The control effects of four systemic insecticides $Disyston^{(R)}$ (disulfoton) 5G, $Temik^{(R)}$ (aldicarb) 15G, $Ortran^{(R)}$ (acephate) 5G and $Curaterr^{(R)}$ (carbofuran) 3G, on small brown planthopper, Laodetphax striatellus (fallen), were studied by applying them in the furrow of spring barley field. Two different application times; April 19 and 25, and three different dosage rates were used. The results are as follows: 1. No significant difference in the mortalities among the developmental stages were observed with the treated barley on April 25, when various life stages had infested on the cutting of the treated barley in the laboratory. The residual periods were 19 days for Disyston and 31 days for Temik. 2. With field experiments, highly effective control effects were obtained with Disyston and Temik. The residual period was longer with the treatment on April 19 than with those on April 25 for Disyston, while they were reverse for Temik. 3. The effective doses were 2kg/10a for Disyston, while the effectiveness lasted more than 40days with dose of 1kg/10a for Temik. 4. From above results, Disyston and Temik could effectively reduce the population of small brown planthopper in the barley field, which is the effective reproductive sources of the population in the rice field.
This study was conducted to evaluate herbicidal properties of picolinafen in terms of crop safety, weed control spectrum, application window, residual efficacy and resistant weed control. Herbicidal phytotoxicity of picolinafen to wheat and barley was greatest when applied at 0 days after sowing (DAS), but decreased significantly as plant growth advanced. Picolinafen showed greater activity against broadleaved weeds than grass weeds. Picolinafen showed highest activity when it was applied at early post emergence timing (5 to 15 DAS), and showed significantly decreased activity at 20 DAS application. The $LT_{50}$ values (the period from application required for residual control by 50%) was 9.3 and 6.5 days against Digitaria ciliaris and Brasica naus at 60 g ai $ha^{-1}$, respectively. Picolinafen showed similar activities against both triazine resistant and sensitive Amaranthus retroflexus. Collectively, picolinafen appeared to have a good fitness to control resistant broad leaved weeds control by early post emergence application.
The experiments were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of some insecticides in the control of the pine gall midges (Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye) when the low-volume of the insecticides were applied by the mist foliar sprayer. The insecticides, Salithion $(24\%\;Ec)$, Omethoate $(Folimat^{(R)}\;50\%\;Ec)$, Monocrotopos $(Azodrin^{(R)}24\%\;Ec)$, Acephate $(Ortran^{(R)}\;50\%\;Wp)$, Metalkamate $(Bux^{(R)}24\%\;Ec)$. BPMC $(Bassae^{(R)}50\%\;Ec)$ and MIPC $(Mipcin\;50\%\;Wp)$ were tested with 100, 200 and 400 times of water solution on the basis of single application at the six different intervals. Salithion was the most effective for the pressure of the gall formation by the pine gall midges and Omethoate, Monocrotophos and Metalkamate were relativey effective and others no effective. The most reliable concentration of the insecticides was 100 times of water solution, and the feasible timing of insecticide application on the basis of single application would be from May 9 to July 1 with Salithion, June 6 with Metalkamate and June 20 with Omethoate and Monocrotophos. The number of pine needles with the larval injured signs (no larvae in the needles) excluded the gall-formed needles were relatively higher in the treatments of Omethoate, Salithion and Monocrotophos than other insecticides. The treatments of Omethoate, Salithion and Monocrotophos caused the lower larval population in the gall than other insecticides.
Control effects of some insecticides were evaluated against the stone leek leafminer, Liriomyra chinensis Kato (Diptera: Agromyzidae) with the some different treatment methods. Insecticidal activities effects were estimated on the different development stages of the insects on welsh onion. The insecticides that controlled L. chinensis eggs with over 83% efficacy were spinosad, dimethoate, emamectin, and cartap. The insecticides that showed over 87% of larvicidal activity were dimethoate and cartap. Dimethoate showed 93.3% insecticide residual activity for 3 days a(ter treatment as a foliar spray. For control of pupae, the insecticides that showed over 88% of contact insecticidal activity were terbufos GR and cartap GR. Both dimethoate and cartap had high adulticidal activity with over 95% control efficacy.

Nineteen registered insecticides including 8 mixed formulations with buprofezin and 11 single formulations which is not including buprofezin were evaluated by spray application for their toxicity against adult and nymph of citrus mealybug, Planococcus citri. Five mixed formulations with buprofezin such as buprofezin 15EC+acetamiprid 4EC, buprofezin 10SC+clothianidin 3SC, buprofezin 20WP+dinotefuran 15WP, buprofezin 20SC+thiacloprid 5SC, and buprofezin 20SC+thiamethoxam 3.3SC showed high insecticidal activity (>93%) against nymph and adult of P. citri. Insecticidal activities of EPN 45EC, fenitrothion 50EC and methidathion 40EC in organophosphorous group showed 90 to 93% against nymph only. In addition to, insecticidal activities of acetamiprid 8WP, clothianidin 8SC, dinotefuran 20WG and thiamethoxam 10WG in neonicotinoids group showed above 90% against nymph only. In systemic and residual effect, five mixed formulations that was already proved to have high insecticidal activity showed low toxicity with below 60% against $3^{rd}$ instar nymph of P. citri in tomato and rose under greenhouse. Control efficacy of five mixed formulations with buprofezin was above 90%, 80% and 70% at 5 days after treatment (DAT), 10 DAT and 15 DAT, respectively.
