  • The purpose of this research was to examine the attitudes and behavior of physical therapy students toward the disabled. The subjects were 776 students at 6 cities and provinces nationwide with physical therapy. Self-reported questionnaires were used to collect data from 800, and 776 returned forms was analyzed using SPSS 21.0 ver. As a summary of the results, first, there was a more positive significant difference in the behavior toward disabilities in men than women; the higher grade they were, the more negative the significant difference in attitude toward the disabilities. Second, the subjects with disabled family members or friends had a positive attitude and behavior. Third, there was no difference as to whether to take classes related to disabilities, and there was a positive significant difference in the students who took voluntary service. Based on these results, interactions with disabled people affect the positive attitudes and behaviors toward disabilities. In addition, implications of the important roles of education curricula to take direct experience are suggested.

  • The spectrum of physically challenged patients who visit to a dental clinic for treatments are diverse: from ones of mild disabilities, who lead their lives in a similar way of ordinary people, to others who suffer from diseases that are difficult to be diagnosed, and need medical expertise due to systemic care or special techniques and instruments because of behavior management and difficulty of treatments. The patient in this case was 25-year-old autistic male patient who visited the clinic on account of overall treatment for multiple carious lesions. He could perform normal daily life to some degree under the care of a guardian. This case report describes predicaments of making a treatment plan resulted from lack of information about disabled patients, and difficulties of proceeding treatment procedures under general anesthesia. It is considered that sufficient consultation and history taking are needed before treatment for disabled patients.

  • Current Serious games for medical treatment and rehabilitation are not usually suitable for actual patients because of the inconvenient user interfaces. The disabled or rehabilitants have limited ability to control the game contents. Therefore, it is very important to develop proper interfaces for such serious games. In this paper, we propose a serious game that utilizes the Nintendo wiimote controller and pattern recognition techniques. We also show the possibility of such contents for the future application to actual rehabilitation.

  • Special Health Care Needs (SHCN) patients need regular follow-up because of high incidence and severity of oral disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dental treatment outcomes of SHCN patients according to follow-up patterns. SHCN patients who were treated under general anesthesia (GA) at Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital from 2006 to 2014 were included in this study. The final samples comprised of 53 patients that were divided into regular (33 patients) and irregular (20 patients) follow-up groups according to their follow-up patterns. The type of dental treatment after GA during the follow-up periods were compared. In the irregular group, aggressive treatment including endodontic, prosthetic treatment, and extraction were predominant, compared with the regular group (p < 0.05). In addition, all patients who had dental treatment under GA in follow-up periods were in the irregular group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the results of this study provide the importance of regular follow-ups with SHCN patients and emphasize responsibilities of dentists for educating patients and their guardians.
