  • Stink bugs do damage on various crops including upland crops and tree fruits. Especially, yellow-brown stink bug (Halyomorpha halys ($St{\aa}l$)) and brown-winged green (Plautia stali) are severely damaged on apple orchard. Using seven insecticides - dinotefuran WP, etofenprox WP, chlorpyrifos WP, cabaryl WP, chlothianidin SC, flonicamid WG, and bifenthrin WG - registered on apple, contact and residual toxicities were tested on both male and female of P. stali and H. halys that preferred apple fruit. Contact toxicity of dinotefuran WP was excellent on male P. stali 48 hours after treatment (HAT) with 96.7% and significant on male Halyomorpha halys 48 HAT with 74.5% but the others had low effect. Contact toxicity on these stink bugs were higher in male than female. All insecticides except flonicamid, residual effects were all effective on both male and female of P. stali, while chlorpyrifos and bifenthrin were showed higher residual toxicity on both male and female of H. halys in laboratory condition. Two insecticides, chlorpyrifos and bifenthrin, were selected for the field test. Bifenthrin have a high residual effect on P. stali until 5 days after treatment, but have a low residual toxicity on H. halys in the field test. Chlorpyrifos showed higher residual toxicity in the laboratory, however, showed low residual efficacy on two species stink bug onto the field.

  • Field experiments were conducted on the cropping system soybean-barley-soybean to investigate the effect of phosphorus and wollastonite application, effective application methods of phosphrus, and their residual effect in a typical Jeju island volcanic ash soil when the fertilizers were applied to the first crop of the three crops sequence. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Response of phosphorus was higher for barley than for soybean. The maximum application rate of phosphate was extimated to be 10-20kg/l0a for cultivation of soybean first crop) and 100kg/l0a for barley (second crop). Barley yield under 100kg/l0a of phosphate was double as compared to the no phosphate plot. 2. With application of 100kg/10a phosphate at the sowing time of soybean, the available phosphate in the soil after harvesting of soybean was increased to 175ppm but decreased to 60 ppm by cultivation of barley (second crop.) On the other hand, the phosphate absorption coefficient was 1,146mg/100g after soybean harvest but increased to 1,764mg/100g after barley harvest. 3. High residual effect was found in the plot to which phosphate applied with compost in the sowing band. 4. Response to wollastonite under heavy application of phosphate was high and residual effect was also great. 5. Response of soybean to wollastonite was higher than that of barley. Application of wollastonite increased the yield of all three crops soybean (first crop) by 30%, barley (second crop) by 12% and soybean (third) by 20%, respectively. Highest yield was obtained from the 1,000kg/10a wollastonite treatment for soybean and 500kg/l0a for barley.

  • In order to establish a optimum level and proper method of fly ash application for soybean cultivation, the successive three years experiment was conducted in the field applied with four application levels of fly ash, 0, 30, 60, 90 MT/ha during the 1991 to 1993. Influence of successive application and residue of fly ash in soil on soybean growth and yield was discussed. Fly ash application had a favorable effect on soybean growth, however over application such as 90 MT/ha caused to turn the color into the brown of young leaf edge and eventually to have necrosis on the leaf. This symptom was prominent under the application of bituminous coal fly ash. In the 1st year cultivation of soybean, the highest yield was obtained at application level of 30 MT/ha. In the 2nd year, application of anthracite fly ash showed the highest yield at 60 MT/ha for successive application and at 90 MT/ha for the 1st year application followed by the 2nd year residue. Application of bituminous coal fly ash showed the highest yield at 60 MT/ha for the both successive application and residue. In the 3rd year, successive application of the both fly ash was given the highest yield at 30 MT/ha, respectively indicating the decrease of yield with increasing level of application. In case of residue plot, the highest yield by the application of anthracite fly ash was made at 90 MT/ha for the 1st year application followed by 2 years residue and at 60 MT/ha for the 1st and 2nd year application followed by the 3rd year residue. But in the residue plot of bituminous coal fly ash, yield was highest at 30 MT/ha showing the decrease of yield with increasing level of residue. Enhancement in growth and yield of soybean by application of fly ash was due to the fact that fly ash contained some plant nutrients such as phosphorus, silicon, and boron etc. and reformed soil pH that caused to increase availability of nutrients in soil.

  • The residual effect of silicate fertilizer (crushed slag from the steel industry) on rice yield was evaluated through 4-year field experiments. Applications of the silicate fertilizer at rate of 2500 kg/ha to Gangseo sandy loam soil (Fluvaquentic Eutrochrepts) very low in available silica increased the grain yield by 7 to 12% depending on the mesh size of the fertilizer in the first year. The yield in the fourth year showed no residual effect. Seventeen to eighteen months after the application, available silica content of the soil (1N-sodium acetate extractable) decreased down to 130 ppm which is a, base level for the silicate fertilizer application. Decreasing tendency of available silica concentration of the soil with time differed according to the mesh size of the silicate fertilizer applied. In 36 to 48 months after the application, the extractable silica content of the soil converged to 90 to 100 ppm.

  • The comparative toxicities of selected acaricides against the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, were investigated. The ovicidal and adulticidal activities of selected acaricides were examined under different developmental stages. Fenpyroximate showed high activity throughout all developmental stages of mites. The oviposition inhibition effect of fenpyroximate was more highly effective than that of cyhexatin. At 100 ppm concentration, the effect of fenpyroximate on the residual oviposition inhibition was persistant during 25 days with 85% level, while the effect of cyhexatin gradually decreased, and then decreased to 40% at 25 days after treatment. Fenpyroximate at 100 ppm showed 100% knockdown activity within 3 hour while cyhexatin showed only 91% knockdown activity within 24 hours after treatment. Most of selected acaricides had no systemic activity, but metasystox at 800 ppm had 100% of the systemic activity at 24 hours after treatment. For the influence of temperature on the activity, fenpyroximate showed stable activity and no temperature-dependent in comparison with other selected adaricides.

  • Soil characteristics and crop productivity was compared between 5 soil physical treatment plots: check, reversion, subsoiling, explosive subsoiling and drainage in salt accumulated Gangseo Fine sandy loam soil from 1999 to 2000. Physical treatments of subsoil improved soil physical properties in the following order, reversion > drainage > explosive subsoiling > subsoiling > check. The effectiveness of physical treatment was sustained to the 2nd year after treatment. Soil moisture content of subsoil was highest in the reversion treatments and decreased in the order of drainage, subsoiling, and check. However there was little difference between treatments. The physical treatments increased fluctuation of soil moisture content. However the crop yield in the physical treatment plots were increased. It was considered that the increase of crop yield was caused by improvement of soil physical properties rather than soil water holding in the soil. An average increase rate of crop yield by physical treatments was 10 to 20 percent.

  • The toxicity of benfuracarb and ${\lambda}$-cyhalothrin on oak longicorn beetle, Moechotypa diphysis was investigated in terms of residual effect and control efficacy in the field. Mycelial growth inhibition of Lentinula edodes was also investigated in the laboratory. Benfuracarb and ${\lambda}$-cyhalothrin showed 100% of control values and over 90% residual activities of benfuracarb and ${\lambda}$-cyhalothrin were continued for 15 and 20 days after treatment, respectively. Benfuracarb and ${\lambda}$-cyhalothrin did not affect the mycelial growth of L. edodes Imhyup 1 variety. These results indicate that benfuracarb and ${\lambda}$-cyhalothrin might be used for the control of M. diphysis adults in the field.
