  • We investigated turfgrass diseases and inoculum density at nationwide turfgrass cultivation sites in year of 2013. Occurrences of large patch and rust disease appeared in September. Brown patch recorded in September to October at Namhea and Pythium blight disease occurred outbreaks in early July at Namhea site. Some sites in Namhea damaged 3% area of total cultivation field by Sclerotinia homoeocarp. In Daepyeong (Gyeongnam), Fairy ring and large patch were recorded. Severe takeall and fairy ring have been observed in Gochang-si. Multi-site in Cheongju-si, brown patch was observed in pandemic level. Interesting enough, a cool-season turfgrass cultivate sites in Pyeongtaek-si brown patch, leaf blast, summer patch, and Curvularia leaf spot were investigated during the surveys period. Inoculum densities (Rhizoctonia spp.) at turfgrass cultivations sites were increased as cumulatively in all survey sites. The investigation result indicated that the disease occurrence and pathogens are similar as diseases in golf courses.

  • This experiment aimed to estimate the effect of imperfect rice on rice palatability. Rice cultivar, Ilpumbyeo, was cultivated by direct-seeding on flooded paddy surface with 11 kg/10a nitrogen application. Palatability of harvested rice was measured by NIR spectroscope. Brown rice was divided according to their appearance namely, perfect, discolored, green-kerneled, and immature opaque with a composition ratio of $75.7\%,\;11.0\%,\;8.0\%,\;and\;5.3\%$ respectively. When the perfect brown rice was milled, the grain were composed of head, cracked, and white core & belly, at $64.7\%,\;25.3\%\;and\;10.0\%$ respectively. The milled rice of discolored brown rice had similar composition with the perfect rice. The milled green-kerneled vice, on the other hand, had $36\%$ head rice and $64\%$ white core & belly rice. The immature opaque brown rice, when milled, had $25.3\%$ white core & belly and $74.7\%$ damage & opaque rice. With the respect to grain quality, the viscosity of white core at belly rice and damaged & opaque rice was lower than that of head rice. In contrast, their protein content was a little higher than that of head rice. The palatability value of pure imperfect rice was much lower than head rice. The palatability value of damaged & opaque rice was the lowest among the imperfect rices. When mixed with head rice, the damaged & opaque rice impacted on the deterioration of vice palatability. Mixing $1\%$ each of white core at belly rice and damaged h opaque rice decreased the palatability value by $5\%$ as compared with the head rice.

  • This study was carried out to compare the rice quality between domestic brand rice and imported Chinese rice. In the appearance of grain, head rice rates were $96.1\%$ in domestic brand rice (Ilpumbyeo), $94.1\%$ in Jingguan (Chinese brand rice) and $86.5\%$ in Xiaozhandao(Chinese brand rice). In case of Chinese parboiled rice, the head rice rate was $0\%$ because the cracked and broken rice occupied about $95.5\%$. The low protein contents in Ilpumbyeo and Xiaozhandao as 6.5 and $6.7\%$ show relatively high palatability as 81.9 and 71.4. However, high protein contents in Jingguan and Chinese parboiled rice as 7.5, $7.4\%$ show low palatability as 64.3 and 55.6. In viscosity characteristics, peak viscosity, break down and final viscosity were higher in Ilpumbyeo and Xiaozhandao, midium in Jingguan and lowest in Chinese parboiled rice. And the set back value, which was negatively related with amylose content, was lowest in Ilpumbyeo and highest in Chinese parboiled, suggesting slow deterioration in Ilpumbyeo and rapid deterioration in Chinese parboiled rice. Overall physical components of cooked rice measured by Texture Analyser were higher in Ilpumbyeo than those in Chinese parboiled rice.

  • The cultivation area and use of genetically modified (GM) crops have been increased continuously over the world. Seed distribution and transgenes to environmental ecosystem is one of the most important factors in risk assessment and risk management of GM crop. Safe management for the development and commercialization of GM crops is required according to The Act on Transboundary Movements of Living Modified Organisms, etc (LMO Act) in Korea. This study was conducted to setup the environmental monitoring system of GM zoysiagrass (event JG21 and JG21-MS). The monitoring was performed in 4 GMO confined fields, Sungwhan, Ochang, Jeju University and Jeju Namwon. In the result of monitoring, we could not found any gene flow and distribution of GM zoysiagrass in the 3 fields, but one spill of JG21 was found in the Namwon field in 2012. These results suggest that continuous monitoring is necessary to detect the occurrence of GM zoysiagrass for preventing genetic contamination in natural environment.

