  • We study three axis attitude control method including two axis high agile maneuver using four reaction wheels and two control moment gyros. We investigate singularity conditions due to two control moment gyros and propose singularity escape method. Based on this, we propose actuator control algorithm for high agile maneuver. Also, we propose actuator momentum management method which preserves momentum of reaction wheels and control moment gyroscopes before and after satellite attitude control. Through numerical simulation, we show that our method achieves three axis attitude control including two axis high agile maneuver and preserves actuators' momentum.

  • We assume that two control moment gyros are installed for space qualification in a satellite with four reaction wheels, and study the high agile maneuver method. Using high torque control moment gyros, we reduce the satellite's attitude error. After that, we activate reaction wheels to control remaining attitude error. This proposed method can avoid singularity problem of control moment gyros, and do not require gimbals' angle to calculate torque command. Through numerical simulations, we show that our method's agile performance is similar to previous method and reduce the reaction wheels' required momentum.

  • This paper presents the control logic for the momentum wheel and gimbals in the CMG system. First, the design of the control logic for the momentum wheel is described in consideration of the power consumption and stability. Second, the design of the control logic for the gimbals considering the resonance of the vibration absorber and stability is explained. Third, the measurement configuration for the force and torque generated by the CMG is described. Fourth, the results of the frequency and time response test of the momentum wheel and gimbals are shown. Last, the measurements of the force and the torque generated through the CMG are explained.

  • This paper addresses the Feasible Angular Momentum(FAM) chart that can be used as an indicator for maneuverability analysis of spacecraft installed with control moment gyros(CMGs). Recently, as the demands for high agility of spacecraft has been increasing in order to perform the space mission given to spacecraft more effectively, interest in CMGs, which is a high torque generator is increasing. However, since the CMG has a singularity problem that does not generate the control torque in the specific directions, in this paper, we consider the two pairs of parallel control moment gyros(TPCMGs) that follows the roof-type configuration. The Gimbal space was newly defined except for the space where singularity can be generated and the space where torque error is generated due to the hardware limits. The feasible angular momentum space is defined as a FAM chart, and it is very meaningful that it is possible to analyze the spacecraft's rotational maneuverability effectively by deriving the spacecraft's 3-axis parameters in the corresponding gimbal space mathematically.

  • We study X-axis or Y-axis high agile attitude control method, using four reaction wheels and two control moment gyros. Since normal satellites use same actuators, researchers design an attitude controller first, and then allocate torque commands to each actuator. However, our satellite uses both control moment gyros and reaction wheels, whose torque output differences are very large. Therefore, we cannot apply normal attitude controller design procedure. In this paper, we solve this problem by combining actuator torque command and attitude controller. Through numerical simulations, we show that our method enables satellite high agility.

  • The well-used actuators for the attitude control of spacecrafts are thruster, reaction wheel, control moment gyroscope, and magnetic torquer. Among them, the control moment gyroscope(CMG) which generates the torque based on the gyroscopic principle in physics, has an advantage of the high torque output compared to the low power consumption. This paper introduces an outline of CMG hardware technology, its application history in spacecrafts, and their associated hardware characteristics. Moreover, its spin-off cases to the other industrial fields such as ship, robotics, and MEMS including their research trend are provided.

  • The control characteristics after the failure of the control moment gyros, the actuators for satellite attitude control, were analyzed. In particular, the situation where one out of four failed was considered. For the most commonly used pyramids and box-90 structures, the singularities and singular surfaces after failure were analyzed and compared. Dynamic equations for the process of reducing the wheel speed after the failure were derived. The process of stabilizing the angular velocity of a satellite while absorbing the momentum of the faulty module by the three normal modules was analyzed. For singular shapes, the remaining CMGs may be locked or excessively shake. The authors proposed that it can be prevented by rearranging the gimbal angles.

  • Nowadays, CMG(Control Moment Gyros) becomes one of the essential actuators for satellite attitude control. The method to define the key requirements of CMG is suggested to avoid CMG's singularity problem for the limited envelope of angular momentum of 2H. Furthermore, the analysis and simulation are carried out to provide a necessary guideline when three CMGs are used for spacecraft control purpose. An improved configuration of redundant four CMG cluster, slightly different from the conventional configuration, is proposed not only to avoid the CMG singularity problem, but to improve agility about roll or pitch-axis.

  • Singularity indices for steering law design of CMGs have been analyzed. Several qualitative criteria to evaluate the suitability of indices have been suggested. Fast calculation and consistency with the condition number of the input matrix are the most important ones. Based on these criteria, modified indices have been proposed. Properties of infinite value and finite value indices have been compared and an ad hoc method to combine those properties has been presented. Computer simulation results are given to verify the proposed method.
