On the Noise Robustness of Multilayer Perceptrons (다층퍼셉트론의 잡음 강건성)

  • In this paper, we analysize the noise robustness of MLPs(Multilayer perceptrons). Also, as a preprocessing stage of MLPs to improve noise robustness, we consider the ICA(independent component analysis) and PCA(principle component analysis). After analyzing the noise redunction effect using PCA or ICA, we verify the noise robustness of MLPs through handwritten-digit recognition simulations.

  • Content-based video matching is measuring a similarity of video signature compared to the original clip and copies of media. Specially, it is very important to match the exact frame position, but it depends on frame rate, noise condition and compression format of video. Ordinal signature shows good performance than other video signatures under normal condition but the previous didn't try to find the uniqueness and robustness. Hua et al. performed a uniqueness test under compressed in different formats or frame size. However, they used other compression format image instead of noise in robustness test. This paper proposes robustness test method using several noise models and analyzes the performance of robustness and uniqueness.

  • In this paper, we analyse the noise robustness of MLPs(Multilayer perceptrons) through deriving the probability density function(p.d.f.) of output nodes with additive input noises and the misclassification ratio with the integral form of the p.d.f. functions. Also, we propose linear preprocessing methods to improve the noise robustness. As a preprocessing stage of MLPs, we consider ICA(independent component analysis) and PCA(principle component analysis). After analyzing the noise reduction effect using PCA or ICA in the viewpoints of SNR(Singal-to-Noise Ratio), we verify the preprocessing effects through the simulations of handwritten-digit recognition problems.

  • In this paper, robust structural design of the PEMFC stack gasket is pursued with Taguchi method by considering the noise factor in stack assembly. The study of noise problem in stacking is required to secure the safety and performance improvement of PEMFC stack. The design parameters in the Taguchi method are selected so that the structural responses are insensitive to the noise factors. In the gasket analysis, a Mooney-Rivlin strain energy function is used to consider hyperelasticity between load and displacement. By uni-axial and equi-biaxial tension tests of the gasket, the material properties are determined for the use in robust design of PEMFC gasket. The robust design of the PEMFC stack may provide structural reliability.

  • The performance of a system can be affected by the variance of noise factors, which arise owing to uncertainties of the material properties and environmental factors acting on the system. For robust design optimization of the system performance, it is necessary to minimize the effect of the variance of the noise factors that are impossible to control. However, present robust design techniques consider the variation of design factors, and not the noise factors, as being important. Furthermore, it is necessary to assume a normal distribution; however, a normal distribution is often not suitable to estimate the variations. In this study, a robust design technique is proposed to consider the variation of noise factors that are estimated as non-normal distributions in a real experiment. As an example of an engineering problem, a deep-sea manganese nodule miner tracked vehicle is used to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method.

Robustness Evaluation of GaN Low-Noise Amplifier in Ka-band (Ka-대역 GaN 저잡음 증폭기의 강건성 평가)

  • Due to high power capabilities and high linearity of GaN devices, GaN Low-Noise Amplifiers (LNAs) without a limiter can be implemented in order to improve noise figure and reduce chip area in radar receivers. In this paper, a GaN LNA is presented for Ka-band radar receivers. The designed LNA was realized in a 150-nm GaN HEMT process and measurement results show that the voltage gain of >23 dB and the noise figure of <6.5 dB including packaging loss in the target frequency range. Under the high-power stress test, measured gain and noise figure of the GaN LNA is degraded after the first stress test, but no more degradation is observed under multiple stress tests. Through post-stress noise and s-parameter measurements, we verified that the GaN LNA is resilient to pulsed input power of ~40 dBm.

  • Blind algorithms based on Information potential of output samples and a set of symbols generated in random order at the receiver go through performance degradation when biased impulsive noise is added to the channel since the cost function composed of information potentials has no variable to deal with biased signal. Aiming at the robustness against biased impulsive noise, we propose, in this paper, a modified information potential, and derived related blind algorithms based on augmented filter structures and a set of random-order symbols. From the simulation results of blind equalization for multipath channels, the blind algorithm based on the proposed information potential produced superior convergence performance in the environments of strong biased impulsive noise.

  • In this paper, a noise-tolerant generalized symmetry transform(NTGST) is proposed and implemented as a context-free attention operator for efficient detection of multi-object. In contrast to the conventional context-free attention operator based on the GST in which only the magnitude and the symmetry of the pixel pairs are taken into account, the proposed NTGST additionally takes into account the convergence and the divergence of the radial orientation of the intensity gradient of the pixel pair. Thus, the proposed attention operator can easily detect multiple objects out of the noisy and complex backgrounded image. Experiments are conducted on various synthetic and real images, and the proposed NTGST is proved to be effective in multi-object detection from the noisy and complex backgrounds.

  • Sound localization algorithm usually adapts three step process: sampling sound signals, estimating time difference of arrival between microphones, estimate location of sound source. To apply this process in indoor environment, sound localization algorithm must be strong enough against reverberant and noisy condition. Additionally, calculation efficiency must be considered in implementing real-time sound localization system. To implement real-time robust sound localization system we adapt four low cost condenser microphones which reduce the cost and total calculation load. And to get TDOA(Time Differences of Arrival) of microphones we adapt GCC-PHAT(Generalized Cross Correlation-Phase Transform) which is robust algorithm to the reverberant and noise environment. The position of sound source was calculated by using iterative least square algorithm which produce highly accurate position data.

  • In this paper, a noise-tolerant generalized symmetry transform(NTGST) is proposed as an effective attention operator for the spot detection in BLU inspection, in which various spots with variable sizes, shapes, gray levels, and low contrast, should be detected from the complex, noisy background with lattice shaped shading. The proposed NTGST takes into account the polarity of convergence and divergence of the radial orientation of the intensity gradient as well as it's magnitude and symmetry, and thereby can detect only the BLU spots from the noisy and lattice shaped shadows of background. Experiments are conducted on the BLU inspection image obtained by CCD camera, and the proposed NTGST is Proved to be effectively used in BLU inspection.
