Purpose : The size and regular array of the collagen fibers in the corneal stroma have very close correlation with transparency. Simulation was carried out to investigate the change of light transmittance according to the array structure and collagen fiber layer thickness. Methods : The collagen fibers in corneal stroma were arranged in regular hexagonal, hexagonal, square and random shapes with OptiFDTD simulation software, and the light transmittance was analyzed. In square array, the light transmittance according to the density change was confirmed by when the number of collagen fibers in the simulation space was the same and the light transmittance was examined when the number and density of collagen fibers were changed. Results : When the number of collagen fibers is the same, the density becomes smaller and the thickness of the fibrous layer becomes thicker in order of arrangement of square, regular hexagonal, random and hexagonal. As a result of measuring the light transmittance by changing the array structure, the light transmittance measured at the detector at the same position was almost similar regardless of the array structure. In the detectors D0, D1, D2 and D3, the maximum transmittance is shown in square, hexagonal and square, regular hexagonal and regular hexagonal array structure, and the minimum transmittance is hexagonal, random, hexagonal and square, and square array structure. However, the difference between the maximum transmittance and the minimum transmittance was almost the same within 1%. When the number of collagen fibers was the same, the light transmittance of the rectangular array structure decreased with increasing fiber layer thickness. And as the thickness increased, the light transmittance decreased more when the number of collagen fibers decreased. Conclusion : Even though the collagen array structure changed, the light transmittance is almost similar regardless of the arrangement structure. However, as the array structure was changed, the thickness of the collagen fiber layer changed, and as the thickness increased, the light transmittance decreased. In other words, the transparency of the corneal stroma is more closely related to the thickness of the fibrous layer than the array of collagen fibers.
The performance of soft handoffs of CDMA mobile communication systems is potentially determined by several factors such as handoff-related system parameters (T_ADD, T_DROP, T_COMP, T_TDROP), mobile stations' mobility, service areas, capacity of base stations. Due to the importance of handoffs in mobile communications, several methods have been proposed and tested through computer simulations to prove the efficiency of proposed methods. Different assumptions on the above mentioned factors often produce different simulation results. Therefore, the credibility of a simulation result is directly determined by the objectivity of the assumptions made by the simulation. This paper proposes a new soft handoff method that controls handoff delay time based on a mobile station's speed, and compares it with the current method of CDMA systems. The simulation results showed that the new method is much more efficient for mobile stations that are free in their moving direction and space than for those restricted in their moving direction and space. In addition, the results showed that even the same handoff method may produces different simulation results depending on whether a service area is modeled as two-dimensional space or three-dimensional space. These results indicate the importance of suitable models of user mobility, especially the movement types and space allowed for mobile stations, which have been neglected in simulation studies of mobile communications.

Among structural systems for complex-shaped tall buildings, diagrid system is widely used because of its structural efficiency and beauty of form. Recently, mega frame is favorably employed as a suitable structural system for skyscrapers because this structural system has sufficient stiffness against the lateral forces by combination of mega members which consist of many columns and girders. Diagrid mega frame system is expected to be promising structural system for future super tall buildings. However, it takes tremendous analysis times and engineer's efforts to predict the structural behavior of tall buildings applied with diagrid mega frame system because the diagrid mega frame structure has significant numbers of elements and nodes. Therefore, efficient analytical method for all buildings applied with diagrid mega frame system has been proposed in this study to reduce the efforts and time required for the analysis and design of diagrid mega frame structure. To this end, an efficient modelling technique using the characteristics of diagrid mega frame structures and an efficient analytical model using minimal DOFs by the matrix condensation method were proposed in this study. Based on the analysis of an example structure, the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method have been verified by the comparison between the results of the proposed method and the conventional method.

A transparent antenna designed on the front glass of an automobile operating in the FM broadcast band(88~108 MHz) is proposed. A transparent antenna designed on the front glass of the automobile to avoid space limitation is typically positioned as a roof-mounted shark-fin antenna. An antenna designed on the front glass can reasonably solve the problems of low reception sensitivity and radiated interference from antennas for other service bands. The front glass has a unique closed-line structure, and this structure causes the surface current to flow to the front glass's surroundings; thus, the first resonance is caused before the broadcast band. Through the use of this closed-line structure, the surface current distribution is controlled, and an antenna for which the first resonance is operating in the frequency-modulated(FM) band can be designed. Moreover, the use of a micro-metal-mesh film that is a transparent electrode, suitable for designing a radio frequency device, enables the antenna to minimize visual perception through its transparency. The measured reflection coefficient($S_{11}$) of the antenna is less than -6 dB, and the average peak gain is -0.9 dB in the FM band. Experiments show that the transparent antenna on the front glass offers both the space and design freedom required to develop future automotive antennas.

In a performance-based design, the structural safety is estimated from pre-defined damage states and corresponding damage indices. Both damage states and damage indices are well defined for above-ground structures, but very limited studies have been performed on underground structures. In this study, we define the damage states and damage indices of a cut-and-cover box tunnel which is one of typical structures used in metro systems, under a seismic excitation from a series of inelastic frame analyses. Three damage states are defined in terms of the number of plastic hinges that develop within the structure. The damage index is defined as the ratio of the elastic moment to the yield moment. Through use of the proposed index, the inelastic behavior and failure mechanism of box tunnels can be simulated and predicted through elastic analysis. In addition, the damage indices are linked to free-field shear strains. Because the free-field shear strain can be easily calculated from a 1D site response analysis, the proposed method can be readily used in practice. Further studies are needed to determine the range of shear strains and associated uncertainties for various types of tunnels and site profiles. However, the inter-linked platform of damage state - damage index - shear wave velocity - shear strain provides a novel approach for estimating the inelastic response of tunnels, and can be widely used in practice for seismic designs.

