A finite element model is studied to simulate unsteady free surface flow based on dynamic wave equation and collocation method. The collocation method is used in conjunction with Hermite polynomials, and resulting matrix equations are solved by skyline method. The model is verified by applying to hydraulic jump, nonlinear disturbance propagation and dam-break flow in a horizontal frictionless channel. The computed results are compared with those by Bubnov-Galerkin and Petrov-Galerkin methods. It is also applied to the North Han River to simulate the floodwave propagation. The computed results have good agreements with those of DWOPER model in terms of discharge hydrographs. The suggested model has proven to be one of the promising scheme for simulating the gradually and rapidly varied unsteady flow in open channels.
Fishways are constructed to ensure the fish migration because river-crossing structures such as dams and weirs cut off the stream longitudinal connectivity and influence on aquatic ecosystems. However, the passage efficiency of fishes varies depending on flow characteristics in the fishway and fish species. In this study, three-dimensional numerical simulations are carried out using a RANS model and the volume of fluid method for resolving free surface fluctuations to calculate the turbulent flow in the pool and weir type fishway. The Flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy in the pool of fishway are analyzed according to variation of the upstream water level and the length of pool. The present numerical simulations reasonably well reproduce the stream flow and plunging flow characteristics in the pool. The simulation results show that the stream flow changes to the plunging flow as the length of the pool increases. When the upstream level increases, the stream flow becomes more evident. Key parameters related to the fish migration within the fishway such as the flow velocity and the turbulent kinetic energy are examined to assess the ascending possibility of fishes.
A laterally averaged 2-dimensional hydrodynamic model is newly developed. The coordinate system is first transformed to minimize the effects of irregularity of bottom and surface. The advection terms of the governing equations are then discretized by an upwind scheme. By employing an explicit scheme for longitudinal direction and an implicit scheme for vertical direction, the model is free from restriction of temporal step size caused by a relatively small grid ratio. To demonstrate the applicability of the model, calculated time histories of free surface displacements and distributions of velocity and salinity are compared with the field measurements of the Keum River Estuary before construction of the estuary dam. A reasonable agreement is observed between them.
To investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of a two-dimensional buoyant surface jet, the most important factors of the numerical analysis are the evaluation of the free surface and the turbulence transportation under the stratification. In present study, a numeriacal simulation model used with the semi-implicit method for pressure-linked equations (SIMPLE), the non-hydrostatic approximation and the algebraic stress model (ASM) is applied to investigate the vertical structure of internal flow hydrodynamically. The ASM enables to take account of anisotropy of turbulence, the damping effects of the density interface, and the free surface on the turbulence structure accurately. The ASM tested produces better agreement than the $\kappa-\varepsilon$ model with measurements by Nakatsuji (1984) on the flow development and turbulence structure. Applicability of the ASM to a two-dimensional buoyant surface jet is examined through comparison with experimental data.

The flow in the meandering channel is characterized by the spiral motion of secondary currents that typically cause the erosion along the outer bank. Hydraulic structures, such as spur dike and groyne, are commonly installed on the channel bottom near the outer bank to mitigate the strength of secondary currents. This study is to investigate the effects of submerged vanes installed in a $90^{\circ}$ meandering channel on the development of secondary currents through three-dimensional numerical modeling using the hybrid RANS/LES method for turbulence and the volume of fluid method, based on OpenFOAM open source toolbox, for capturing the free surface at the Froude number of 0.43. We employ the second-order-accurate finite volume methods in the space and time for the numerical modeling and compare numerical results with experimental measurements for evaluating the numerical predictions. Numerical results show that the present simulations well reproduce the experimental measurements, in terms of the time-averaged streamwise velocity and secondary velocity vector fields in the bend with submerged vanes. The computed flow fields reveal that the streamwise velocity near the bed along the outer bank at the end section of bend dramatically decrease by one third of mean velocity after the installation of vanes, which support that submerged vanes mitigate the strength of primary secondary flow and are helpful for the channel stability along the outer bank. The flow between the top of vanes and the free surface accelerates and the maximum velocity of free surface flow near the flow impingement along the outer bank increases about 20% due to the installation of submerged vanes. Numerical solutions show the formations of the horseshoe vortices at the front of vanes and the lee wakes behind the vanes, which are responsible for strong local scour around vanes. Additional study on the shapes and arrangement of vanes is required for mitigate the local scour.

