Berchemia racemosa var. magna is only found in Anmyeon Island of South Korea. Genetic diversity and the spatial genetic structure of B. racemosa var. magna in Anmyeon Island were studied by I-SSR marker system. Fifty I-SSR amplicons were produced from 8 selected primers. We used 13 polymorphic markers to analyze the genetic structure. Distribution of 39 individuals in the study plot($90m{\times}70m$) showed aggregate pattern (aggregation index = 0.706). Total 21 genets were observed from 39 individuals through I-SSR genotyping. Proportion of distinguishable genotype (G/N), genotype diversity (D) and genotype evenness (E) were 53.8%, 0.966 and 0.946, respectively. In spite of the small number and the narrow distribution, Shannon's diversity index (I = 0.598) was relatively high as compared with those of the other plant species. For ex situ genetic conservation of B. racemosa var. magna, the sampling strategy based on spatial autocorrelation using Tanimoto distance is efficient at choosing the conserved individuals with a 6 meter interval between individual trees.
In order to develop feed source from shrubby area of mountain for dairy cow, some shrub and grass were harvestied by stage of maturity and analyzed the chemical composition of herbage, and fed to milking cow to know the effect on the body weight and milk production. And the results were summarized as follow. 1. The dry matter content of green herbage was ranged average 25~50% and Smilax china and Cocculus thunbergii were the lowerest as 26.25% and 26.36% respectively and Quercus serrata was the highest as 47.19% of the species. 2. The average protein content of herbage was widely ranged from about 5% to 20%. And Pueraria thunbergiana and Albizzia julibrissin were higher as nearly 20% and Miscanthus sinesis and Arundinella hirta were lower as nearly 5~7%. 3. The average crude fiber content of most species was rarged 20~30%. And Corylus heterophylla and Smilax china were lower as about 20% and Miscanthus sinensis and Arundinella hirta were higher as nearly 37%. 4. The crude protein content of most species was decreased and the fiber content was increased by abvanced the stage of maturity. And also moisture content of green herbage was decreased by seasonal changed. 5. When air dry herbage of 5 kg per head/day was substituted for rice straw, the weight of cows and milk yield and solid not fat content were Slightly increased.
This study was conducted to investigate the vegetation structure of Zone 2 of Mudeungsan National Park Old Trail. A total of 60 survey plots were installed to survey the forest structure, and TWINSPAN and DCA analysis classified them into 5 communities. The community I was classified into Deciduous broad-leaf tree, II into Pinus densiflora-Quercus serrata, III into Quercus serrata, IV into Lindera erythrocarpa, and V into Quercus mongolica. The grouped communities showed some differences in species compositions according to elevation. In the four communities except for community IV, Styrax japonicus and Sasa borealis formed a dominant population in understory layers and in shrub layers, respectively, and the current community forms are expected to be maintained. Monitoring of vegetation succession of lower vegetation after temporary flowering and withering in the ridges developed in the shrub layers in communities II through IV is required. In the long-term aspect, the competition between the pine tree and oak tree communities requires observation of a decrease in the power of the pine tree community. Mudeungsan National Park's Old Trail ecologically valuable as it has a vegetation structure that is distinctively classified according to altitude and is a habitat of Lindera sericea, the flagship species of Mudeungsan National Park. It means that the excellent forest ecosystem of Old Trail must be conserved through sustainable utilization.
Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii Henry is a short and creeping evergreen shrub which reaches about 50㎝ in height and occurs in the northeast Asia and in high mountains over the South Korea. Its distribution is restricted, and the number of individuals are gradually decreasing. This study was conducted to estimate spatial pattern, genetic diversity and spatial genetic structure of J. chinensis var. sargentii. A total of 131 clumps were studied in the study area (40m × 60m). The spatial pattern of this population was random (Aggregation index R=1.031). In spite of the small number and the limited distribution, the level of genetic diversity (Shannon's index 1=0.463) was relatively high as compared with those of other plant species with similar ecological characteristics. ISSR genotypes of all individuals were investigated to find the genetic relationship of clumps and genets. Fifteen clumps were composed to be clones, and a total of 116 unique genotypes were composed by separate genets. Spatial autocorrelation analysis using Tanimoto distance showed that the genetic patch was established within 8m. The effect of clonal reproduction on genetic structure was almost nothing.