  • The Rabbit grass(Trifolium Repens, call it 'Clover') is a representative harmful plant of lawn, and it starts growing earlier than lawn, forming a water pipe on top of the lawn and hindering the photosynthesis and growth of the lawn. As a result, in competition between lawn and clover, clover territory spreads, but lawn is damaged and dried up. Damage to the affected lawn area will accelerate during the rainy season as well as during the plant's rear stage, spreading the area where soil is exposed. Therefore, the restoration of damaged lawn is causing psychological stress and a lot of economic burden. The purpose of this study is to distinguish clover which is a representative harmful plant on lawn, to identify the distribution of damaged areas due to the spread of clover, and to review of changes in vegetation before and after the eradication of clover. For this purpose, a time series analysis of three vegetation indices calculated based on images of convergence Drone with RGB(Red Green Blue) and BG-NIR(Near Infra Red)sensors was reviewed to identify the separation between lawn and clover for selective eradication, and the distribution of damaged lawn for recovery plan. In particular, examined timeseries changes in the ecology of clover before and after the weed-whacking by manual and brush cutter. And also, the method of distinguishing lawn from clover was explored during the mid-year period of growth of the two plants. This study shows that the time series analysis of the MGRVI(Modified Green-Red Vegetation Index), NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), and MSAVI(Modified Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index) indices of drone-based RGB and BG-NIR images according to the growth characteristics between lawn and clover can confirm the availability of change trends after lawn damage and clover eradication.

  • This study was carried out to examine the growth performance of 4 species of cool-season grasses and 4 species of zoysiagrasses under salt injury in Seo-san reclaimed area. Grasses were grown on the plots with capillary water interruption layer (WCWIL) and without capillary water interruption layer (WOCWIL) soil systems. Cool-season grass and seeding-type zoysiagrass plots were seeded on 6 Jun, 2006. Vegetative zoysiagrass 'Junggi' was established by sprigging and 'Senock' and 'Millock' were plugged. Electric conductivities of irrigation water (ECw) ranged from 0.28 to $3.3\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Electric conductivities (ECe) of the soil with capillary water interruption layer and without capillary water interruption layer ranged from 0.55 to $9.4\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and from 1.84 to $9.4\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ respectively. Leaf color, turf quality, coverage rates, and growth rates were rated visually for 2 years. Zoysiagrass 'Junggi', creeping bentgrass, zoysiagrass 'Senock' and 'Millock' showed acceptable growth at salty fairway condition, while Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass mixed with perennial ryegrass, and seeded zoysiagrass 'Zenith' showed establishment rates below 70%. These results will be useful when choosing turf grass species and cultivars for the golf courses in reclaimed land area.

  • Yellow tuft symptoms of a dense cluster on zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) occurred extensively at cultivated fields of zoysiagrass sods in Jangsung. The dense cluster of zoysiagrass showed significant morphological changes such as the tufts of shortening of internodes. The disease symptom was spread on a large scale throughout stolon nodes with multiple short leaves and it thrives in broom-like shaped clusters, exhibiting light green or yellow color on their leaves. The dense cluster of zoysiagrass had approximately 5.8 times more leaves on each node of its stolon then healthy zoysiagrass. Also, these zoysiagrass had poorly developed root and stolon caused by the tufts of a dense cluster of shoots. The dense cluster of zoysiagrass were collected for the putative causal agent incubation and upon close observation, it was found that the sporangia took the shape of a lemon, each sporangium was pointed at the end of its axis and was measured to be $60{\sim}96{\times}42{\sim}51{\mu}m$. These findings were analogous to the mycological characteristics of sporangia formed by the pathogen Sclerophthora macrospora. The symptoms of yellow tuft were prevalent in spring and autumn. Therefore, this study aims to present fundamental data in relation to yellow tuft on zoysiagrass in Korea.
