  • In this study, a numerical analysis to evaluate the reduction of seismic load due to pile group was performed and compared the peak ground acceleration(PGA) measured at free-field and foundation. The special attention was given to the amplification of seismic acceleration on the foundation due to the pile effects. The analysis considering pile effects was carried out for 4, 8 and 12 piles with same condition by PLAXIS 2D Dynamics. Based on the analysis results, it is found that the overall reduction in seismic load due to foundation and reduction rates are similar irrespective of pile numbers. This study gives a possibility for effective design of piled foundation by reducing seismic load about 20~25%.

  • This paper investigates the kinematic and dynamic analysis of a spherical three degree of freedom parallel joint module, which is used in the exercise equipment for balance and leg-strength improvement of aged people. The joint module has three dyads which consist of two links and three revolute joints, and their all joints intersect at the global point located at the module's center. The paper shows the explicit mathematical procedure for deriving the closed form solutions in the inverse and forward position analysis of this parallel joint module. In velocity and acceleration analysis, we derived relations for joint velocities and accelerations of dyads and rotational velocity and acceleration of the top plate. For applying this module to rehabilitation exercise, we determined the dynamic model of the Korean males in their 50s and examined the model's results by dynamic model simulation.

  • In this paper, a method for the estimation of structural displacements using structure's mode shapes and accelerations is suggested to reduce the disadvantages of acceleration time integration method. Acceleration time integration method requires accurate information on initial conditions, and errors caused by noise can be accumulated during time integration. To avoid these problems, the method for the estimation of structural displacements based on mode superposition method is developed and two vibration experiments for cantilever beam are conducted to verify this method. Static displacements and dynamic displacements of beam structure are estimated using measured accelerations from experiments and mode shapes of cantilever beam, and they are compared with measured displacements using laser displacement sensor. From these results, the validity and usefulness of this method are verified.

  • In this study, the response acceleration amplification according to different conditions was analyzed by changing the boundary condition of the soil called LSB (Laminar Shear Box), which is placed on a 1 g shaking table for earthquake simulation experiments. Experiments were carried out with different boundary conditions by fixing both sides of the LSB, and two samples were tested by installing an accelerometer at the same location. In addition, using DEEPSOIL v7 program, a one-dimensional ground response analysis was performed to compare and analyze with the free field condition. As a result, it was confirmed that the acceleration was amplified as it went from the lower layer to the upper layer, and as a result of comparing it with the ground response analysis, it was confirmed that it appeared similar to the analysis under the free field condition. As a result of the SA (Spectrum acceleration) analysis, a result similar to that of the ground response analysis was obtained, and in the case of fixing, it was confirmed that the PSA (Peak Spectral Acceleration) was further amplified.

  • ELT(Emergency Locator Transmitter) is used to send distress signal in the event of an aircraft crash. It is very useful but the ELT may transmit wrong signal caused by misjudging between crash and hard-landing. The reason of this problem is the low accuracy of the mechanical G-switch currently in use. To improve the ELT, we developed an ELT system using the MEMS(Micro Electro-Mechanical Sensor) accelerometer. The ELT system consists of acceleration data acquisition/analysis system, program of crash recognition, and GPS receiving system for the position information of an aircraft crash site. A free-drop table was developed for verification of the ELT system. The free-drop table was designed to replicate the acceleration and the pulse duration of the hard landing and the crash. By using the free-drop table, we showed that the ELT system performed well.

  • This paper deals with finite element analysis for free vibration and forced sinusoidal vibration of Ka- and Ku- band antenna structures using MSC/NASTRAN. The structures are designed to satisfy minimum resonance frequency requirement in order to decouple the dynamic interaction of the satellite antenna with the spacecraft bus structure. The large mass method was utilized to analyze output acceleration according to the forced sinusoidal vibration inputs in X-, Y- and Z- directions. The analysis results can also be used thor verification experimental planning of satellite antenna.

  • In this work, a numerical and experimental study was done to get an optimum cam profile considering dynamic characteristics of a cam-valve system. First of all, a four degree of freedom dynamic model was set up for an OHV type cam-valve acceleration while not modifying original cam shape greatly. Also another optimization which aims to enlarge the valve displacement area while reducing the peak valve acceleration, was tried. The optimized cam profile was tested experimentally and found that the measured valve displacement and pushrod force show only very small error from the analytically predicted model simulation results.

  • An interest in Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) finite element methods has been increased due to more accurate responses in Fluid-Structure Interaction(FSI) problems. The multi-material ALE approach was applied to the prediction of the acceleration response of free-fall lifeboat, and its responses were compared to those of the single-material ALE one. It could be found that even though there was no big difference in the simulation responses of two methods, the single-material and multi-material ALE ones, the latter multi-material ALE method showed a little bit more close response to those of experimental results compared to the former single-material ALE one, especially in the x- and z-direction acceleration responses. Through this study, it could be found that several parameters in the ALE algorithms have to be examined more carefully for a good structural safety assessment of FSI problems.

  • During certification of freefall lifeboats, it is necessary to estimate the injury potential of the impact loads exerted on the occupants during water entry. This paper focused on the numerical simulation to predict the acceleration response during the impact of freefall lifeboats on the water using FSI(Fluid-Structure Interaction) analysis technique of LS-DYNA code. FSI problems could be conveniently simulated by the overlapping capability using Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian(ALE) formulation and Euler-Lagrange coupling algorithm of LS-DYNA code. Through this study, it could be found that simulation results were in relatively good agreement with experimental ones in the acceleration peak values, and that the loading conditions were very sensitive to the acceleration responses by the experimental and simulation results.