Submerged floating tunnel (SFT) is a type of tunnel that allows tunnel segments to float underwater by buoyancy, and is being actively studied in recent years. When the submerged floating tunnel is connected to the ground, the tunnel and the bored tunnel inside the ground must be connected. There is risk that the stress will be concentrated at the connection between the two tunnels due to the different constraints and behavior of the two tunnels. Therefore, special design and construction methods should be applied to ensure the stability around the connection. However, previous studies on the stability at the connection site have not been sufficiently carried out, so study on the basic stage of the stability at connection site are necessary. In this study, numerical analysis simulating the connection between submerged floating tunnel and the bored tunnel confirmed that the shear strain concentration occurred in the ground around the connection, and it was analyzed that the structural factors can be handled during construction to have effects on the stability of the ground around the connection. Numerical results show that the risks from disproportionate displacements in the two tunnels can be mitigated through the construction of grouting material and joint design. Although the results from this study are qualitative results, it is expected that it will contribute to the determination of structural factors and risk areas that should be considered in the design of connections between the submerged floating tunnel and bored tunnel in the future studies.

Rock bolts have been installed into rockmass as a main support system. In order to evaluate the rock bolt integrity using non-destructive technique, the transmission method of the guided ultrasonic wave has been successfully performed. For the transmission method, however, the source for the generation o# guided ultrasonic waves should be installed at the end of the steel bar during construction of the rock bolt in the field. The purpose of this study is to suggest a reflection method that the source and the receiver are installed on the head of the steel bar. The reflection method is compared with the transmission method using non-embedded rock bolts and rock bolts embedded in concrete block. In this experiment, the piezo disc element is used as the source and the AE sensor is used as the receiver. The wavelet transform is applied to determine the energy velocity. The experimental studies show that the reflection method produces almost identical value of the transmission method, and the energy velocity increases with the defect ratio. This study suggests that the reflection method of the guided ultrasonic wave may be a suitable method fur the rock bolt integrity evaluation in the field.

Recently, the probability of rock joints being exposed to free faces is getting higher for the scale of rock mass structures gets larger. Also, the frequency of occurring dynamic events such as earthquakes and blasting has been increasing. Thus, the shear behavior of rock joints under different conditions needs to be investigated. In this study, a series of direct shear tests were carried out under various conditions to examine the velocity-dependent shear behavior of saw-cut rock joints. Two types of direct shear test were carried out. The first was to examine the velocity-dependent shear behavior of saw-cut rock joints at seven different shear velocities, each with three different normal stresses. The second was to examine the shear behavior of saw-cut rock joints when three different instantaneous shear velocities changed. As a result, the coefficient of friction was affected by normal stress. The breakpoint velocity, the point when the change of shear velocity starts to affect the frictional behavior, became lower as normal stress increased. Also, as the shear velocity became lower, the degree of stress-drop on stick-slip behavior became larger. As a result of examining the changes of friction coefficient, velocity weakening (decrease of friction coefficient) was observed. The decrement of friction coefficient due to the changes of shear velocity under slow shear velocity was larger than that under fast shear velocity.

As one of the main support systems, rock bolts play a crucial role in the reinforcement of tunnels. Numerical and experimental studies using a transmission method of ultrasonic guided waves are performed to evaluate the integrity of rock bolts encapsulated by grouting paste. Numerical simulations using "DISPERSE" are carried out for the selection of the optimal experimental setup, i.e. non-destructive testing (NDT) system of the rock bolt. Based on results of the numerical simulation, the calculated frequency range for NDT testing is between 20kHz and 70kHz with the first longitudinal L(1) mode. Laboratory transmission tests are performed by attaching the piezo electric sensor at the tip of the rock bolt before embedding. Both of analytical and experimental results show that the amplitude of signals as well as the wave velocity increases with increase in the defect ratio of grouting paste. The defect in grouting paste means that the space around the rock bolt is not fully filled with the grouting paste. Experimental results also show that the increase of the wave velocity is more sensitive to the defect ratio increase than that of the amplitude. This study demonstrates that the transmission technique of ultrasonic guided waves may be a valuable tool in the evaluation of the rock bolt integrity.
This study introduces 'Free Market' that was recently developed in front of Hongik university. 'Free market', as a place for transactions for art products produced by artists or prospective artists, is held regularly every Saturday in front of Hongik university. This study collected data through in-depth interviews with participants and participant observations at the market to analyze the success factors of 'Free Market'. We described development process, unique characteristics of 'Free Market' and new experiential values that the market provide to the participants. This free market was introduced as roadside stand in the middle of 1990s when some artists started selling their works. It passed through the growth stage after it staged the event that had mixed characteristics of 'flee market' and 'art market' at local festivals in 2001. In 2002 Sin-Chon culture forum directedculture-oriented market and the market has been developed as a current 'Free Market'. Recently 'Free Market' is comprised of steps, artists, and customers who voluntarily participated in the market. The market is held regularly every Saturday and provide various types of programs for the participants. Major characteristics of this free market were summarized as 'complex space' and 'role transition', and these characteristics provided the participants new experiential values such as 'freedom', 'emergent experiences', 'social interaction' and 'hero of festivals' through the participant role. We interpret that 'Free Market' has been successfully settled down as a new type of retail store based on these new experiential values. Therefore, this case provides very useful implications that unique experiential values that a store provides to the customers can be major sources of store competitive advantages.
