  • This study is to design an effective fall-prevention nursing program. Researchers investigated the current condition and risk factors for falls in the small-medium sized rehabilitation hospital with descriptive research. We conducted integrative literature review to reflect the current approach of fall-prevention nursing program. We found that the risk factors for falls are related to the characteristics of clinical setting of the hospital. We suggested the nursing intervention with applying fall risk assessment scale that is sensitive to the elderly population and the intervention that shows maximum effect. In conclusion, this study proposed the way of selecting an effective fall-prevention nursing program based on a clinical setting and prospective of its application. This will contribute to the improvement in nursing practice with the critical view in hospital fall.

Method: A one group pre-test and post-test quasi-experimental design was used. Thirty patients participated in a day care rehabilitation program and 9% of those were unable to complete the 16 weeks program due to absence. The physiotherapist, occupational therapist, and clinical psychologist offered the day care rehabilitation program, 5 times a week for 16 weeks. Outcome measures included physical and emotional function. Results: The program participants had significantly greater motor function (t=-2.85, p=.008) and activity of daily living (t=-5.34, p<.001), and lower depression (t=5.20, p<.001), state anxiety (t=4.71, p<.001), and trait anxiety (t=4.40, p<.001). Conclusion: The nurse managed day care rehabilitation program significantly improved physical and emotional function in patients with job-related injuries. The program should be further tested in a larger sample to validate the findings.

Data were collected from February 22 to March 20, 2016 using self-administered questionares and the data from 216 participants were analyzed using SPSS WIN 21.0 program(SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). The results of this study were as follows: the mean self-esteem was 3.09/5, rehabilitation motivation was 3.60/5, and quality of life was 2.95/5. Sex, age, education, caregiver, occupation, duration after attack, the degree of disability(dependence), and cognitive function were significantly associated with quality of life. There was positive correlation between quality of life and self-esteem(r=.45, p<.001) and there was positive correlation between quality of life and rehabilitation motivation(r=.27, p<.001). Variables such as self-esteem, duration after attack, the degree of disability(dependence), and cognitive function explained 43.6%(F=14.87 p=<.001) of the variance in quality of life in model 3. Consequently, it is needed to develop and apply nursing intervention and programs for improving self-esteem during rehabilitation in order to improve quality of life of stroke patients.
