  • The regular quality assurance (RQA) of X-ray images is essential for maintaining a high accuracy of diagnosis. This study was to evaluate the modulation transfer function (MTF), the noise power spectrum (NPS), and the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) of a computed radiography (CR) system for various periods of use from 2006 to 2015. We measured the pre-sampling MTF using the edge method and RQA 5 based on commission standard international electro-technical commission (IEC). The spatial frequencies corresponding to the 50% MTF for the CR systems in 2006, 2009, 2012 and 2015 were 1.54, 1.14, 1.12, and $1.38mm^{-1}$, respectively and the10% MTF for 2006, 2009, 2012, and 2015 were 2.68, 2.44, 2.44, and $2.46mm^{-1}$, respectively. In the NPS results, the CR systems showed the best noise distribution in 2006, and with the quality of distributions in the order of 2015, 2009, and 2012. At peak DQE and DQE at $1mm^{-1}$, the CR systems showed the best efficiency in 2006, and showed better efficiency in order of 2015, 2009, and 2012. Because the eraser lamp in the CR systems was replaced, the image quality in 2015 was superior to those in 2009 and 2012. This study can be incorporated into used in clinical QA requiring performance and evaluation of the performance of the CR systems.

  • In megavoltage (MV) radiotherapy, delivering the dose to the target volume is important while protecting the surrounding normal tissue. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the modulation transfer function (MTF), the noise power spectrum (NPS), and the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) using an edge block in megavoltage X-ray imaging (MVI). We used an edge block, which consists of tungsten with dimensions of 19 (thickness) ${\times}$ 10 (length) ${\times}$ 1 (width) $cm^3$ and measured the pre-sampling MTF at 6 MV energy. Various radiation therapy (RT) devices such as TrueBeam$^{TM}$ (Varian), BEAMVIEW$^{PLUS}$ (Siemens), iViewGT (Elekta) and Clinac$^{(R)}$iX (Varian) were used. As for MTF results, TrueBeam$^{TM}$(Varian) flattening filter free(FFF) showed the highest values of $0.46mm^{-1}$ and $1.40mm^{-1}$ for MTF 0.5 and 0.1. In NPS, iViewGT (Elekta) showed the lowest noise distribution. In DQE, iViewGT (Elekta) showed the best efficiency at a peak DQE and $1mm^{-1}DQE$ of 0.0026 and 0.00014, respectively. This study could be used not only for traditional QA imaging but also for quantitative MTF, NPS, and DQE measurement for development of an electronic portal imaging device (EPID).

  • White light-emitting diode (WLED) is growing interest in using both illumination and communications. This paper reports visible light communication (VLC) composed of a super bright white light-emitting diode, low cost commercial photo-diode and a Fresnel lens. LED driver is consisted of the power MOSFET and MOSFET driver that switches the LED on and off. The modulation bandwidth of the LED used was determined to be 8 MHz. However, it was possible to communicate up to 1 Mbps under illumination of 500 lx because of the weak signal power and a low spectral sensitivity of the SHF213 as a PIN photodiode. In order to enhance the system bandwidth, the LED light was focused on the PIN photodiode by use of the Fresnel lens. As a result of that, visible light link was operated up to modulation bandwidth of the LED. The signal to noise ratio can be improved by 40 dB using an optical concentration at the receiver.

  • Digital Radiography (DR) has rapidly developed in megavoltage X-ray imaging (MVI). Thus, a very simple and general quality assurance (QA) method is required. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the modulation transfer function (MTF), the noise power spectrum (NPS) and the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) for MVI using general QA method and computed radiography (CR) device. We used tungsten edge block with $19{\times}10{\times}1cm^3$ thickness and 6MV energy. For detector, CR-IP (image plate), CR-IP-lead, the CR-IP-back (lanex TM fast back screen), CR-IP-front (lanex TM fast front screen) were used and pre-sampling MTF was calculated. The MTF of CR-IP-front showed the highest value with 1.10 lp/mm although the CR-IP showed the only 0.70 lp/mm. The best NPS was observed in CR-IP front screen. According to the increase in spatial frequency, our results showed that DQE was approximately 1.0 cycles/mm. The present study demonstrates that the QA method with our home-made edge block can be used to evaluate MTF, NPS and DQE for MVI.

  • This paper introduces a 2.5-Gb/s optical receiver implemented in a standard 1P4M 0.18um CMOS technology for the applications of active optical HDMI cables. The optical receiver consists of a differential transimpedance amplifier(TIA), a five-stage differential limiting amplifier(LA), and an output buffer. The TIA exploits the inverter input configuration with a resistive feedback for low noise and power consumption. It is cascaded by an additional differential amplifier and a DC-balanced buffer to facilitate the following LA design. The LA consists of five gain cells, an output buffer, and an offset cancellation circuit. The proposed optical receiver demonstrates $91dB{\Omega}$ transimpedance gain, 1.55 GHz bandwidth even with the large photodiode capacitance of 320 fF, 16 pA/sqrt(Hz) average noise current spectral density within the bandwidth (corresponding to the optical sensitivity of -21.6 dBm for $10^{-12}$ BER), and 40 mW power dissipation from a single 1.8-V supply. Test chips occupy the area of $1.35{\times}2.46mm^2$ including pads. The optically measured eye-diagrams confirms wide and clear eye-openings for 2.5-Gb/s operations.

