  • This paper presents the flow characteristics of a ball valve used for a gas pipeline. Understanding of the internal flow of a ball valve is an important to analyze the physical phenomena of the valve. Present experimental study was performed by IEC 60534-2-3, the international standard for an industrial control valve testing procedure. Pressure measured at upstream and downstream of the valve, flow-rate and gas temperature passing the inside of the gas pipeline were measured with respect to valve opening rates. Throughout the experimental measurement of the ball valve, empirical equation of the pressure drop between the ball valve according to the mass flow rates is successively obtained using a polynomial curve fitting method. In addition, flow coefficient for determining the valve capacity is also analyzed with respect to valve opening rates using the curve fitting method.

  • Hydraulic performance of a micro-bubble pump has been analyzed by numerical simulation and experimental measurements. Flow recirculation apparatus between the pump inlet and outlet reserviors has been adopted to measure pump performance according to flow conditions sequentially. To analyze three-dimensional flow field in the micro-bubble pump, general analysis code, CFX, is employed. SST turbulence model is employed to estimate the eddy viscosity and compared the pump performance to k-${\varepsilon}$ model. Unstructured grids are used to represent a composite grid system including blade, casing and inlet casing. It is found that the numerical model used in the present study is effective to evaluate the pump performance. From the numerical simulation, low velocity region due to pressure loss is decreased where pump efficiency has maximum value. Detailed flow field inside the micro-bubble pump is also analyzed and compared.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the gas leakage for a 30-inch ball valve. The ball valve was designed and manufactured for a natural gas transportation through a long-distance pipeline mainly installed in the permafrost region. The gas leakage assessment is based on the pressure testing criteria of international standards. Pressure conditions of the gas leakage test was employed 70 bar, 100 bar, and 110 bar. The amount of the gas leakage at each pressure condition was small and had a value under the pressure testing criteria, ISO 5208. Gas leakage with respect to the test pressure was predicted by the polynomial curve fitting using the experimental results. It is found that the gas leakage rate according to the pressure is proportion to a second order curve.

  • This paper describes thermal flow characteristics in various pipelines: straight pipeline and curved pipeline. In the permafrost area, pipelines are exposed to an extremely low temperature ($-40^{\circ}C$). In this situation, three-dimensional flow analysis should be analyzed to investigate thermal effects such as pressure drop, temperature change, velocity deficit and distribution change of liquid droplet of internal fluid. In this paper, multi-phase and multi-species analysis was introduced to analyze the flow characteristics of permafrost pipelines on the vertical support members above ground.

  • The purpose of the present study is to analyze and evaluate the performance of a small Darrieus wind turbine installed at the Urumsil region of Deokjeok-do Island in the west of South Korea 50 km away from Incheon. This place has no government electricity so alternate resources of energy needed to be installed there. For this purpose a small Darrieus wind turbine with the capacity of 1.5 kW was developed and installed at the site. The experimental power output of the wind turbine is less than the designed power at the same values of wind speed. This power loss is mainly due to the highly unsteady nature wind of sudden changes in magnitude of wind speed and wind angle. The results of current study can be used to make a future power generation plan for Deokjeok-do and other nearby small islands.

  • This paper describes unsteady internal flow characteristics of a cathode air blower, used for the 1 kW fuel cell system. The cathode air blower considered in the present study is a diaphragm type blower. To analyze the flow field inside the diaphragm cavity, compressible unsteady numerical simulation is performed. Moving mesh system is applied to the numerical analysis for describing the volume change of the diaphragm cavity in time. Throughout a numerical simulation by modeling the inlet and outlet valves in a diaphragm cavity, unsteady nature of an internal flow is successfully analyzed. Variations of mass flow rate, force and pressure on the lower moving plate of a diaphragm cavity are evaluated in time. The computed mass flow rate at the same pressure and rotating frequency of a motor has a maximum of 5 percent error with the experimental data. It is found that flow pattern at the suction process is more complex compared to that at the discharge process. Unsteady nature of internal flow in the cathode air blower is analyzed in detail.

  • This paper presents annual energy production (AEP) by a 1.5kW wind turbine due to be installed in Deokjeok-Do island. Local wind data is determined by geometric shape of Deokjeok-Do island and annual wind data from Korea Institute of Energy Research at three places considered to be installed the wind turbine. Numerical simulation using WindSim is performed to obtain flow pattern for the whole island. The length of each computation grid is 40 m, and k-e turbulence model is imposed. AEP is determined by the power curve of the wind turbine and the local wind data obtained from numerical simulation. To capture the more detailed flow pattern at the specific local region, Urumsil-maul inside the island, fine mesh having the grid length of 10m is evaluated. It is noted that the input data for numerical simulation to the local region is used the wind data obtained by the numerical results for the whole island. From the numerical analysis, it is found that a local AEP at the Urumsil-maul has almost same value of 1.72 MWh regardless the grid resolutions used in the present calculation. It is noted that relatively fine mesh used for local region is effective to understand the flow pattern clearly.

  • The present study describes flow induced noise generated from a ball valve used for a gas pipeline. Noise generation from a ball valve mainly induces by interference between unstable(or fluctuating) leakage flow and pipe wall when the ball valve is working closed or opened. To measure the positions of the noise source and the amplitude of noise with respect to measuring frequencies, a commercial acoustic camera is introduced. Noise characteristics generated by the ball valve have been performed by four valve opening rates: 30, 50, 70 and 100 percents. It is noted that 100 percent opening rate means that the valve is fully opened. Throughout the experimental measurements using the acoustic camera, the location of the noise source and the noise amplitude with respect to the frequencies for the test ball valve are clearly evaluated. It is found that the dominant frequencies come from the fluctuating flow at the downstream of the ball valve for four opening rates are observed between 3,000Hz and 3,200Hz. Maximum noise amplitude comes from the ball valve reaches 75dB at the valve opening rate of 50 percent.

  • Turbo blowers are mainly used in refuse collection systems. We discuss blower performance in relation to the angle of the inlet vane installed at the upstream of the blower. The flow characteristics of the components are analyzed by three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis and compared to experimental results. A two-stage serially connected turbo blower is introduced to analyze the performance experimentally. Throughout the experimental measurements and the numerical simulation, the distorted inlet velocity generated in the small vane angle reduces the performance of the blower, because of the local leading-edge separation and the resulting non-uniform blade loading. We also perform a detailed flow analysis using the results obtained in the numerical simulation.

In this situation, three-dimensional flow analysis should be analyzed to investigate thermal effects such as pressure drop, temperature change, velocity deficit and distribution change of liquid droplet of internal fluid.
