Estimation of Bed Resistance in Gravel-bed Rivers Using the Equivalent Roughness Height (등가조고를 이용한 자갈하천의 하상저항 산정)

  • The objective of this study is to estimate bed-resistance in gravel-bed rivers using the equivalent roughness height($k_s$). We calculated the friction factor(f) with the measured data from 8 domestic gravel-bed rivers and investigated the size distributions of the bed materials. The averaged $k_s$ in each cross-section, which is determined under the hypothesis that the vertical velocity distribution follows the logarithmic law, is compared with the reach $k_s$ which is calculated with the cumulative grain diameter distribution curve of bed materials. Moreover, the applicability of existing formulae, such as Strickler type equations, is examined by comparing with Manning's n value converted from the $k_s$. According to the results, the reach $k_s$ proves to be a good indicator of representative characteristic of bed materials in a reach, and the Manning's n based on the reach $k_s$ is appropriate for practical estimation of the bed-resistance, for RMS errors between calculated and measured Manning's n is less than 0.003. The correlation between the $k_s$ and specified bed-material size($D_i$) is very low, so it is difficult to select a proper one among the existing empirical equations.

  • In this study, the emission rate of pollutant was modified according to the published standards, and the distribution of pollutant concentration was analyzed for each vehicle velocity. This modified emission rate was applied to a model tunnel and it was proved that the required air quantity was reduced to 49%, compared to the PIARC method. From the simulation result, it was proved by using statistics that the most sensitive factor among them is the friction coefficient and it was modified to the value in the range of 0.018 to 0.021. It is also expected that the required air quantity can be decreased form 14.4% to 19.2% according as the coefficient is applied to the domestic model tunnels. In conclusion, it is proposed that the number of jet fans can be reduced and the annual operating cost can be curtailed as well.

  • 아주작은 Reynolds수 조건하의 나선형 미세입자가 갖는 저항 및 이동계수를 계산하 는 일반적인 방법을 논하였다. 이러한 문제의 해를 구하기 위해서는 입자의 중심선을 따라 분포되어 있는 stokeslet으로 수식화된 유동장을 필요로 한다. 입자에 작용하는 수동력학적 힘과 토오크는 이러한 stokeslet의 적분에 의하여 구할 수 있는데 유동특성에 따라 2계 이상 의 텐서에 비례한다. Johnson에 의하여 유도된 적분방정식은 LU-분해법을 사용하여 해를 구하였다. 해석 결과의 정확성은 침상체를 모델로 하여 Brenner의 엄밀해와 비교하였으며, 일치된 결과를 얻었다.

The Effect of Floor Slipperiness on Gait Characteristic (바닥의 미끄럼 저항이 보행 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The floor slipperiness is an essential property for the pedestrian safety. This study was conducted to develop the slip test apparatus to be well accorded with actual characteristics of human gait; and the correlation between RCOF (Required coefficient of friction), Rz (Surface roughness), and 3 coefficients of slip resistance (C.S.R (Coefficient of slip resistance), BPN (British pendulum number), and SCOF (Static coefficient of friction)) were analyzed. Result of the analysis revealed that the cadence, stride length, and step length were proportional to the walking speed, and the significant correlation between walking speed and RCOF was found. However, the correlation between RCOF and the other respective coefficients of slip resistance was almost unidentified thus it would be difficult to identify the actual property of floor slipperiness with the RCOF alone.

  • This study was conducted to predict the tractive resistance for tree length logs being skidded by ground based logging machine. The mathematical models for predicting the tractive resistance of tree length log have been developed. The tractive resistance is expressed as a function of log weight, skidding coefficient, and ground gradient. The skidding coefficients for four species of Korean pine, Japanese larch, mongolian oak, and cork oak were determined under laboratory condition using universal testing machine and small soil bin, Three different tractive resistance models were applied to four species and compared with each other. The ratios (T/Wt) of skidding-line tensions to the skidding log weight increased linearly with increment in ground gradient. Semi-ground skidding generally required smaller tensions than ground skidding under given condition. Results of this study can be utilized as basic information for logging machine selection and power requirement of skidding winch.

  • In this paper, integrated pressure sensor with calibration of offset voltage and full scale output and temperature compensation of offset voltage and full scale output were designed. The signal conditioning circuitry are designed that calibrate the offset voltage and full scale output to desired values and minimize the temperature drift of offset voltage and full scale output. Designed circuits are simulated using SPICE in a bipolar technology. The ion implanted resistor of different temperature coefficient were used to trimming the desired values. As a results, offset voltage was calibrated to 0.133V and the temperature drift of offset voltage was reduced to $42\;ppm/^{\circ}C$. Also, the full scale output was calibrated to 4.65V and the temperature coefficient of full scale output was reduced to $40ppm/^{\circ}C$ after temperature compensation.

  • About half of bridges in United States are considered to be deficient and therefore are in need of repair or replacement. Half of these are functionally obsolete, and others do not have required strength For these bridges repairs and replacements are needed To avoid the high cost of rehabilitation the bridge rating must corectly report the present load-carrying capacity Rating engineers use Allowable Stress Design(ASD) Load Factor Design(LFD), and Load Resistance Factor Design(LRFD) to evaluate the bridge load carrying capacity In this paper the load rating methods are introduced and bridge load test data are collected. The reasons that make the difference between test results and analytical results are explained for each bridge load test And load rating methods are applied to real bridge. The rating factors from each method are compared.

Consolidation Behavior of Vertical Drain in consideration of Smear Effect and Well Resistance (교란효과와 배수저항을 고려한 연직 배수재의 압밀 거동)

  • This study was compared the degree of consolidation by Hyperbolic, Curve fitting, Asaoka's, Monden's methods using measured value with theoretical curve in consideration of smear effect and well resistance. The results of the study were summarized as follows ; 1. The degree of consolidation by Hyperbolic method was underestimated than the degree of consolidation by Curve fitting, Asaoka's, and Monden's methods. 2. Typical range of horizontal coefficient of consolidation was $C_h=(2{\sim}3)C_v$ in the case considering smear effect and well resistance, and $C_h=(0.5{\sim}2.5)C_v$ in the case disregarding smear effect and well resistance. 3. The degree of consolidation obtained by ground settlement monitoring was nearly same value when the coefficient of permeability of smear zone by back analysis was shown the half that of in-situ and the diameter of smear zone was shown double that of mendrel. 4. Increasing of diameter reduction ratio of drain, the time of consoildation was delayed. The affection of well resistance the case of small coefficient of permeability was much more than that in the case of large coefficient of permeability. It was recommended that design of diameter reduction of drain consider smear effect and well resistance.
