  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of long-term endurance exercise and salvia miltiorrhiza vinegar on body composition and insulin resistance of high-fat diet (30% carbohydrate, 50% fat and 20% protein) induced obese rats. After 8 weeks of high fat diet (50% of total calories), rats were divided into 4 groups (sedentary group, n=10; exercise group, n=10; Salvia miltiorrhiza vinegar group, n=10; exercise+Salvia miltiorrhiza vinegar group, n=10) for 8 weeks. Body weight, body composition, diet intake volume, oral glucose tolerance test, plasma total cholesterol were measured. The results showed that Salvia miltiorrhiza vinegar plus endurance exercise training for 8 weeks significantly improved body weight control, visceral fat weight, and insulin resistance. However, only Salvia miltiorrhiza vinegar treatment did not significantly improve body composition and insulin resistance. In addition, there was no additive by the combination of Salvia miltiorrhiza vinegar and endurance exercise in insulin, body fat, and total cholesterol. The reduction of body fat, glucose, insulin and cholesterol by combination was resulted from the exercise. These results suggest that Salvia miltiorrhiza vinegar has slight effect on anti-hyperglycemia and anti-obesity.

  • It is well known that any kind of physical activity can be a useful nonpharmacological tool in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, including antihypertension. There is also strong evidence that suggests that people with cardiovascular disease are less active than healthy people. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a 12-week walking exercise intervention program on body composition, insulin resistance, and blood pressure in obese elderly women with stage 1 hypertension. The walking exercise program was performed for 50 min, three times per week. The intensity progressively increased: RPE 11 to 12, 40-50% HRR, for weeks 1-4; RPE 12 to 13, 50-60% HRR, for weeks 5-8; and RPE 13 to 14, 60-65% HRR, for weeks 9-12. The subjects were 20 obese elderly women with stage 1 hypertension (SBP: 140-159 mmHg or DBP: 90-99 mmHg). Half were placed in the walking exercise group (EX, n=10), and half were placed in the control group (CON, n=10). At the end of the program, the EX group members had significantly lower body fat, insulin resistance, and SBP compared to the CON group members. These results suggest that undertaking a 12-week walking exercise program improves body fat, insulin resistance, and SBP, which may improve the incidence of metabolic disease in elderly obese women with stage 1 hypertension.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of smart machine circulation exercise on body composition, lung function, blood lipid and insulin resistance in obesity middle-aged women among 40-60 years by dividing them into a smart machine circulation exercise group(n=8), and control group(n=6). The smart machine circulation exercise program included 55-minutes sessions thrice each week at the following intensities: The strength of aerobic exercise is applied to smart machines by linking the smart machine with the POLAR T31; the 1-4 week is 40-50%HRR, 5-8 week is 50-60%HRR, and 9-10 week is 60-70%HRR. The strength of the resistance exercise was tested using a smart machine based on the constant velocity motion, and then, using the 1-RM data value, applied 40% 1-RM for 1-4 weeks, 60% 1-RM for 5-8 weeks, and 80% 1-RM for 9-10 week. As a results, body composition indicated that weight, BMI, %BF, WHR had a significant interaction effect. Lung function indicated that FVC levels significantly changes in the exercise group and the between groups difference in changes at 10week was significant. Also, FVC and FEV1 significantly showed interaction effect. TC, TG and HDL-C levels significantly changes in smart machine circulation exercise group and the between-group difference in changes after 10 weeks was significant. TC, TG and HDL-C significantly showed interaction effect. Insulin resistance demonstrated that Insulin, Glucose and HOMA-IR levels significantly showed difference over 10 weeks between group. Therefore, the 10 weeks smart machine circulation exercise positively effects on the body composition, lung function, blood lipids, and insulin resistance in obesity middle-aged women and this smart machine circulation exercise can improve their obesity and prevent obesity.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of resistance exercise training and high-protein diet on anabolic factors and insulin resistance of skeletal muscle in sarcopenic obese rats. 50wks of male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned for 4 groups(Chow, HP, Ex, HPEx) after 6 weeks of high-rat diet induced obesity period. The 8-week of ladder climbing exercise significantly reduced body fat and insulin resistance, significantly increased mTOR activity. However hind limb muscles weight were not changed. When treat with exercise and high-protein diet, body fat and insulin resistance did not improve, but rather the effect of exercise training appeared to be inhibited. Therefore high protein diet for improving the sarcopenic obesity may be need more study about the amount and composition of protein.

