This study analyzed the raw data titled social welfare needs of residents of Busan Metropolitan City surveyed in 2005. Within the data, 1,673 households were selected in which at least one senior citizen aged 65 and over lived together. Questionnaires from in each household were analyzed. Research findings indicate that 80% of the respondents intend to live in their home rather than in residential institutions and that the elderly without adult children(55.2%) have less intention for living in their home than the elderly without their spouse(76.4%). Their intention-related factors were the presence of adult children, recognition on community resources for the elderly and perceived number of chronic diseases, when they were presumed to be healthy. When they were presumably weak or ill, socio-economic factors such as home ownership and welfare recipience were found to be more influential factors than family-related variables. The elderly who intended to live in home rather than to live in a residential institution were less likely to use social services in community than expected. Policy and practice implications were suggested on the basis of the findings.

  • The authors developed 28 needs assessment tools for integrated assessment centered on needs, which is the core element in care management for the elderly in home. Also, the authors collected the assessment data of 676 elderly persons in home from 120 centers under the Korea Association of Senior Welfare Centers by using the needs assessment tools, and finally developed needs extraction algorithm through decision tree analysis in data mining to identify their actual needs and provide social welfare service suitable for such needs. The needs extraction algorithm for 28 needs of the elderly in home are summarized in

. The Need No. 8 "Having need of help in going out" of the decision-making model, for example, was divided into 80.3% of asking for help and 11.4% not asking for help with Appeal No. 23 as a major variable. The need increased by 87.9% when the elderly appealed for help to go out and they had a caregiver but decreased by 47.4% when they had no caregiver. When the elderly asked for help in going out, they had a caregiver, and they needed complete help in cleaning, their need of help in going out was shown as 94.2%. However, seen from their answer that they needed complete help in bathing of ADL even if they did not ask for help in going out, it was found that the need of help in going out sharply increased from 11.4% to 80.0%. On the other hand, when they needed partial help or self-supported in bathing, the potential for them to be classified as asking for help in going out was shown to be low as 7.7%. In the said decision-making model, the number of cases for parent node and child node was designated as 50 and 25, respectively, with level 5 of the maximum tree depth as stopping rule. By this, it was shown that their decision-making was found to be effective as 182.13% for the need "Having need of help in going out". The algorithm presented in this study can be useful as systematic and scientific fundamental data in assessment of needs of the elderly in home.

    • As South Korea has become an aged society, the dementia rate has also been increasing. With the introduction of both de-institutionalization and community care in 2017, the importance of community-based care has increased. Perspectives on dementia have also been shifting from the medical model and social model to the person-centered model. This paper suggests ways to improve dementia service through analyzing the dementia knowledge of care-givers at ADS. The paper includes an FGI with the care-givers who have worked for more than 2 years. Based on such FGI, the paper draws sub-themes from 7 areas. Among the suggestions for improvement are: community-based service with daily routine practice, improving awareness of dementia for co-living, and person-centered service based on individuality and diverseness.

    • The proportion of the aged people in Korea has increased rapidly by more than 7% in 2000. A survey says that the changing rate from the aging society to the aged is the highest among the OECD countries. The prevalence rate of the aged population is on the increase. Chronic diseases such as arthritis and strokes limits their body's functions and activities of daily living. It is necessary that functional training. ADL training and continuous treatment be provided by Physical or Occupational Therapists. Discontinuance of treatment can cause the aged people to be in a bed state. The aged people need a variety of home care services at their convenience. Occupational and Physical therapist should play a major role in providing the rehabilitation-base home care services. Further they are expected to contribute to the extension of health care services such as home care and nursing home programs.
