Electromagnetic Flapping Shutters for Phone Cameras (폰 카메라용 전자기력 Flapping 셔터)

  • In this study, we present small-size, low-power, and high-speed electromagnetic flapping shutters for phone cameras. These shutters are composed of trapezoidal twin blades suspended by H-type torsional springs. The existing electrostatic rolling and flapping shutters need high input voltage, while the existing electromagnetic rotating shutters are too big to be used for phone cameras. To achieve low-power and high-speed angle motion for small-size electromagnetic flapping shutters for camera phones, low-inertia trapezoidal twin blades, each suspended by the low-stiffness H-type torsional springs, are employed. The electromagnetic flapping shutters used in this experimental study have steady-state rotational angles of $48.8{\pm}1.4^{\circ}$ and $64.4{\pm}1.0^{\circ}$ in the magentic fields of 0.15 T and 0.30 T, respectively, for an input current of 60 mA; the maximum overshoot angles are $80.2{\pm}3.5^{\circ}$ and $90.0{\pm}1.0^{\circ}$ in the magentic fields of 0.15 T and 0.30 T, respectively. The rising/settling times of the shutter while opening are 1.0 ms/20.0 ms, while those while closing are 1.7 ms/10.3 ms. Thus, we experimentally demonstrated that the smallsize (${\sim}8{\times}8{\times}2\;mm^3$), low-power (${\leq}60\;mA$), and high-speed (~1/370 s) electromagnetic flapping shutters are suitable for phone cameras.

  • The speed change performance of transmissions has become a serious issue because of the increase in the inertia moment that has accompanied increases in engine output and transmission size. Therefore, it is necessary to develop better wear resistant friction materials. In this study, an appropriate sintered friction component for the synchronizer ring of a diesel manual transmission was developed, and its bonding characteristics were analyzed. That is, a process for bonding an Fe-based base material and Cu-based sintered friction material was developed. BSE and EDX analyses of this bonding layer were conducted, along with a shear strength test, to determine the bonding characteristics.

  • In ships and offshore structures, there are many local structures formed of thick plates and/or having the form of double wall panels. For the vibration analysis of such a kind of structures, Mindlin plate theory which includes the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia is usually adopted. In this paper, the vibration and dynamic sensitivity analysis of Mindlin plates having the boundary conditions elastically restrained against rotation have been accomplished using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. Polynomials having the property of the Timoshenko beam functions are introduced and used as trial functions in the spatial representation of the deflection and rotations of cross sections in two directions of the plates. The results obtained by the introduced polynomials gave nearly the same numerical results as those by the Timoshenko beam functions with the remarkable reduction of computational efforts especially in the dynamic sensitivity analysis.

Power Decoupling Control Method of Grid-Forming Converter: Review

  • Recently, Grid-forming(GFM) converter, which offers features such as virtual inertia, damping, black start capability, and islanded mode operation in power systems, has gained significant attention. However, in low-voltage microgrids(MG), it faces challenges due to the coupling phenomenon between active and reactive power caused by the low line impedance X/R ratio and a non-negligible power angle. This power coupling issue leads to stability and performance degradation, inaccurate power sharing, and control parameter design problems for GFM converters. Therefore, this paper serves as a review study on not only control methods associated with GFM converters but also power decoupling techniques. The aim is to introduce promising control methods and enhance accessibility to future research activities by providing a critical review of power decoupling methods. Consequently, by facilitating easy access for future researchers to the study of power decoupling methods, this work is expected to contribute to the expansion of distributed power generation.

  • In this paper, we propose a Pedestrian Position Information System(PPIS) using low-cost inertial sensors in GPS-disabled area. The proposed scheme estimates the attitude/heading angle and step detection of pedestrian. Additionally, the estimation error due to the inertial sensors is mitigated by using additional sensors. We implement a portable hardware module to evaluate performance of the proposed system. Through the experiments in indoor building, the estimation error of position information was measured as 2.4% approximately.

  • Lymphoma is an uncommon type of breast malignancy, with low prevalence. The ultrasonographic findings of breast lymphoma have been described as nonspecific. Breast lymphoma most commonly appears as a solitary hypoechoic mass on US, and usually shows hypervascularity on color Doppler US. Herein, we report an unusual case of breast lymphoma that presented as multiple bilateral hyperechoic nodules on US.