Effects of organic matter content in soil on activity. vertical migration. and persistence of two nernaticides. carbofuran and ethoprophos. to root-knot nematode, Mrloitlog!~iei ~lcognita.w ere investigated. As the organic matter content increased. activity of the nernaticides tended to be reduced. Both nematicides exhibited control values of more than 80'k' to M. iix.o,yilit~iln 0-2 cm depth soil layer from the surface. regi~rdless of organic matter content in soil. In 2-4 cm depth soil layer. however. the control value of the neniaticides varied with the organic niatter content in soil. The control value of carbofuran in the soil layer was ranged from I0 to 30'2,. depending on the soil organic niatter content. In contrast. ethoprophos had no control value against M. i/ic.o,ytlitcr in the \oil layer, except that the nematicide had a control value of 30% when the organic matter content was 0.4%. Furthermore. ethoprophos had no effect on controlling M. i/ic.o,gtiitrr in soil layer of below 4cm. whereas control values of carbofuran were approximately from 5 to 20% in all test soils having different organic matter contents. These results indicate that carbofuran has more vertical migration effect than ethoprophos. Persistence of the two neniaticides was also decreased with increasing soil organic matter content. Half life of carbofuran was 2-3 weeks in soil containing 0.4% organic matter, whereas it was found to be I week in soils containning 0.8 ant1 1.6% of organic matter. On the other hand. activity of ethoprophos was reduced to half in 3-3 weeks and in 2-3 weeks in soil containing 0.4 and 0.8%, and 1.6%) of organic matter, respectively. However, no activity of the both nernaticides was found in soil containing 3.2% of organic matter.
This experiment was conducted to find out the simultaneous control effect of granulated insecticides on the several major rice insect pests in Korea. The granulated insecticides used were Terracur P$5\%$ (one of the phosphoric insecticides), Lebaycid $5\%$, and Sang-gamma (gamma-BHC) $6\%$. Those insecticides were broadcasted by hand on the paddy field at the ratio of 3kg. in June and 4kg. in August per 10 a, and the date of insecticidal application was based on the maximum moth occurrence of the rice stem borer in 1969. The rice insect pests tested in this study were rice stem borer (Chilo suppressalis W.), green rice leafhopper (Nephotettix bipunctatus cincticeps U.), smiller brown planthopper (Laodelphax striatellus F.), and white back planthopper (Sogotella furcifera H.). For the study of residual effectiveness of the insecticides, the rice stem borer larvae just hatched from the eggs were installed on the sheath of rice plants collected from the paddy field after insecticidal treatment, and the mortality was made at 48 hours after installation. High mortality was observed in Terracur P and Sang-gamma treatments and low mortality in Lebaycid treatment. The duration of residual effects giving about 50% mortality was about 14 days in Sang-gamma and about 6 days in Terracur P treatments. The study on the effectiveness of the insecticides to the rice stem borer in the paddy field was made by the number of dead blades and white heads of the rice plants injured by the larvae, and the number of survival larvae in the straws after crop harvest. The order of insecticidal effectiveness to the rice stem borer was Terracur P=Sang-gamm>Lebaycid. The study on the effectiveness of the insecticides to the leafhoppers and planthoppers in the paddy field was made by the population density by sweeping (5 times) at the given day intervals after treatments. Terracur P was highly effective for the control of the green rice leafhoppers and Lebaycid was moderately effective, but Sang-gamma seemed not to be effective. The effectiveness of the insecticides tested to the planthoppers was not clear, and it seemed to related with the low insect population density. Study on the determination of proper timing of insecticidal application was not also made clear, and it seemed to be short in the range of day intervals in the insecticidal application. For the study on the control effects of the rice insect pests, rice yield per 100 hills per plot was observed. There was no statistically significant difference among the treatments in rice yields, but the order of yield (Terracur P>Sang-gamma>Lebaycid>Control) was paralleled with the tends of control effects above mentioned. In a view point of simultaneous control of the rice stem borers and green rice leafhoppers by the application of granulated insecticides, Terracur P and Lebaycid were more effective than Sang-gamma which have been used.
During 1976 the effects of insecticide placement in the root zone of the rice plants were evaluated for control of rice insect pests in the screenhouse and in the paddy field at Suweon. The methods of insecticide placement included the use of encapsuled formulation and injection of liquid formulation. In screen house experiments, the root' zone placement of carbofuran was highly effective up to 30 days after treatment against the striped rice borers (Chilo sujppressalis) and up to 17 days after treatment against the small brown planthopper(Laodelphax xtriatellus) and the brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens), while the root-zone placement of omethoate and disyston were ineffective. In field experiments, the injection in every other row by the liquid applicator designed at IRRI was less effective for control of the striped "'rice borers and the small brown planthoppers than the caupsule placement. The single root·zone placement of liquid carbofuran, however, seemed to be equal in 'effectiveness to two broadcast applications of carbofuran and diazinon. In the plots treated at 5 days after transplanting, incidence of the dead hearts by the striped rice borers was much lower than in the plots treated at the 18 days after transplanting.