  • Steady state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) has been actively studied because of its short training time, relatively higher signal-to-noise ratio, and higher information transfer rate. There are two popular analysis methods for SSVEP signals: power spectral density analysis (PSDA) and canonical correlation analysis (CCA). However, the PSDA is known to be vulnerable to noise due to the use of a single channel. Although conventional CCA is more accurate than PSDA, it may not be appropriate for the real-time SSVEP-based BCI system when it has short time window length because it uses sinusoidal signals as references. Therefore, the two methods are not efficient for the real-time BCI system that requires a short TW and a high recognition accuracy. To overcome this limitation of the conventional methods, this paper proposes a frequency recognition method with a combination of CCA and PSDA using the difference between powers of canonical variables obtained from the results of CCA. Experimental results show that the performance of the combination of CCA and PSDA is better than that of CCA for the case of a short TW.

  • Using passive electric field sensor which operates in non-contact mode, we can measure the electric potential induced from the change of electric charges on a sensor caused by the movement of human body or hands. In this study, we propose a new method, which utilizes PLN induced to the sensor around the moving object, to detect one's hand movement and extract gesture frames from the detected signals. Signals from the EPS sensors include a large amount of power line noise usually existing in the places such as rooms or buildings. Using the fact that the PLN is shielded in part by human access to the sensor, signals caused by motion or hand movement are detected. PLN consists mainly of signals with frequency of 60 Hz and its harmonics. In our proposed method, signals only 120 Hz component in frequency domain are chosen selectively and exclusively utilized for detection of hand movement. We use FFT to measure a spectral-separated frequency signal. The signals obtained from sensors in this way are continued to be compared with the threshold preset in advance. Once motion signals are detected passing throng the threshold, we determine the motion frame based on period between the first threshold passing time and the last one. The motion detection rate of our proposed method was about 90% while the correct frame extraction rate was about 85%. The method like our method, which use PLN signal in order to extract useful data about motion movement from non-contact mode EPS sensors, has been rarely reported or published in recent. This research results can be expected to be useful especially in circumstance of having surrounding PLN.

  • As the number of earthquakes gradually increases on the Korean Peninsula, much research has been actively conducted to detect earthquakes quickly and accurately. Because traditional seismic stations are expensive to install and operate, recent research is currently being conducted to detect earthquakes using low-cost MEMS sensors. In this article, we evaluate how a low-cost MEMS acceleration sensor installed in a smartphone can be used to detect earthquakes. To this end, we installed about 280 smartphones at various locations in Korea to collect acceleration data and then assessed the installed sensors' noise floor through PSD calculation. The noise floor computed from PSD determines the magnitude of the earthquake that the installed MEMS acceleration sensors can detect. For the last few months of real operation, we collected acceleration data from 200 smartphones among 280 installed smartphones and then computed their PSDs. Based on our experiments, the MEMS acceleration sensor installed in the smartphone is capable of observing and detecting earthquakes with a magnitude 3.5 or more occurring within 10km from an epic center. During the last several months of operation, the smartphone acceleration sensor recorded an earthquake of magnitude 3.5 in Miryang on December 30, 2019, and it was confirmed as an earthquake using STA/LTA which is a simple earthquake detection algorithm. The earthquake detection system using MEMS acceleration sensors is expected to be able to detect increasing earthquakes more quickly and accurately.

  • Spectrum sharing between wireless systems becomes a critical issue clue to emerging new technologies and spectrum shortage. Recently, IMT system has been allocated in the same frequency C band (3400-4200MHz) along with FSS services on co-primary basis which means that harmful. interference probability may be inspired. In this paper, to estimate the spectrum sharing between IMT and FSS systems, I propose the minimum separation distances as a sharing criterion of I/N=-10dB using the interference to noise ratio(I/N) received at the reference FSS earth station from IMT multiple base station. Especially, same results imply that I/N values can be greatly reduced with MMO SDMA interference mitigation technique of IMT base station so that FSS and IMT systems can co-exist in the sam e frequency with appropriate separation distance.

  • Sounds based machine fault diagnosis recovers all the studies that aim to detect automatically abnormal sound on machines using the acoustic emission by these machines. Conventional methods that use mathematical models have been found inaccurate because of the complexity of the industry machinery systems and the obvious existence of nonlinear factors such as noises. Therefore, any fault diagnosis issue can be treated as a pattern recognition problem. We propose here an automatic fault diagnosis method of hand drills using discrete wavelet transform(DWT) and pattern recognition techniques such as artificial neural networks(ANN). We first conduct a filtering analysis based on DWT. The power spectral density(PSD) is performed on the wavelet subband except for the highest and lowest low frequency subband. The PSD of the wavelet coefficients are extracted as our features for classifier based on ANN the pattern recognition part. The results show that the proposed method can be effectively used not only to detect defects but also to various automatic diagnosis system based on sound.
