  • In this paper, the total procedure for composite laminate mechanical joint (ASTM D5961 Proc. A, B) from fixture design to test analysis was showed. Composite laminate mechanical joints were analyzed using the FEM(Finite Element Method) and compared to test results. A progressive failure analysis was applied to FEM to analyze the failure behavior of test specimens. Three failure theories - maximum stress, maximum strain, and Tsai-Wu were applied to FEM to predict test failure load. General parameters for composite laminate joints were reviewed and the differences of bearing strength were compared with major parameters.

  • There were huge damages of human beings and their properties in many areas of the basin of the Nak-Dong river by the unusual weather and the localized downpour recently. In this research against disasters, we want to know strength of the cemented sand that is mixed with cement and poor-graded sand, to estimate CSG(Cemented Sand and Gravel) method used coffer dam in Japan, which is the materials of riverbed in the basin of the Nak-Dong river for levee's construction. For that, we want to provide the fundamental data which need in the examination of adaptation of levee's material, design and analysis by investigating compressive strength by curing period and cement content, elastic modulus and stress by transformation from compaction test, CBR test, unconfined compression test and triaxial compression test as changing cement content from 2% to 8% at two sites in the basin of the Nak-Dong river.

  • The study was performed to study the effects of strain rate on acoustics emission( AE) during bulging test in corrosive environmentsynthetic sea water. The strain rates used were in the range $4 \times 10^{-6}S^{-1}$ to $1 \times 10^{-4} \times S^{-1}$ and the parameters used to evaluate AE signal characteristics were AE hit and amplitude. It can be observed that the cumulative AE hit and average amplitude during fracture process increase highly at decreasing strain rates while the equivalent fracture strain and the crack length of circumferencial direction become decrease. The peak point of AE signal characteristic parameters approach to the first half of test. When the average amplitude per unit equivalent fracture strain was above 20dB, it was definitly observed stress corrosion cracking phenomena. Additional, we knew that the AE test had the possibility to evaluate SCC susceptibility with various strain rates.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites have high specific stiffness and high specific strength. Therefore, they are increasingly being use, instead of conventional metallic materials in the aviation and automobile industries, where there is a strong demand for lightweight materials. In aircraft, the fuselage is exposed to severe conditions of high temperatures and high humidity. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the strength of CFRP composites under real conditions from the viewpoint of aircraft safety. In this study, CFRP specimens were immersed in distilled water at $75^{\circ}C$ for a long time. Then, tensile tests were performed on these specimens, and the fracture characteristics of the fractured surfaces were analyzed using SEM. A fatigue test was performed on specimens immersed for 300 days with R=0.1, and it was confirmed that the fatigue life deteriorated in immersed specimens compared to specimens that were not immersed.

  • Test equipment was designed and manufactured to evaluate thermal reaction characteristic of internal insulators of solid rocket motor. Test is allowed up to chamber pressure 2,500 psi, burn-time 40 s. It is possible to observe and to compare thermal reaction characteristic for a few materials simultaneously, under the condition that the ablation occurs. In efficient average chamber pressure 878 psi, efficient burn-time 10.7 s and gas velocity 100 m/s, test was executed for confirming safety of equipment, being 4 test materials inserted simultaneously. Basic data for understanding thermal characteristic of internal insulator, that is, pressure-time curve, temperature-time curve in the test sample, and thermal destruction depth of test samples was gained successfully.

  • In this paper, strength and leaching characteristics of water sludge-added lightweight soils(WALS) considering reinforcing materials(waste fishing net, glue treated waste fishing net and geogrid) and layer(1 or 2 layer) were investigated using unconfined compression test and leaching test. Several specimens of water sludge-added lightweight soil consisted of water sludge, cement, and bottom ash were prepared according to flowability. Reinforcing material added into these specimens were waste fishing net and geogrid. A glue treated waste fishing net was also added in order to increase interlocking between soil mixture and waste fishing net. Strength increased in the order of WALS reinforced by waste fishing net, glue treated waste fishing net, and geogrid. Strength of specimen with double layer-reinforcing material was greater than that of specimen with single layer reinforcing material. Leaching result of WALS was also satisfied with standard of ministry of environment.

  • The design, construction and management of underground facilities as infrastructure of nation should be properly carried out. One of reasons for underground facilitie's failure is a non-proper construction of backfill materials. This is common for circular underground pipes. A non-proper compaction is the cause of settlement and decrease of performance of underground facilities. The use of controlled low strength materials is an alternative to reduce the couple of failure problems. The flowability, self-cementation, and non-compaction are the major advantages to use the controlled low strength materials. In this research, couple of recycled materials, such as in-situ soil, water-treatment sludge, and crumb rubbers, were adopted. The basic properties of each materials were determined according to KS or ASTM. Also, couple of laboratory tests were carried out to get the design parameters for geotechnical and roadway area.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the applicability of cement-based materials for green soil which is a soil for promoting plant growth. The results show that the shear strength of the green soil mixed with gypsum cement (No.3) was low, but the hardness (23.6mm) and pH value (7.4) was most suitable for the vegetation environment. In addition, the initial vegetation germination of green soil, which improved performance by adding a moisturizer, was slower than that of general green soil, and the conductivity value tended to be slightly higher. On the other hand, the slope adhesion of advanced green soil was high, and it was found that the plant growth rate and the regeneration capacity were superior after time passed.

  • This study analyzes the applicability of limit state design method on bridge evaluation by considering the experiment of the existing bridge. The test strength of the member is obtained from the PSC beam bridge experiment. The test strength is compared with the calculated strength obtained from the statistical characteristics of material test strength and the two values are almost the same. The response modification factor and dynamic impact factor are obtained from the vehicle loading test. The rating factor is calculated by applying limit state design method as well as current evaluation method and the results are compared. The reliability index of the test bridge is calculated by using the statistical properties of the member strength obtained from material test and simulation. When the statistical properties of the PSC beam tested in this study are applied, the reliability index with a larger value was obtained than the reliability index obtained with the statistical properties of the design code.

  • In the case of composite material, a variety of characteristics were expressed depending on the materials that were composed of. In this study, the materials showing non-linear shear behavior were investigated among FRP composite. Each specimen was designed and analyzed according to ASTM D4255 method: regulations on the 2-rail. The dependent variables included in this experiment were a variety of fiber, fiber volume ratio, fiber array direction, temperature, material homogeneity. For determination of characteristics based on the fiber array, fiber array direction of 0, 30, 45, and 60 degrees were selected for test specimen. Temperature of 25, 40, 60, and $80^{\circ}C$ were considered for investigation of FRP materials'shear behavior based on the external temperature. Nonlinear shear behavior was observed throughout the FRP composite material in this study. Also, using vinyl ester resins, high fiber volume ratio, and fiber array direction of 45 degree appeared to show the most prominent nonlinear shear behavior. As for the findings related to the temperature change, non-linear behavior was decreased as the external temperature increased. For factory manufactured product, non-linear behavior was relatively at parity in comparison to the behavior found in the hand lay-up FRP composite specimen.
