society and culture. The study was carried out for 15 weeks with the application of the method of case study. The subjects of the study included a total of 15 international students who had participated in Taekwondo class offered by the international interchange center of A University. Based on questions of the international students' reasons for studying in Korea, various aspects of life in Korea, reasons to participate in Taekwondo class and their participation in Taekwondo class and adaption to Korean society and culture, in-depth interviews, Participant observation and the collection of document materials were carried out. The international students decided to study in Korea because they expected to acquire various vocational opportunities in Korea, a developed nation, and they were interested in Korean system for studying abroad, which was more systematic than those of other nations, and in K-culture. While studying in Korea, they felt foreign about Korean society and culture, which were different from the societies and cultures of their nations, and had difficulty in communicating in Korean. While participating in Taekwondo class, the international students had the aesthetic experience of feeling the beauty of body movements and controlled their insides through mediation and improved their health, which in turn increased their self-confidence. Taekwondo class helped them to understand Korean society and culture, to merge Korean society and culture with those of their nations and to adapt to Korean society and culture through selective acception. They made acquaintances with Korean students through interchanges in Taekwondo class, which alleviated the loneliness they felt while studying abroad and helped them to continue their study in Korea with satisfaction.

  • From the engineering standpoint, this study puts a special emphasis on application of adaptive management. To do this, we analyze the recent issue about water scarcity of the Gwangdong dam. Using the system dynamics model, we defined the system including water balance in the dam, dam manager's operation rules, regional water supply and local water distribution, and customer damage. It was expected that the model is useful to explain the real case, and also water scarcity of Gwangdong led to total damage of about 2.56 billion won, mainly to customers in the Taebaeck city. Two adaptive management options (i.e., optimal allocation of limited water resources, and early control of dam storage) were applied to the model in order to examine whether adaptive management is effective to mitigate the damage, it is concluded that the case study could largely reduce or entirely avoid the damage with adaptive engineering options.

  • This study empirically investigates whether urbanization triggers urban disaster damages in the metropolitan areas of Korea by applying panel data analysis. Issues are approached with respect to the perspective that increased natural disaster damages are closely related with urbanization. This paper describes the conceptual framework of disaster management to understand the factors that determine urban disaster damages in Korea. This study used a simplified model with some key factors for analysis, because flood damage factors in urban areas are too diverse, and a full understanding of every cause is not feasible. The results indicate that urbanization does not necessarily lead to increasing urban disaster damages and if properly managed, urbanization can actually reduce urban disaster damage.

  • Most urban water management systems are becoming vulnerable to flooding and drought due to the climate change (CC), urbanization and energy shortage. Despite of poor water management circumstances caused by extremely uneven annual rainfall and hilly terrain, traditionally we have made a sound and sustainable life based on our own philosophy and technologies which copes with our rigid environment. In this study a new paradigm of rainwater management is suggested and multipurpose and creative rainwater harvesting and management (RWHM) systems are introduced providing several case studies such as rainfall storage drainage (RSD) system, rainwater infiltration facilities and star city RWHM system. This new RWHM paradigm leads Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) in the Republic of Korea to change regulations and politics for the integrated RWHM. Finally, RWHM is expected to improve the safety, efficiency, energy consumption of urban water infrastructure, to reduce urban heat island phenomenon and, furthermore, to contribute in finding solutions for worldwide water issues and to adapt CC.