In the present paper, turbulent open-channel flows over longitudinal bedforms are numerically simulated. The Reynolds- averaged Navier-Stokes equations in curvilinear coordinates are solved with the non-linear $k-{\varepsilon}$ model by Speziale( 1987). First, the developed model is applied to rectangular open channel flows for purposes of model validation and parameter sensitivity studies. It is found that the parameters $C_D$ and $C_E$ are important to the intensity of secondary currents and the level of turbulent anisotropy, respectively. It is found that the non-linear $k-{\varepsilon}$ model can hardly reproduce the turbulence anisotropy near the free surface. However, the overall pattern of the secondary currents by the present model is seen to coincide with measured data. Then, numerical simulations of turbulent flows over longitudinal bedforms are performed, and the simulated results are compared with the experimental data in the literature. The simulated secondary currents clearly show upflows and downflows over the ridges and troughs, respectively. The numerical results of secondary currents, streamwise mean velocity, and turbulence structures compare favorably with the measured data. However, it is observed that the secondary currents towards the troughs were significantly weak compared with the measured data.

Both the friction velocity and the friction coefficient have to be estimated to determine flow characteristic in an open channel. In spite of the importances in an open channel, the complete interpretation is highly difficult because of free water surface, the complex of cross section and the various hydraulic parameters. The researches related to the friction factor are based on empirical outcome. Therefore, the equations are difficult to be generally applied. For that reason, the new friction factor estimation equation using the entropy concept was proposed in the present study, and the data measured in rectangular and trapezoid cross sections was used to verify the accuracy of equation. The advantage of the proposed equation dose not use the energy slope term which is difficult to be measured and to be estimated in an open channel. In addition, the proposed method showed that the accurate friction factor f can be estimated on the Basis of theoretical background.
This study investigated the flow characteristics in an annular flume with a free water surface using the Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter(ADV) in the laboratory. The flow was driven by the rotation of the inner cylinder in a way designed not to interfere with flocculation of cohesive sediments. The effect of the inner cylinder for the longitudinal velocities showed highest near the moving boundary and decreased towards the outer wall. At the lower longitudinal velocity, there was a peak in turbulent kinetic energy near the bed, whereas it moved upward to with increasing of the velocity. The longitudinal velocities estimated using the power law were in good agreement with the measured values than the values predicted by the log-law with roughness lengths. The average friction velocities evaluated by Reynolds shear stress were smaller than the values calculated using the log-law and power law when increasing the longitudinal velocity.

This paper investigates the impacts of turbulent anisotropy on the mean flow and turbulence structures in vegetated open-channel flows. The Reynolds stress model, which is an anisotropic turbulence model, is used for the turbulence closure. Plain open-channel flows and vegetated flows with emergent and submerged plants are simulated. Computed profiles of the mean velocity and turbulence structures are compared with measured data available in the literature. Comparisons are also made with the predictions by the k-$\epsilon$ model and by the algebraic stress model. For plain open-channel flows and open-channel flows with emergent vegetation, the mean velocity and Reynolds stress profiles by isotropic and anisotropic turbulence models were hardly distinguished and they agreed well with measured data. This means that the mean flow and Reynolds stress is hardly affected by anisotropy of turbulence. However, anisotropy of turbulence due to the damping effect near the bottom and free surface is successfully simulated only by the Reynolds stress model. In open-channel flows with submerged vegetation, anisotropy of turbulence is strengthenednear the vegetation height. The Reynolds stress model predicts the mean velocity and turbulence intensity better than the algebraic stress model or the k-$\epsilon$ model. However, above the vegetation height, the k-$\epsilon$ model overestimates the mean velocity and underestimates turbulence intensity Sediment transport capacity of vegetated open-channel flows is also investigated by using the computed profiles. It is shown that the isotropic turbulence model underestimates seriously suspended load.