  • This study investigated the effects of exercise intensity on PGC-$1{\alpha}$, PPAR-${\gamma}$, and insulin resistance in skeletal muscle of high fat diet-fed Sprague-Dawley rats. Forty rats were randomly divided into five groups: sedentary control group (SED), high fat diet group (HF), high fat diet+low-intensity exercise group (HFLE, 22 m/min, 60 min, 6 days/week), high fat diet+moderate-intensity exercise group (HFME, 26 m/min, 51 min), and high fat diet+high-intensity exercise group (HFHE, 30 m/min, 46 min). After 4 weeks of high fat diet and endurance exercise training, the lipid profiles, insulin, and glucose concentrations were determined in plasma. PGC-$1{\alpha}$, PPAR-${\gamma}$, and GLUT-4 contents were measured in plantaris muscle. The rate of glucose transport in soleus muscle was determined under submaximal insulin concentration ($1,000{\mu}IU/mL$ insulin, 20 min) during muscle incubation. Plasma glucose during oral glucose tolerance test in HF was significantly greater than that in SED, and plasma glucose levels in the three exercise (EX) groups were significantly lower that those in SED and HF at 30 and 60 min, respectively (P<0.05). Plasma insulin levels in the EX groups were significantly reduced by 60 min compared to that in HF (P<0.05). The protein expression level of PGC-$1{\alpha}$ as well as muscle glucose uptake were significantly higher in SED and HF than those in the three EX groups (P<0.05), and HFHE showed significantly higher levels than HFLE and HFME. Expression levels of GLUT-4 and PPAR-${\gamma}$ were significantly higher in the HFLE, HFME, and HFHE groups compared to the SED and HF (P<0.05). Therefore, the results of this study indicate that 4 weeks of high fat diet significantly developed whole body insulin resistance but did not affect PGC-$1{\alpha}$, PPAR-${\gamma}$, or the glucose transport rate in skeletal muscle, and exercise training was able to attenuate deteriorated whole body insulin resistance due to high fat diet. In addition, high intensity training significantly affected PGC-$1{\alpha}$ expression and the glucose transport rate of skeletal muscle in comparison with low and middle training intensities.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of acute forest walking exercise on blood glucose of IGT (impaired glucose tolerance), NIDDM (non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus) in the elderly. There were four groups (n=60): forest walking exercise with IGT group (n=15; $66.21{\pm}4.16$ yrs), forest walking exercise with NIDDM group (n=15; $64.85{\pm}3.23$ yrs), field walking exercise with IGT group (n=15; $67.44{\pm}1.78$ yrs), field walking exercise with NIDDM group (n=15; $65.55{\pm}8.21$ yrs). They were tested on blood glucose levels at the beginning and at the end of each walking exercise. While the forest walking groups (interval + resistance exercise) worked for 40minutes with HRmax 50~60% level, the field walking groups (only aerobic exercise) worked for 40 minutes with HRmax 50~60% level. For data analysis, mean and standard deviation scores were calculated, and paired t-test and ANCOVA test were used. This study resulted in as follows. First, both walking groups showed the significant decrease of blood glucose in impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) after completing each exercise. Second, while the forest walking group showed the significant decrease of blood glucose in insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) after completing the forest exercise, the field walking group did not present any decrease of blood glucose in NIDDM after the field walking exercise. Therefore, the present findings suggest that the forest walking exercise as an interval and resistance exercise may be more effective to decrease blood glucose for IGT and NIDDM peoples in comparison to the field walking exercise as an aerobic exercise.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of low intensity resistance training speed on body composition, muscle activity and muscle strength in obese middle-aged women. The subjects (n = 12) were randomly assigned to normal resistance training speed group (NSG, n = 6) and slow resistance training speed group (SSG, n = 6). NSG was performed the for 3 sets ${\times}$ 35 times and total 3-s per repetition (eccentric: 1-s, isometric: 1-s, concentric: 1-s), and SSG performed for 3 sets ${\times}$ 15 times and total 7-s per repetition (eccentric: 3-s, isometric: 1-s, concentric: 3-s). Both groups performed the low intensity resistance training at 30% of 1-RM for 105-s per set, rest for 1 min between sets, rest for 3 min between exercises, and 2~3 times per week, for 4 weeks. The body composition, muscle activity and muscle strength were measured before and 4 week after resistance training. WHR at NSG and body fat at SSG were significantly decreased after resistance training compared with before (P<.05). Muscle activity of biceps brachii, vastus medialis and vastus lateralis at both groups were significantly decreased after resistance training compared with before (P<.05, P<.01). Muscle strength of biceps curl and leg extension at both groups were significantly increased after resistance training compared with before (P<.01). However, body composition, muscle activity and muscle strength did not show statistically significant differences between the groups. Our results suggest that body composition, muscle activity and muscle strength should closely related to the performance time of resistance training (development time of muscle contraction), rather than resistance training speed (repetition frequency).

  • The elderly population has been dramatically increasing over the past years, but most of the population has developed chronic diseases and handicaps due to aging. High-intensity resistance training is one of the most effective ways to improve muscular strength, but it is unclear whether body composition and functional fitness would be increased by high-intensity resistance training. The aim of this investigation was to explore whether 12 weeks of high-intensity training would improve muscular strength, body composition, and functional fitness in women over the age of 70 years. Twenty-four participants were randomly assigned to a high-intensity resistance training group (n=8), a low-intensity resistance training group (n=8), and a control group (n=8). The experimental groups exercised 3 days per week for 12 weeks at a local fitness center. An analysis of variance(ANOVA) with repeated measures was used for analysis. The results showed that there was a significant improvement in agility and muscular strength following the high-intensity resistance training. Moreover, Moreover, %body fat and body fat mass decreased significantly after the 12 weeks of high-intensity resistance training(p<0.05). Based on these results, it was concluded that high-intensity resistance training is efficient for women over the age 70 years in increasing their muscular strength and functional fitness and reducing their total body fat mass.
