Petroleum reservoir characterization is a process for quantitatively describing various reservoir properties in spatial variability using all the available field data. Porosity and permeability are the two fundamental reservoir properties which relate to the amount of fluid contained in a reservoir and its ability to flow. These properties have a significant impact on petroleum fields operations and reservoir management. In un-cored intervals and well of heterogeneous formation, porosity and permeability estimation from conventional well logs has a difficult and complex problem to solve by conventional statistical methods. This paper suggests an intelligent technique using fuzzy logic and neural network to determine reservoir properties from well logs. Fuzzy curve analysis based on fuzzy logics is used for selecting the best related well logs with core porosity and permeability data. Neural network is used as a nonlinear regression method to develop transformation between the selected well logs and core analysis data. The intelligent technique is demonstrated with an application to the well data in offshore Korea. The results show that this technique can make more accurate and reliable properties estimation compared with previously used methods. The intelligent technique can be utilized a powerful tool for reservoir characterization from well logs in oil and natural gas development projects.
Well logging technologies are used to measure the physical properties of reservoirs through boreholes. These technologies have been utilized to understand reservoir characteristics, such as porosity, fluid saturation, etc., using equations based on rock physics models. The analysis of well logs is performed by selecting a reliable rock physics model adequate for reservoir conditions or characteristics, comparing the results using the Archie's equation or simandoux method, and determining the most feasible reservoir properties. In this study, we developed a joint inversion algorithm to estimate physical properties in shaly sandstone reservoirs based on the pre-existing algorithm for sandstone reservoirs. For this purpose, we proposed a rock physics model with respect to shale volume, constructed the Jacobian matrix, and performed the sensitivity analysis for understanding the relationship between well-logging data and rock properties. The joint inversion algorithm was implemented by adopting the least-squares method using probabilistic approach. The developed algorithm was applied to the well-logging data obtained from the Colony gas sandstone reservoir. The results were compared with the simandox method and the joint inversion algorithms of sand stone reservoirs.
With the development of industry and standard of living, the quantity of groundwater consumption has been increasing. For the analysis of groundwater, to determine the hydraulic parameters of aquifer is very important. Various numerical methods have been developed to solve aquifer tests and eliminate the subjectivity of traditional graphical type curve methods. The slope-matching method, which matches the slope of the Theis type curve to the slope of the field data, can be used to numerically solve pump tests for both leaky and nonleaky aquifers. A FORTRAN program on based slope-matching method was developed to obtain the transmissivity, storage coefficient, and leaky factor from pumping test data automatically. Results derived from published data show that the improved slope-matching method gives parameters close to the ones derived by the slope-matching method.

The MODFLOW simulated results with varying input parameter values were compared and analyzed. To understand the relative importance of the input parameters, sensitivity analysis was carried out. The amount of sustainable yield was analyzed with respect to the hydraulic conductivity, specific yield, specific storage, aquifer thickness and the distance of the wells from the river. The results of sensitivity analysis showed that inflow from the river and the aquifer storage were sensitive to the specific yield and aquifer thickness. Sustainable yield was sensitive to the hydraulic conductivity and aquifer thickness. The results of this study can be used as a basic information for groundwater development and management plannings considering regional characteristics.

The storage variation in the vadose zone at a hillslope is important to understand the hydrological process. This study explores seasonal changes of soil water storage at a hillslope scale. The study was conducted on a hillslope of Beomrunsa, located in the Seolma-cheon river basin in Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do. Using soil moisture measurements through Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR), storage, discharge, and response constant were calculated for all monitoring points on a hillslope between March and November, 2010. This study found that temporal changes in storage are resulted from the rainfall distribution patterns. Analysis of the spatial changes in storage indicated that the soil water storage tends to increase towards the downslope direction. The discharges calculated based on the soil water measurements exhibited a high correlation with observation discharge. The storage response constant was high during the autumn which demonstrates the increased contribution from upslope is responsible for the occurrence of soil water recharge during autumn.

A systematic methodology is developed for the prediction of the lithology using electrofacies classification from wireline log data. Multivariate statistical techniques are adopted to segment well log measurements and group the segments into electrofacies types. To consider corresponding contribution of each log and reduce the computational dimension, multivariate logs are transformed into a single variable through principal components analysis. Resultant principal components logs are segmented using the statistical zonation method to enhance the quality and efficiency of the interpreted results. Hierarchical cluster analysis is then used to group the segments into electrofacies. Optimal number of groups is determined on the basis of the ratio of within-group variance to total variance and core data. This technique is applied to the wells in the Korea Continental Shelf. The results of field application demonstrate that the prediction of lithology based on the electrofacies classification works well with reliability to the core and cutting data. This methodology for electrofacies determination can be used to define reservoir characterization which is helpful to the reservoir management.
In this study, a method is devised to implement a supercritical $CO_2$ ($scCO_2$) injection environment on a laboratory scale and to investigate the effects of $scCO_2$ on the properties of rock specimens. Specimens of shale and sandstone normally constituting the cap rock and reservoir rock, respectively, were kept in a laboratory reactor chamber with $scCO_2$ for two weeks. From this stage, a chemical reaction between rock surface and the $scCO_2$ was induced. The effect of saline water was also investigated by comparing three conditions ($scCO_2$-rock, $scCO_2-H_2O$-rock and $scCO_2$-brine(1M)-rock). Finally, we checked the changes in the properties before and after the reaction by destructive and nondestructive testing procedures. The swelling of shale was a main concern in this case. The experimental results suggested that $scCO_2$ has a greater effect on the swelling of the shale than pure water and brine. It was also observed that the largest swelling displacement of shale occurred after a reaction with the $H_2O-scCO_2$ solution. The results of a series of the destructive and nondestructive tests indicate that although each of the property changes of the rock differed depending on the reaction conditions, the $H_2O-scCO_2$ solution had the greatest effect. In this study, shale was highly sensitive to the reaction conditions. These results provide fundamental information pertaining to the stability of $CO_2$ storage sites due to physical and chemical reactions between the rocks in these sites and $scCO_2$.
