This paper proposes a real-time simulation technique for thin shells undergoing large deformation. Shells are thin objects such as leaves and papers that can be abstracted as 2D structures. Development of a satisfactory physical model that runs in real-time but produces visually convincing animation of thin shells has been remaining a challenge in computer graphics. Rather than resorting to shell theory which involves the most complex formulations in continuum mechanics, we adopt the energy functions from the discrete shells proposed by Grinspun et al. For real-time integration of the governing equation, we develop a modal warping technique for shells. This new simulation framework results from making extensions to the original modal warping technique which was developed for the simulation of 3D solids. We report experimental results, which show that the proposed method runs in real-time even for large meshes, and that it can simulate large bending and/or twisting deformations with acceptable realism.

Recently, the importance of CAE research is growing with the advances of the automotive and computer industry. In addition, multi-body dynamics and powertrain analysis are the most important factors in improving the vehicle design. Since engine torque with curve-data was used for analyzing full car simulation in the multi-body dynamics system for many years, it is impossible to assess the concurrent analysis of the engine and powertrain element included in a real full car system. In powertrain, since vehicle are usually modeled as a simple mass and a inertia, they can not be seen as real cars. Moreover, it is hard to obtain additional dynamics data other than the longitudinal velocity value in movement. Because of the reason that was previously discussed, it is necessary to consolidate the two parts as one routine program for design and development through the coordinate system connectivity, and presented here is a program named O-DYN. Using an object-oriented language C++, this program has a good structure with the valuable characteristics of objectivity, inheritance, and reusability. The reliability of this multi-body dynamics program is examined by DADS, which is the general dynamics program, using DAE solver and PECE integral function with the common coordinator separation method. As a result, we can obtain a better solution and total dynamics data in either area through this process. This program will be useful for analyzing full car simulation with powertrain.

The linear analysis for the balance of linear momentum of a structure is relatively easy to perform, but the error becomes large when the structure experiences large deformation. Therefore, the material and geometric nonlinearity need to be considered for the precise calculations in that case. The plastic flow of a ductile steel-like metal mainly transforms its dissipated mechanical energy into heat, which transfers under the first and second law of thermodynamics. This heat increases the temperature of the material and the strength of the material decreases accordingly, which affects mechanical behavior of the given structure. This paper presents a finite-strain thermo-elasto-plastic steel model. This model can handle large deformation and thermal load simultaneously, which is common during earthquake periods. Two 3-dimensional finite element analyses verify this formulation.
It is necessary to analyze underwater acoustics channel(UAC) modeling and simulation for underwater weapon system development and acquisition. In order to analyze UAC, there are underwater acoustics propagation numerical analysis models(Ray theory, Parabolic equation, Normal-mode, Wavenumber integration). However, If these models are used for multiple frequency signal analysis, they are inaccurate to calculate result of analysis effectiveness and restricted for signal processing and analysis. In this paper, to overcome this problem, we propose simple/multiple frequency signal analysis model of the Pseudospectral Time-Domain Method synthetic environment UAC applied to underwater environment noise model as like as realistic underwater environment. In order to confirm the validation of the model, we performed the 9 scenarios simulation(4 scenarios of single frequency signal, 4 scenarios of multiple frequency signal, 1 scenario of single/multiple frequency signal like submarine radiated noise) for validation and confirmed the validation of this model through the simulation model.

This paper describes a short-term prediction model for the movement of an oil slick in shallow waters. Under the assumption that the initial movement of the oil slick is governed by spreading and advection, the model has been developed and applied to Kyungki-Bay near Incheon Harbor. The initial spreading is estimated by using an empirical formula. The depth-averaged momentum equations are solved numerically for the volume transport velocities, in which the $M_2$ tide is the main driving source. A staggered grid system is adopted fur spatial discretization and the half-time method is implemented for time marching. The numerical result is visualized with the help of animation and thus the contaminated area is displayed on a monitor in time sequence. The input data are the time, the location and the volume of spill accident as well as environmental data such as md and $M_2$ tide.

This study presents a moving least squares (MLS) finite difference method for solving elastic crack problems with stress singularity at the crack tip. Near-tip functions are intrinsically employed in the MLS approximation to model near-tip field inducing singularity in stress field. employment of the functions does not lose the merit of the MLS Taylor polynomial approximation which approximates the derivatives of a function without actual differentiating process. In the formulation of crack problem, computational efficiency is considerably improved by taking the strong formulation instead of weak formulation involving time consuming numerical quadrature Difference equations are constructed on the nodes distributed in computational domain. Numerical experiments for crack problems show that the intrinsically enriched MLS finite difference method can sharply capture the singular behavior of near-tip stress and accurately evaluate stress intensity factors.

