  • In this paper, a vibratory disturbance to the rotor system generated by gyroscopic precession through helicopter rotor is examined. Also, active vibration reduction method is designed and simulated by designing feedback controller. For this purpose, structural analysis is carried out using EDISON's geometric exact beam program which can analyze the rotor with the cantilever condition. And the aeroelastic analysis is performed by coupling it with the simple aerodynamic model. In order to obtain the real-time structural response, the EDISON program analysis results were modeled by nonlinear equations and the Newton-Raphson method was used for the trim analysis.

  • The squeal propensity of an automotive disc brake system is studied in the theoretical and computational manner. The rotating disc is in contact with two stationary pads and the nonlinear friction is engaged on the contact surface. The friction-coupled equations of motion are derived in the finite element(FE) of the actual brake disc and pad. From the general definition of friction force, the rotation and in-plane mode effects can be included properly in the brake squeal model. The eigenvalue sensitivity analysis and the mode shape visualization at squeal frequencies are also conducted for the detailed investigation. It is found that the squeal propensity is strongly influenced by rotation effect and the in-plane mode can be involved in squeal generation.

  • Dynamics of a rotating cantilever beam near its critical angular speed is investigated in this paper. The external, force is idealized as a periodic function which has the same period as the rotati ng frequency of the beam. The equations of motion are derived and transformed into a dimensionless form. A prescribed spin-up motion is employed for the rotating motion. Numerical study shows that the steady state and the transient responses of the beam are affected by the spin-up time constant and there exists a time constant at which the maximum transient response becomes minimum.

  • The methodology to calculate loads on the bearings of the gas-turbine engine is presented for design of high-speed bearing. Firstly, the loads on the bearings are formulated according to the force and moment equilibrium with gyroscopic moment in three-dimensional space. Afterward, operating loading conditions of the engine are presented by applying the Joint Service Specification Guide, and magnitudes of transient and steady bearing loads are estimated based on the operating conditions. The calculated loading conditions of the bearings will be used for the essential design boundaries for the detail structural design and rig test.

  • This research presents an analytical model to characterize the ball bearing vibration due to the waviness in a rigid rotor supported by multi-row ball bearings considering centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment of ball. The effects of centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment are introduced to the kinematic constraints and force equilibrium equations. The waviness of ball and races is modeled by the superposition of sinusoidal function and it is introduced to position vectors of race curvature center to use the Hertzian contact theory in order to calculate the elastic deflection and nonlinear contact force resulting from the waviness while the rotor has translational and angular motion. They can be determined by solving the nonlinear equations of motion with five degrees of freedom by using the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg algorithm. The accuracy of this research is validated by comparing with the results of the prior researches. It characterizes the vibration frequencies resulting from the various kinds of waviness in rolling elements, the harmonic frequencies resulting from the nonlinear load-deflection characteristics of ball bearing resulting from the waviness interaction.

  • This paper presents an efficient method for determining the forced response of a spinning flexible disk-spindle system supported by fluid dynamic bearings(FDBs) in a computer hard disk drive(HDD). The spinning flexible disk-spindle system is represented by the asymmetric finite element equations of motion originating from the asymmetric dynamic coefficients of the FDBs and the gyroscopic moment of a spinning disk-spindle system. The proposed method utilizes only the right eigenvectors of the eigenvalue problem to transform the large asymmetric finite element equations of motion into a small number of coupled equations, guaranteeing the accuracy of their numerical integration. The results are then back-substituted into the equations of motion to determine the forced response. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by comparing it with the responses from the classical methods of mode superposition with the general eigenvalue problems, and mode superposition with modal approximation. The proposed method was shown to be effective in determining the forced response represented by the asymmetric finite element equations of motion of a spinning flexible disk-spindle system supported by FDBs.

  • CMG(Control Momentum Gyro) is a control device being used for spacecraft attitude control constructing relatively large amount of torque compared to conventional body-fixed reaction wheels. The CMG produces gyroscopic control torque by continuously varying the angular momentum vector direction with respect to the spacecraft body. The VSCMG(Variable Speed Control Momentum Gyro) has favorable advantages with variable speed to lead to better control authority as well as singularity avoidance capability. Attitude dynamics with a VSCMG mounted on a two-axis gimbal system are derived in this study. The dynamic equation may be considered as an extension of the single-axis counterpart. Also, a feedback control law design is addressed in conjunction with the dynamic equations of motion.

  • The yaw control, a major part of the wind turbine, is closely related to the efficiency of electric power production and the mechanical load. The yaw error, which results from the nacelle not being appropriately aligned in the wind direction, not only decreases the power output but also reduces the lifetime of the wind turbine as a result of large fatigue loads. However, the yawing rate cannot be increased indefinitely because of constraints on mechanical loads. This paper investigates the characteristics of an active yaw control system, the basic principle of the system, and mechanical loads around the yaw axis during yawing.