Tree leaves have been used as the passive sampler to measure lipophilic PAHs in the atmosphere. This is a convenient and economical method in case of sampling at many regions including the remote places that are not supplied with electric power. But poor results can be obtained if samples are collected carelessly or PAHs concentrations are calculated on the basis of wrong natures of tree leaves. This study was performed to avoid the errors of interpretation that can be induced by these problems when tree leaves are used as a passive sampler of PAHs. Conclusions have been reached as follows: 1) The correlativity was low among the water content, the lipid content, the dry weight and the area of four kinds of tree leaves. According to this, PAHs concentrations calculated per wet weight, dry weight, lipid content and area of tree leaves differed. Therefore, same unit shoud be used to describe concentrations of the pollutants when PAHs concentrations deposited on leaves from atmosphere in the different regions are compared. It is better to decribe the unit as PAHs concentrations per dry weight of leaves for comparison with other data because almost researcher make use of this unit, and the range of fluctuation of the dry weights in several natures of tree leaves was relatively little during growing seasons. 2) Although four kinds of trees(Pinus Koraiensis, Ginkgo biloba, Evodia daniellii, Kalopanax pictus) had been grown at the same place, PAHs concentrtions deposited on leaves differed respectively. Therefore PAHs concentrations deposited on different kinds of tree leaves should not be compared. It is better to make use of pine needles as the sample because pine trees grow almost over the world, and it is able to collect their samples in winter.
The study has been carried out to invetigate the possibility of oak mushroom (shiitake) cultivation on Ban Oak (Quercus incana) growing naturally in Simlaregion, India. The survival and growth of oak mushroom mycelium and fruit body formation on Q. incana as well as the composition of the log were compared with that of Bristle-tooth oak (Q. serrata) which are being used for mushroom cultivation in Korea. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The content of alcohol-benzen extract, NaOH extract, NaOH extract and ash were higher in Q. incana than in Q. Serrata. While cellulose and pentosan were less in the formers. 2. The mycelial growth of oak mushroom were more rapid on sawdust medium of Q. Serrata than on Q. incana. However the mycelial growth on the later were more compact. 3. The mycelial growth of oak mushroom were more rapid on the logs of Q. serrata than Q. incana. The mycelium survived well on both two species, and no difference in the survival rate of mycelium were observed. 4. The first fruit bodies on logs of Q. Serrata and Q. incana were appeared 16 months inoculation of spawn. 5. In view of the above results. it seems that the cultivation of oak mushroom (shiitake) on Ban oak (Q. incana), growing in India, is possible.
${\alpha}-Amylase$ inhibitor is used to control blood glucose level by inhibiting starch digestion in the small intestine and delaying the absorption of glucose. In this study, we investigated the effect of the ethanol extracts from more than 1400 species of plants against ${\alpha}-amylase$ with the aim of developing a new ${\alpha}-amylase$ inhibitor. In the results, Cornus walteri extracts showed the highest inhibition activity. The inhibitory effect of Cornus walteri extract on the carbohydrate hydrolysis enzymes has different sensitivities against ${\alpha}-amylase$ from salivary and pancreatin and against ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ from yeast and porcine small intestine. In the study of inhibition kinetics of ${\alpha}-amylase$ and ${\alpha}-glucosidase$, Cornus walteri extract showed competitive inhibition against salivary and pancreatin while showing the combination of uncompetitive and noncompetitive inhibition against ${\alpha}-glucosidase$. The Cornus walteri extract was stable at acidic and thermal conditions. As for the blood glucose and body weight levels of Cornus walteri extract, we confirmed anti-hyperglycemic and anti-obesity effects. Also, in the investigation of the mRNA lever, Cornus walteri extract upregulated the level of GLUT4 mRNA in the quadriceps muscle.

