  • This study aims to analyze the impact of names on stress and self-esteem, comparing before and after renaming. A survey was published and conducted on a renaming club website for the period from 1 April 2013 to 31 May and there were 161 participants. The invitation to survey was limited to members who had changed their names at least six months before the survey and the impact was measured by comparing before and after the first renaming. For the analysis of the data, frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA and correlation analysis were performed. As a result, the level of stress caused by one's name was lowered after renaming, and one's self-esteem significantly went up compared to before renaming. Therefore, the stress from one's name is believed to affect one's self-esteem, and the study shows that there is a negative correlation as the lower the stress from one's name becomes, the higher one's self-esteem goes up. Therefore, this study is considered to be able to contribute to reducing stress caused by names, as it has proved that the self-esteem increases and the level of stress is lowered after renaming.

  • Recently, SNS users have begun to complain of fatigue attributed by the dependency on the Social Networking Services, and this trend seem to have them cease or leave the SNS despite its exponential growth. Although researchers devote their effort to identify negative effects of perceived SNS fatigue on the intention to keep using SNS, it still lacks dealing with users' personal characteristics. Thus, this study looked into (1) the differences of perceived SNS fatigue and the differences of intention to leave SNS based on the users' characteristics (demographic variables, personality traits, and SNS usages) and (2) the users' characteristics on the intention to discontinue SNS. The results show that the users with low self-esteem were more likely to feel higher SNS fatigue and to discontinue SNS than those with high self-esteem, and the users in 20s showed higher intention to discontinue SNS than those in 40s. Moreover, the younger the users were, and the lower the levels of self-esteem were, the users reported higher level of fatigue. Additionally, the female users showed that the higher the level of fatigue, the stronger intentions to discontinue SNS. This research sheds light on the fact that the characteristics of users give influences the intention to discontinue SNS, and is expected to suggest practical implications in the ever-expanding SNS market.

Depression, self-respect, and sleep quality before and after the application of leisure activities were analyzed by the corresponding sample t test. The leisure experience, leisure identity, and change in leisure activities were analyzed by SEM(structural wearing model analysis through confirmatory factor analysis. Results : The results of this study are as follows. First, there was a significant difference in depression level before and after leisure activities (p = .000). Second, there was no significant difference in self-respect before and after leisure activities (p = .182). Third, there was a significant difference in the quality of sleep before and after leisure activities (p = .000). Fourth, the effects of leisure experience, leisure identity, and change on leisure activities showed that leisure experience influenced leisure identity and change. However, leisure identity affected depression and sleep quality among the factors of change. Conclusion : A decrease in the quality of sleep that can occur in the elderly can affect the quality of life. • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between children's self-esteem, peer attachment, parenting attitudes, and children's grit, and to specifically identify the influence of children's self-esteem, peer attachment, and parenting attitudes on children's grit. The characteristics of the survey subjects were identified through frequency analysis and descriptive statistics analysis of the 11th year of the Korea Children's Panel (2018) data, and Pearson's moment correlation coefficient was calculated for correlation analysis between major variables. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the influence of children's self-esteem, peer attachment, and parenting attitudes on children's grit. The research results are as follows. First, children's self-esteem, peer attachment, and parenting attitudes were found to be positively correlated. Second, the child's self-esteem was found to have a positive influence on the child's grit, and among the peer attachment sub-variables, peer trust was found to have an influence, and among the sub-factors of parenting attitude, 'mother' affection/involvement, 'father' Democratic relationships were found to have an effect. In other words, it can be seen that children's self-esteem at the personal level, peer trust at the school level, and maternal affection and paternal relationship at the family level are useful variables that strengthen children's grit. Accordingly, in order to improve children's grit level, we must consider promotion measures through intervention and support at a multifaceted level.

  • The present study aims to investigate the effects of bicultural characteristics and social capital on psychological adaptations such as depression and self-esteem. A survey was conducted on 295 foreign-born mothers and their 305 children, ranging from third to sixth grade in elementary school up to seventh to ninth grade in middle school, residing in South Korea's seven major cities, including the city of Seoul. The results of this research are the following: 1) With regards to factors that influence depression among children in a multicultural family, less support from a friend leads to a larger exposure to multicultural programs. Also, the lower the perceived income level of his or her family, greater is the state of the child's depression. 2) Significant factors that influence self-esteem for multicultural children are friends' support, level of mothers' Korean language proficiency, teachers' support, and numbers of multicultural programs. Two implications may be addressed from this study. One is the need to consider bicultural characteristics and social capital to enhance psychological adaptability for children raised in multicultural families. Another is to apply social support characteristics such as friends' and teachers' support to multicultural programs.

As for method of research, this study analyzed the self-esteem of users, their preference for avatar, and the perception toward avatar, in order to understand their psychological and social maturity. The result of study indicated that the increased self-esteem in reality among the adolescents led to the increased preference for avatar relative to the cyber culture on the web, which in turn increased the recognition of others' avatars. Those findings suggest that adolescents tend to assign self-esteem to avatar as great as themselves. Thus, it may be important to help adolescents form their self identity from the perspective psychological maturity, so that a sound and healthy web culture can be formed depending on the formation and level of self-esteem among adolescents.

  • Using flight simulator tasks with 48 air force cadets, this research examined the effects of pilots' flight skill and self-esteem on risk-taking behavior in the context of social comparison with their cohorts. Flight skill and self-esteem were assessed for individual cadets and three conditions of social comparison (upward-, downward-, and no-comparison) were devised. Flight simulator situations inappropriate for further approach or landing were designed to assess pilots' risk-taking behavior. Weather conditions in the simulator were inadequate to make a landing and the recommended strategy was to break off the approach and attempt a go-around. In this experiment, pilots' risk taking was measured in terms of their approach altitudes; the lower approach altitudes indicative of the higher risk-taking. Our results showed interaction effects of flight skill, self-esteem, and social comparison on risk-taking behaviors. For pilots who were either high or low in both self-esteem and flight skill, social comparison had no effect on risk-taking behavior. However, pilots with high self-esteem but low flight skill showed more risk-taking behaviors in social comparison conditions. And, pilots with low self-esteem but high flight skill showed risk-aversive behaviors in the downward-comparison condition.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of social support on self-esteem, depression, and stress of migrant women for marriage and to use them as basic data for developing depression and stress intervention strategies. This study provided correlation and regression analyses of 126 migrant women for marriage. The results showed that the level of social support was significantly and positively correlated to the migrant women's income level (p = .001 <.01) and self-esteem (r = 0.569, p <.001). However, there was a positive correlation among self-esteem, stress, and depression. Reviewing autocorrelations of the three dependent variables and the multi-collinearity between the independent variables, the autocorrelations of self-esteem, stress, and depression were 2.452, 2.418, and 2.278, respectively, indicating the absence of any autocorrelation problem. The regression analysis showed social support (p < 0.001) had a significant and positive relationship with self-esteem. The higher the social support (β = 0.472) was, the higher the self-esteem was. Based on the study results, it is expected that developing various programs of social support for migrant women for marriage is likely to reduce their depression and stress and increase the stability of family and social life.
