Changes of Chemical Components during Storage in Sweet Potato Produced at Two Locations (산지가 다른 고구마 품종의 저장중 화학성분 변화)

  • This experiment was conducted to obtain the basic information of the major chemical components for breeding high quality varieties of sweet potatoes [Ipomoea batatas (L) Lamk]. Six recommended varieties were cultivated at the experimental plots of Hwasung and Suwon in 1992. Starch value. glucose, fructose, maltose, and sucrose content were analyzed with time intervals during storage period. Starch value of Shinyulmi was the highest among six varieties in both locations. Glucose and fructose contents were appeared wide variations in varieties and locations. Shinyulmi showed the highest maltose content and Yulmi had the highest sucrose content in two locations. Total sugar contents were higher in Shinyulmi and Yulmi. Starch value, glucose, fructose, maltose, and sucrose content were stable during storage period, however these were differed between locations.

Relationships between Lodging and Root Characteristics of Soy bean Plants (대두의 도복과 근부특성과의 관계)

  • The field experiment was carried out in order to find out the factors affecting lodging of Korean soybean varieties. Among the variety groups which were grown under the same cultural conditions, 25 Korean local varieties were selected by 5 lodging degree, and investigated their root characteristics in relation to lodging. The results obtained were as follows; There were no significant relationships between root dry weight, number of primary roots, number of adventitious roots and lodging. There also were no clear relationships between shoot/root weight ratio and lodging. However, it was recognized that the shoot weight/number of thick roots was highly related to soybean lodging. The susceptible varieties to lodging showed less shoot/thick root ratio.

  • New malting barley variety" Doosan #8" is a short culm, lodging registance, high tillering, good quality and high yielding variety. This variety was developed from the cross 'Tai Chung 2 rowed barley #1 \times Deba abed' made in 1972 at Sacheon Malting Barley Experiment station, Doo San Fann's Co. This variety was determined to recommend to the all malting barley production areas in southern part of Korea from 1981. of Korea from 1981.

  • Protein content of Korean native and currently recommended varieties varied from 5.3% to 9.4%. Higher protein content was shown in Indicas than Japonicas and generally in the earlier varieties than in the latter ones. Additional application of nitrogen significantly increased the protein content, and varietal difference in this response was noticed. Delayed harvesting reduced protein content and denser planting induced higher protein content in the brown rice.

  • Sink (grain)-filling rates of IR667 line (Suwon 213 and 214) and local leading varieties (Jinheung and Paldal) were investigated in relation to sink-source ratio, sink-source distance, forms of photosynthates, and weather factors. The results are as follows. 1. IR667 line have higher maximum filling rate (g. grain/day. ear) and shorter duration to reach maximum filling rate than local varieties. The curve pattern of sink-filling rate was high and steep type in IR667 line and low and broad type in local varieties. 2. Weather factors seem to give little effect on the curve pattern of sink-filling rate. 3. The functional sink-source distance (actual sink-source distance multiplied by the contribution rate of leaf for grain production) was shorter in upper leaves (flag and 2nd leaf) for IR667 line, the upper leaf-dependent type in grain production, and was longer in lower leaves (3rd and 4th) for local varieties, the lower leaf-dependent type. Specially short first internode from top may contribute to the upper leaf depencency of IR667 line. 4. According to free sugar-starch ratio (sugar/starch) in the culm and leaf sheath IR667 line could be classified as the high sugar type and the local varieties as the high starch type. The ratio of transportable form (sugar) to non transportable photosynthate (starch) seems to relate with sink-filling rate. And high sugar type is expected to have higher efficiency for grain production in view of energy balance. 5. A hypothesis that the higher in the uniformity within the series of productive structure the more efficient in grain production is proposed and discussed in relation to productivity. 6. According to the pattern of percent nutrient retention of each leaf blade IR667 showed the central retention type and Jinheung showed the apical retention type and each retention type appears to be a cause of each canopy conservation pattern. 7. From the content and percent distribution of nutrient in various organ IR667 could be classified as the leaf sheath dominant type and Jinheung as the leaf blade dominant type. 8. The fact that the greater the percent translocation of nutrient into grain the greater the percent nutrient retention in leaf blade was held between nitrogen and phosphorus within a variety and between varieties within a nutrient (N, P or K).

Growth Characteristics and Yield Potentials of Soybeans in Upland and Paddy Field (전과 답에서의 콩 생육특성과 수량성)

  • To obtain the basic information necessary for the development of soybean varieties well adaptable to upland-paddy field rotational croppings, the difference of growth characteristics between upland and paddy-field including yield potentials of current recommending soybean varieties were evaluated. The growth characteristics, both above and under-ground, which were measured at flowering stage were generally greater in paddy-field but the number of root nodules was much greater in upland, thus the artificial inoculation was practically recommended for soybean growing in paddy-fields. Mean seed yield was generally higher in paddy-fields than in upland. All soybean varieties showed higher seed yield in the early planting date, April 20, were somewhat susceptible to soybean mosaic virus(SMV), thus they could be escaped from the disasterous endemic necrotic soybean mosaic virus(SMV-N). Soybean varieties showed over 4.0 tons/ha seed yield in the paddy-field were Williams 79, Union, SS77053, and Namhaekong. At the same time, Jangyeobkong and Danyeobkong were the most stable soybean varieties among the tested soybean varieties with less than 10% of coefficient variation values in all planting dates in paddy fields. Compared with Hwangkeumkong which is most widely being cultivated on farmer's fields, soybean varieties showed high yields in paddy-field were higher in plant height, less in the number of branches, and more in the number of nodes on main stem. At the same time, they had medium seed size which would bring the good germination and stands. Disease resistance especially for necrotic soybean mosaic virus was also one of the most decisive factors in seed yields for the early planted soybeans.