Development of Attitude Heading Reference System based on MEMS for High Speed Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (고속 자율 무인잠수정 적용을 위한 MEMS 기술기반 자세 측정 장치 개발)

  • This paper proposes the performance evaluation test of attitude heading reference system (AHRS) suitable for small high speed autonomous underwater vehicle(AUV). Although IMU can provides the detail attitude information, it is sometime not suitable for small AUV with short operation time in view of price and the electrical power consumption. One of alternative for tactical grade IMU is the AHRS based micro-machined electro mechanical system(MEMS) which can overcome many problems that have inhibited the adoption of inertial system for small AUV such as cost and power consumption. A cost effective and small size AHRS which incorporates measurements from 3-axis MEMS gyroscopes, accelerometers, and 3-axis magnetometers has been developed to provide a complete attitude solution for AUV and the attitude calculation algorithm is derived based the coordinate transform equation and Kalman filter. The developed AHRS was validated through various performance tests as like the magnetometer calibration, operating experiments using land mobile vehicle and flight motion simulator (FMS). The test of magnetometer calibration shows the developed MEMS AHRS is robust to the external magent field change and the test with land vehicle proves the leveling error of developed MEMS AHRS is below $0.5^{\circ}/hr$. The results of FMS test shows the fact that AHRS provides the measurement with $0.5^{\circ}/hr$ error during 5 minutes operation time. These results of performance evaluation tests showed that the developed AHRS provides attitude information which error of roll and pitch are below $1^{\circ}$ and the error of yaw is below $5^{\circ}$ and satisfies the required specification. It is expected that developed AHRS can provide the precise attitude measurement under sea trial with real AUV.

Spatial-Temporal Patterns and Recent Changes of Tropical Night Phenomenon in South Korea (우리나라 열대야 현상 발생의 시.공간적 특징과 최근의 변화)

  • This study examines relationships between climatic factors and spatial-temporal patterns and recent changes of tropical night phenomenon(TN) occurring through nighttime stages in South Korea. Frequencies of daily TN at different times of night are extracted from long term(1973-2004) 6 hourly nighttime(9PM and 3AM) temperature and daily minimum temperature data at 61 weather stations. Temporally, the occurrences of TN are more pronounced in the evening(9PM) and during the Changma Break period(late July - early August). Spatially, the TNs in the evening frequently occur in the urbanized inland cities at low latitudes due to urban heat islands, whereas the TNs in the middle of night(3AM) or at dawn frequently appeared along the coastal areas within 30km from ocean due to the thermal inertia of ocean. By contrast, the evening(dawn) TN is not seen in the highlands whose elevation is greater than 800m(300m) along the Taebaek and Sobaek mountain ridges due to temperature lapse rates with height Correlation and multivariate regression analyses reveal that the impacts of human or physical climatic factors, such as latitude, elevation, proximity to ocean, and population density, are diverse on the frequencies of TN according to nighttime stages. Recent temporal changes of the late Changma period and intensified urbanization during the 1990s have increased the occurances of TN in urban areas. Therefore, strategies to mitigate the increasing urban TN should be prepared in the near future.

Numerical Simulation of Residual Currents and tow Salinity Dispersions by Changjiang Discharge in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea (황해 및 동중국해에서 양쯔강의 담수유입량 변동에 따른 잔차류 및 저염분 확산 수치모의)

  • A three-dimensional hydrodynamic model with the fine grid is applied to simulate the barotropic tides, tidal currents, residual currents and salinity dispersions in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. Data inputs include seasonal hydrography, mean wind and river input, and oceanic tides. Computed tidal distributions of four major tides($M_2,\;S_2,\;K_1$ and $O_1$) are presented and results are in good agreement with the observations in the domain. The model reproduces well the tidal charts. The tidal residual current is relatively strong around west coast of Korea including the Cheju Island and southern coast of China. The current by $M_2$ has a maximum speed of 10 cm/s in the vicinity of Cheju Island with a anti-clockwise circulation in the Yellow Sea. General tendency of the current, however, is to flow eastward in the South Sea. Surface residual current simulated with $M_2$ and with $M_2+S_2+K_1+O_1$ tidal forcing shows slightly different patterns in the East China Sea. The model shows that the southerly wind reduces the southward current created by freshwater discharge. In summer during high runoff(mean discharge about $50,000\;m^3/s$ of Yangtze), low salinity plume-like structure(with S < 30.0 psu) extending some 160 km toward the northeast and Changjiang Diluted Water(CDW), below salinity 26 psu, was found within about 95 km. The offshore dispersion of the Changjiang outflow water is enhanced by the prevailing southerly wind. It is estimated that the inertia of the river discharge cannot exclusively reach the around sea of Cheju Island. It is noted that spatial and temporal distribution of salinity and the other materials are controlled by mixture of Changjiang discharge, prevailing wind, advection by flowing warm current and tidal current.

Load and Structural Analyses of Composite Micro Aerial Vehicle (복합재료 초소형 비행체의 하중 및 구조해석)

  • Most analyses and researches on Micro Aerial Vehicle(MAV) have focused upon propulsion, automatic control, aerodynamic configuration in low Reynolds number region, and miniaturization of telemetric parts. In the present study, a structural concept for MAV is designed by using the composite material suitable for light flight structures. In order to study the load path and stress state of the MAV, the load and structural analyses are simultaneously performed by the aeroelasticity module of MSC/NASTRAN. The stability derivatives of the MAV are obtained for three symmetric, two antisymmetric, and four unsymmetric maneuvering conditions. Although the aerodynamic theory in MSC/NASTRAN could not be proper for MAV analysis, it provides an traditional and effective tool for trim and load analyses and may be corrected with the results by more accurate theory or test. The results show that the inertial load due to payloads has a more effect on stress rather than the aerodynamic load.
