  • Three damselfishes, Dascyllus melanurus, Dascyllus trimaculatus and Poamcentrus nagasakiensis were collected in the coastal waters of Cheju Island, Korea, during the period from July 1994 to May 1997. These taxa were a new records to th Korean fish fauna. This study re-describe about family Pomacentridae (6 genera, 13 species) including 3 new recorded species and suggest the taxonomic key of family pomacentridae from Korea.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the sanitary quality of Jarhi-dom, Chromis notatus, and its products, during the period from May to October, 1975. And bacterial density of the sea water in the estuary of Sogwipo was compared. The number of general bacteria and coliform group in the sea water appeared lower than that of other areas. Both Jarhimuchim-hoe and Jarhimul-hoe showed higher bacterial densities than the fresh fish when caught and sold in the market although Jarhimuchim-hoe showed slightly higher density than Jarhimul-hoe. Vibrio parahaemolyticus was detected in some samples of sea water and Jarhi-dom, but it was not regarded for food poisoning. Bacterial densities in total plate counts, coliform group and Vibrio parahaemolyticus was highest in August and September.

  • External morphology of three species of damselfishes, Chromis notata, C. analis and C. fumea were studied based on the samples collected from the Korean waters from 1993 to 1994. In morphology of the black spot at base of pectoral fins, C. notata has a large triangluar spot at Cheju population and a small circular spot at Sin - am. In the length of pelvic fin, C. notata of Korea can be classified into 3 groups. First group has a pelvic fin that extends to the origin of anal fin, second extends to the anus, third not extend to the anus. C. analis has higher body depth than C. notata and C. fumea in % of standard length. C. fumea has a minute serrate preopercle and no black spot at base of pectoral fins. In distribution, C. notata has a more widly distriubtion area than C. analis and C. fumea. Therefore, C. notata has more tolerance of cold waters than C. analis and C. fumea.

  • The fish fauna was investigated around Dokdo in the East Sea from Oct. 15 to Oct. 16, 1997 and May 12 to 15, 1999 Fishes found in this area were 63 species in 28 families : 58 species of 25 families in autumn (Oct., 1997), and 30 species of 15 families in spring (May, 1999). Apogon cookii and Tripterigion bapturum were unrecorded species in Korea. The 11 species of subtropical fishes including Pomacentridae (4 species) and Apogonidae (3 species) occupied about 20% of the fish fauna in autumn, whereas these subtropical fishes did not occur in spring.

  • The author has collected as many as 35 species belonging to 25 genera in 18 families by trap net in the fishing ground of Chromis notatus along Seogwipo coast in Jeju-do. Among 35 species included are 6 species of Labridae, 4 species of Scorpaenidae, 3 species of Pomacentridae, and 3 species of Monacanthidae. In regard to the amount of catch, more than $90\%$ are Chromis natatus which are mainly caught within the depth of $15\~25m$, and the rest are largely Apogon semilineatus and those belonging to Labridae. ; Some ornamental fishes, subtropical fishes and some rare species are also collected.

  • Comparative osteology of Chromis notata, C. analis and C. fumea was studied based on the samples collected from the Korean waters. The three species are distinguished by the shape of cranium, visceral skeleton, vertebra and caudal skeleton. Chromis notata has a glossohyal which is slightly curved in shape while two other species are deeply curved. C. analis has three spiniform procurrent caudal rays while others have two. C. fumes could be distinguished easily by the shape of preopercle which is serrate in posterior margin. This investigator reveals following bones as new taxonomic criteria for the genus Chromis in Korea. In cranium, height of supraoccipital, height of process of parasphenoid and anterior margin of basisphenoid, in visceral skeleton, presence of fine papilla-like process at the surface of preopercular sensory canal, in orbital bone, width of preorbital, in hyoid arch, shape of glossohyal, union state between lower hypohyal and ceratohyal and union state between ceratohyal and epihyal, in shoulder girdle bone, dorsal margin of posttemporal, width of upper postclavicle, posterior end of lower postclavicle and posterior margin of first actinost bone, in vertebrae, beginning point of parapophysis, in caudal skeleton, upper shape of second neural spine of pleural centrum.

  • Three specimens of Abudefduf septemfasciatus were collected firstly from tidal pools on the southern and northern coasts of Jeju Island, Korea in August 2015. This species is characterized by black blotches on the upper origin of the pectoral fin, upper caudal peduncle and a dorsal fin between the second and fourth spines, predorsal scales beyond to above the middle of the eye, 12~13 soft dorsal and anal fin rays, and 20 lateral-line scales. This species is distinguishable from Abudefduf sordidus by soft dorsal and anal fin rays, location of caudal peduncle blotch, and location of the dorsal fin blotch. The newly proposed Korean name is "Il-gop-jul-ja-dom".

  • During the course of taxonomic study on the genus Chromis from the southern coastal waters off Cheju Island during April-August 1993, eight specimens have been classified as Chromis analis(Cuvier) for the first time in Korea, and thus described here as new to the Korean fish fauna. Damselfish, Chromis analis was originally described by Cuvier and Valenciennes(1830) from Ambonia, Indonesia. Chromis notatus is the only species to date in the genus Chromis distributed around Korean waters, according to Chyung(1977). Chromis analis is distinguished from Chromis notatus by three spiniform procurrent caudal rays, a deeper body and a golden or brown yellowish body and fin color. Norang-ja-ri-dom is proposed as the Korean name for Chromis analis.

  • The Damselfish, Chromis fumea, was originally described by Tanaka(1917) from Nagasaki, Japan. In the Korean waters, 27 specimens of Chromis fumea(Tanaka) were collected from Cheju-do, on April-August, 1993, and described herewith as new to the Korean fish fauna. Chromis fumea differs from Chromis notatus in having serrate preopercle, no distinctive black spot in pectoral base and caudal fin with a broad blackish band in each lobe. Yeonrnoo-ja-ri-dom is proposed as Korean name of Chromis fumea.