The essential oil from Chamaecyparis obtusa was investigated for biological activities in anti-oxidative, anti-inflammation and antibacterial method, respectively. The Growth inhibitory effect of C. obtusa oil on the bacteria was evaluated with MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration), $IC_{50}\;(50\%$ inhibitory concentration), and paper disc method. Two kinds of gram positive strains and two kinds of gram negative strains were used in this study. Gram positive strains were B. subtilis and S. aureus. and Gram negative strains were E. coli and P. aeruginosa. Gram positive strains showed much more intensive effect than gram negative strains. Anti-oxidative effect was investigated with DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhidrazyl) in methanol based and $IC_{50}\;was\;0.78\%.$ Our results suggest that the essential oil from Chamaecyparis obtusa has effects on anti-bacterial, anti- oxidative and anti-inflammation in in vitro and in uiuo. Then this material could be expect synergic effect with other candidated extracts and oils.
This study conducted selected two sites in Geumnamhonam and four sites in Honam-Jeongmaek for vegetation survey with consideration to the location environment and anthropogenic impacts to investigate the vegetation structures of the Geumnamhonam-Jeongmaek·Honam-Jeongmaek ridge areas. Using TWINSPAN (two-way indicator species analysis), each of the two ridge areas were categorized into seven plant communities. The differential species in the TWINSPAN technique indirectly represent the environmental factors of plant communities, and the community types of the two ridge areas were divided based on environmental factors such as altitudes above sea level, soil moisture, and disturbance. These results were in harmony with the environmental factors of the DCA (detrended correspondence analysis) axis 1. In the low-lying areas of both ridge areas, afforestation tree species such as Pinus rigida and P. thunbergii were in competition with native tree species. As such, in the low-lying areas, artificial vegetation disturbance was severe due to afforestation and development projects. In relatively highland areas, such as upper slopes, and top areas, in the ridge, the vegetation type with the dominance of Quercus mongolica, Q. variabilis, and P. densiflora was preserved well. As for differences between the two ridge areas, communities dominated by Q. mongolica were distributed widely in Geumnamhonam-Jeongmaek because of the altitudes above sea level, and the latitude of this ridge area are higher than those of Honam-Jeongmaek. On the other hand, communities dominated by P. densiflora were distributed along with communities dominated by Q. mongolica, and communities dominated by Q. variabilis appeared in Honam-Jeongmaek because it is adjacent to the south coast. In quantitative vegetation analysis such as TWINSPAN and DCA, changes in species composition and the extracting environmental factors that cause the changes are important. To that end, the removal of accidental emergent species, the establishment of an investigation plan that assumes environmental factors, and the selection of the optimal analytical method suitable for the characteristics of the survey data are necessary.
This study explored agroforestry strategies to achieve ecological and economic effects simultaneously for Elsentasarhai region in Mongolia under desertification, based on attitude survey with a questionnaire, field survey on planting sites, and literature review. The agrosilvopastoral approach was suggested as a type of agroforestry practices which combined tree planting for combatting desertification and wind damage to crops, agricultural crop production for income improvement, and livestock raising, a major industry in the study region. Populus sibirica and Ulmus pumila native to desert regions were selected for tree planting, and Hippophae rhamnoides, potato, and fodder appropriate for the short growing season were chosen for income crop production, reflecting residents' attitudes and growth environments. As a strategy of land allocation to satisfy multiple effects of the agrosilvopastoral approach, the alley cropping technique was recommended which arranged alternately strips of trees as windbreaks and income crops in multiple rows. The study also explored desirable planting techniques to improve conditions of income crop production and tree growth against drought and strong winds in the alley cropping. Study results will be useful as fundamental information to implement sustainable agroforestry in Mongolia and other semi-arid regions where knowledge concerned is lacking.
