  • Recently, the land area for many people has been limited because of industrialization and modernization in Korea. The large-scale constructions like the reclamation development projects have been progressed to resolve this problem mentioned above. Therefore, as many of the useful construction materials as possible are needed to perform the largescale construction projects. Many studies for the utilization of pond ash which has a similar characteristic of sand have been conducted and there has been often occurred many structural problems on roadbed in winter. Therefore, the characteristics of the freezing and thawing for Controlled Low-Strength Material(CLSM) using pond ash were analyzed and evaluated by unconfined compressive strength test and mass loss test in this study. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that new CLSM using pond ash with cement(8.2% by weight) was able to stand for the freezing and thawing behavior and was satisfied with the standard of Portland Cement Association.

  • This study introduces a densification technique of controlled low strength materials (CLSM) made with coal ashes by pump discharge pressure. Based on a small-scale laboratory test results, unit weight of CLSM around discharge pipe is greater than that of relatively some distant area from discharge pipe. It is also found that densification of CLSM depends on not only mixture rate of pond ash but also fly ash and location of discharge pipe.

  • Unconfined compressive strength tests were performed to evaluate curing characteristics of controlled low strength material(CLSM) made with coal ashes. It is found that unconfined compressive strength normalized by curing times, increases as decreasing the water contents of CLSM particularly during first three days. Dynamic cone penetrometer tests were also carried out to evaluate cost-effective CLSM lump strength characteristics with time. It takes around 10 days to reach target strength, 500kPa (penetration rate, 20mm/blow). Curing rate significantly decreases after 10 days elapsed regardless of CLSM formulation.

  • This paper presented the strength and environmental characteristics of reclaimed-ground filled with controlled low-strength materials (CLSM) made of coal ash, small amounts of cement, and water in a reclamation site and evaluated the possibility of the use of coal ash on reclamation materials for beneficial use. Three-month period of SPT, CPT, environmental effects evaluation etc. were conducted. N values and cone resistances in ground filled with CLSM were greater than or similar to those in dredging sand. In case of land filled with coal ash except cement these values were lower than those in dredging sand. The results of soil and seawater pollution were lower than test criteria without high pH. Also the values of PH test were measured between pH 5.0~9.0, the criteria of industrial water in the Law for the Underground Water of Korea.

  • CLSM (Controlled Low Strength Material) using coal ash, which has the advantages of self-leveling, self-compacting, flowability, easy re-excavation, has been developed. In this study, CLSM additionally mixed with foaming agent for structural backfill material, aimed at lightness of materials, was developed called light-weight foamed CLSM. As the basic study of this material, to determine the optimum final mixing time and dilution ratio of existing light-weight foamed CLSM, flow, slurry unit weight and unconfined compressive strength test according to each impact factor were performed at the standard mix proportion. As the results of tests, CASE N (Final mixing time 4 min, dilution ratio 2%), CASE O (Final mixing time 3 min, foam agents ratio 3%, dilution ratio 2%) were satisfied with the standard of flow test (above 20cm), slurry unit weight test (12~15 $kN/m^3$) and unconfined compressive strength test (800 kPa~1200 kPa). These results will indicate the standard optimum final mixing time and dilution ratio of light-weight foamed CLSM for structural backfill.

  • Controlled low strength material (CLSM) is a flowable mixture and does not need to be compacted. It is produced by mixing portland cement, fly ash, fine aggregates, water and chemical admixtures. Sand is the most commonly used fine aggregates in the conventional CLSM, but it is getting more and more difficult to obtain sand in Korea. In this study, the characteristics of unconfined compressive strength, flow and applicability of a new CLSM that is produced by mixing of pond ash, fly ash, water, cement are examined. An unconfined compressive strength satisfies the standard unconfined compressive strength (0.5~1.0 MPa) were obtained when the mixture ratio of pond ash and fly ash is 30:70~70:30, cement ratio is 3.0~5.0%, and water content is 31~34%. The results of flow test indicate that the mixture ratio of pond ash and fly ash which satisfy the standard How value (0.2 m) is 30:70~70:30.

  • Controlled low strength material(CLSM) is produced by mixing portland cement, fine aggregates, water and chemical admixtures. Sand is the most commonly used as the fine aggregates in the conventional CLSM. It is getting more and more difficult to obtain sand in Korea so it is required that the alternative materials be developed as the replacement of sand. Since the engineering characteristics of coal ash are similar to the sand, it becomes necessary to examine the application of the coal ash as the alternative material for CLSM and as the environment-friendly material. When the results meet the optimum pH level that plants can live, it can be expanded the scale of application of the study on the plant as the important field. This study was subjected to present the method to reduce the pH range of CLSM to a suitable condition that plants can survive. To verify this method, the care of neutralization was conducted by immersing the specimen to Ammonium monohydrogen phosphate. Before curing and neutralization, the maximum pH of developmental CLSM is approximately 11. However, the pH value of developmental CLSM has under 9.5 after peaceful curing and neutralization management.

  • With the increase in the application of CLSM using coal ash, we performed a basic research on CLSM material, laying focus on the correlation between compressive strength and unit weight of lightweight foamed CLSM. The unconfined compression strength is a criterion for the judgment of the possibility of re-excavation and an important factor determining the economy, efficiency, and excavation character. However, to know the quantitative compression strength value takes a certain amount of time, because the applicability of unconfined compression strength of CLSM is judged by the standard of 28days. Therefore, in this study the relation between compressive strength and unit weight (foam slurry unit weight, apparent unit weight) is analyzed focusing on lightweight foamed CLSM. We also suggested a formula which can easily predict the 28-day compressive strength only using unit weight value without the need to cure the slurry for 28 days.