One of the subtle problems that make noise control difficult for engineers is “the invisibility of noise or sound.” The visual image of noise often helps to determine an appropriate means for noise control. There have been many attempts to fulfill this rather challenging objective. Theoretical or numerical means to visualize the sound field have been attempted and as a result, a great deal of progress has been accomplished, for example in the field of visualization of turbulent noise. However, most of the numerical methods are not quite ready to be applied practically to noise control issues. In the meantime, fast progress has made it possible instrumentally by using multiple microphones and fast signal processing systems, although these systems are not perfect but are useful. The state of the art system is recently available but still has many problematic issues : for example, how we can implement the visualized noise field. The constructed noise or sound picture always consists of bias and random errors, and consequently it is often difficult to determine the origin of the noise and the spatial shape of noise, as highlighted in the title. The first part of this paper introduces a brief history, which is associated with “sound visualization,” from Leonardo da Vinci's famous drawing on vortex street (Fig. 1) to modern acoustic holography and what has been accomplished by a line or surface array. The second part introduces the difficulties and the recent studies. These include de-Dopplerization and do-reverberation methods. The former is essential for visualizing a moving noise source, such as cars or trains. The latter relates to what produces noise in a room or closed space. Another mar issue associated this sound/noise visualization is whether or not Ivecan distinguish mutual dependence of noise in space : for example, we are asked to answer the question, “Can we see two birds singing or one bird with two beaks?"

The p-convergent boundary element method has been proposed to analyze two-dimensional potential problem on the basis of high order Legendre shape functions that have different property comparing with the shape functions in conventional boundary element method. The location of nodes corresponding to high order shape function are not defined along the boundary, called by nodeless node, similar to the p-convergent finite element method. As the order of shape function increases, the collocation point method is used to solve linear simultaneous equations. The collocation patterns of p-convergent boundary element method consist of non-symmetric hierarchial or symmetric non-hierarchical. As the order of shape function increases, the number of collocation point increases. The singular integral that appears in p-convergent boundary element has been calculated by special numeric quadrature technique and semi-analytical integration technique. The L-shape domain problem including singularity in the vicinity of reentrant comer is analyzed and the numerical results show that the relative error is smaller than $10^{-2}%$ range as compared with other results in literatures. In case of same condition, the symmetric p-collocation point pattern shows high accuracy of solution.
The objective of this study is to develop the accurate, robust and high resolution two-dimensional numerical model that solves the computationally difficult hydraulic problems, including the wave front propagation over dry bed and abrupt change in bathymetry. The developed model in this study solves the conservative form of the two-dimensional shallow water equations using an unsplit finite volume scheme and HLLC approximate Riemann solvers to compute the interface fluxes. Bed-slope term is discretized by the divergence theorem in the framework of FVM for application of unsplit scheme. Accurate and stable SGM, in conjunction with the MUSCL which is second-order-accurate both in space and time, is adopted to balance with fluxes and source terms. The exact C-property is shown to be satisfied for balancing the fluxes and the source terms. Since the spurious oscillations in second-order schemes are inherent, an efficient slope limiting technique is used to supply TVD property. The accuracy, conservation property and application of developed model are verified by comparing numerical solution with analytical solution and experimental data through the simulations of one-dimensional dam break flow without bed slope, steady transcritical flow over a hump and two-dimensional dam break flow with a constriction.

An accurate thick beam element (TB4) which includes the effects of the shear deformation and rotatory inertia has been degenerated from the three dimensional continuum by employing the Timoshenko beam assumptions. The proposed TB4 element has four nodes and two degrees of freedom at each node, totally eight degrees of freedom. The transverse deflection W and plane rotation ${\theta}$ with the cubic interpolation functions are selected as nodal variables. The element characteristics are formulated by discretizing the beam equations of motion, using the Galerkin weighted residual method, and are numerically integrated by the reduced shear integration technique, using the three-point Gauss quadrature with the various shear coefficients. Several numerical examples are analyzed to demonstrate the accuracy and the monotonic convergence behavior of the proposed TB4 beam element. The result indicates that the TB4 element shows the more excellent performance and the monotonic convergence behavior than the other existing Timoshenko beam type elements for the whole range of the beam aspect ratios, in both static and free vibration analyses.
